When I first came online the only accounts I had access to were my email accounts. Over time though I started joining more and more sites because there is so much stuff you need when building a business online.
Today you could be a part of hundreds of services and programs. You’ve probably even signed up with some you no longer use and have totally forgotten about.
Now I know when I first started I was using the same username and password for everything.
Why?
Because it was so easy to remember… You know exactly what I mean because you’ve probably done it too.
Is that the smartest thing to do?
Well hell no…
In the beginning though we were only a part of a few sites. Now we have our blogs, our hosting service, autoresponder service, domain service, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube, third party apps, affiliate sites, and the list goes on and on and on.
Strong Passwords
Everywhere you turn people are recommending that you do not use an easy username to sign into accounts and for goodness sakes do not use your birthday, telephone number or your pet’s name as your password.
Okay guys, I know they are easier to remember.
They are also going to be a hackers dream if they get their hands on any of your information.
Let’s face it, if you use the same ones on all your sites all they have to do is just try them out and bam, they’re in. Yikes!
I’m sure that most of you are aware that there is a site that can help you generate strong passwords. That’s a really good thing right so now all you need to do is just keep up with them all.
I started out using an excel spreadsheet but now that darn file is huge. I still have it though.
Is it what I rely on today?
Nope…
Easy Access To Passwords
I use a service to access all my passwords. Oh and guess what! It’s free…
Now there are a lot of services online today that will help you fill in forms with all your information and this service does that to an extent but what I love about it is that I can have as many strong passwords as I want and never have to remember any of them.
The site I’m talking about is called LastPass.
All you do is sign up with their service and then download their program. They have video tutorials should you need any assistance and you can use this service on Windows, Mac, Linux or your mobile device.
For easy access you can upload an extension or addon to your browser. Now once you sign up with a new site or you’re logging into one that you have been using for awhile, a little drop down menu will show up under your browser and ask you if you want to save that site.
You can set it so that it will automatically fill in your information or you have to click on the icon to fill in the information. You can access your passwords from any computer just by logging into this service.
Is It Safe
I know what you’re thinking. Is this site safe and if someone hacks into my computer then they can steal all my information.
Guys, if someone hacks into your computer then you probably have files on it that have this information anyway.
Now I’m no computer genius but most hackers, and I said most, will do their best to mess with your blog, website or hosting service. Most of them aren’t really interested in your computer. Once again I did say most.
I’ve been using this service for over two years now and I’ve never ever had any issue whatsoever. I also am the only one who uses my computer so if you share it with someone then just logout of LastPass when you log off and they will not have any access to any of your sites.
Nothing online is 100% safe so all you can do is your best to protect it from outside threats. Knock on wood that never happens to any of you.
So if you’re looking for a program that will make your life easier then LastPass is the one.
I didn’t shoot a video showing you how to use this service because then I’d have to kill you! LOL… Heck, you’d see all my secrets and that would not be a good thing. Plus, I’ve been using this service like I said for over two years so I’d have to find another computer to set this up on.
What Are You Using
So tell me, what service or system are you using to remember all your log-in information?
Are you making it hard for people to access your sites? Do you have strong usernames and passwords in place?
Are you using a strong password generator like the one I mentioned above?
I would love to hear your answers to these questions so be sure to leave that in the comments below as well as share this post with your friends. Maybe they’re looking for a cool program to use as they join more and more sites.
Now, let’s start making your log-in information more difficult from outside threats because now you have an easy place to access them all.

Hi Adrienne
Interesting sounding service….
Rather than my PC being hacked for passwords, or more likely some malware on a website that installs a keylogger, which forwards this to the hacker server, is how secure is the software or service server.
Far easier to hack a server containing thousands of people’s passwords….A much bigger prize!
I am sure these have it locked down, too big a target!
The system I often use is to have a base password -. Good strong password -and add modifiers
So BigStrong-awjb
Could be for my Awber Jon Barry account
And
BigStrong-awgnj could be for the Gill and Jon Awber account.
So varied enough but similar enough to.Remember!

Hi Jon,
As Carolyn mentioned today Jon, this past week The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Washington Post and Twitter were hacked. I’m pretty sure they had sites they were using they considered safe too. How safe is anything these days?
I’m glad your password generating technique works well for you. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that nothing ever happens to any of your sites.
Thank you for your comment Jon and enjoy your week.

Adrienne this is a serious issue you know!
I used to have one password across accounts but that was a big risk. Like you point out, if the bad guys got access to one account, probably other accounts are exposed. Right now I have more than 5 but less than 10 strong passwords. I have carefully worked them out. I know with time, I might need more.
One other thing that makes things easier is the ability to sign up to a system using already existing accounts like Facebook, Twitter, etc. It saves a whole lot of work feeling forms and keeping track of new login data. However, the danger here is once your Facebook or Twitter account is down, you may get into trouble.
I’ll check the service you have recommended. It may be a perfect solution for now
Thanks for the value. Hope you have a wonderful week ahead

Hi Enstine,
I agree and I know when you aren’t familiar with some of the things that can happen online we don’t know any better. I admit being one of those but the more sites I signed up with the more I started to understand that we need to make our log-in information more difficult to access.
I agree that although it’s easy to log-in using these social media sites, I prefer signing up with them and creating my own. I never like to think negatively but you just never know when something might be compromised on any of these other sites.
Give it a go Enstine, I love it and I have nothing but strong passwords so it just makes it that much easier for me.
I appreciate your comment and enjoy your week.

Adrienne, I try to change mine often to avoid being hacked. But to remember them is something else. I used to have a file for them but I’ve given up on that. Many times I have to get an email to get a new Password as I forget.
If you have been using it for 2 years it must be awesome.
This LastPass sounds WONDERFUL! Thanks for sharing. Do you have the Free version or the paid? I was thrilled to see a Free version of it too. There are only so many things I can pay for now
It was still cold here this weekend and I spent too much time online. I can’t wait for spring to arrive.

I only have the free version and it does everything I want. I looked at the paid but to be honest, I can’t see where it does more for me then the free version. I love this service.
The weather was beautiful here and I hardly spent any time online. Shame on me, I should have though. I hope you didn’t wear yourself out girl.

Very informative post, Adrienne!
I’ve been struggling from remembering the passwords for all the services that I use. Like you, I too initially used the same password for everything, until one day one of my accounts got hacked. Then I changed the passwords; keeping simple ones for websites and services that did not require much security, and difficult ones for important website and emails. But now with most of the website requiring strong passwords, and that different websites have different password rules, it is really getting on my nerves. I never made any Excel spreadsheet though; maybe I was not that smart enough.
I do use the ‘save password’ prompt by my browser at times, but not for my important websites and services. I can’t trust the browser for I know the password can be retrieved from it by any expert, if they managed to sneak into my computer. It is really scary to think of it.
Thanks for informing about the password management website. I think I’ll give it a try as far as I’m assured that it will be secure and that I’m putting my money into safe hands (not lot of money, though
). If you’ve been using their services for the last two years; I’ll take your word for it.
As for your end-question – I don’t use any service or system to remember the passwords and log-in information – as I said before; I was too scared to trust any, until now.
But yes, I do make the passwords strong using all the weird keys on my keyboard
Thanks for helping me – honestly, I think I’ll be much relieved of the extra baggage of my head!

Thanks Harleena,
I had to keep a record of my passwords because I’ve never had a good memory. I have to write everything down in order to remember things. Making all these different types of passwords because way too much to remember.
I never use that feature because I do use this service. I know though that the only way for anyone to learn of all of this is if they hack into your computer, not any of the sites. Not that hasn’t happened to people because it’s still something that happens. I’ve just never had any issues in this area thank goodness.
I’ve been using their free service for the past two years and all I can say is I’ve never had an issues with their service. I can only speak for myself and of course I can’t speak for any hackers.
Give this one a go and you’ll see that it’s extremely helpful Harleena.
Thank you for your comment and you enjoy your week.

Hi Adrienne, how are you?
I visited LastPass and found that the features are amazing. I actually didn’t know about such online services. Thanks for writing about it.
As for my passwords, in the beginning I was using normal words along with one or two digits. But few months ago my Gmail account was accessed by somebody in US. Thanks to Google who mailed me immediately about the same. Since then I’ve been trying to make better ways to create strong passwords. Now I’ve my own formulas to create passwords. May be someday I’ll write about them.

Sorry your Gmail account was hacked. I’ve only had my personal email account hacked a few times but none of my business ones. I don’t necessarily have a formula for my passwords but I’ve added different numbers, characters, caps and symbols like they suggest. They just get so hard to remember which is why I love this service.
Thanks for sharing that and have a great week.

Anyway I use Lastpass and it is a life saver. As I was joining hundreds of different things, I used to write down my user name and password on index cards and put them in a box. ….That box is FULL!
I still do because ya just never know! But I use Lastpass and it is so easy. All I have to do is press “autofill” and I’m on my way! I looked into it and it really is safe.
I don’t know what I would do without it! Thanks Adrienne for passing this cool tip along.

Hi Adrienne,
Well, like you I used to have just a few passwords and than it became of notebook full of passwords. I started with easy to remember passwords until I realized that while it was easy it was also dangerous. So I came up with different passwords.
It’s only recently that I also decided to get a password protection service. Mine is not free however, and when the year that I paid for is over I’d better check yours, Adrienne. You know me, I didn’t even know they had such thing for free. I tend to never know those things LOL!
Thank you very much for this information, Adrienne, and have a great week!

Hi Sylviane,
I hear ya Sylviane and understand what you mean. Although I never used last names or birth dates, I did make them easy for me to remember. I just know that as security becomes more of an issues throughout the years I had to finally break down and start making them much stronger.
I’m sure your paid service is great. Although the only thing I can think of with a paid service would be that they would guarantee that you’d have no issues but no site can fully guarantee that. No site is 100% exempt from hackers. That just makes them that more attractive I’d think.
You’re be shocked at some of the things you can find online for free when compared to the paid version, they are darn near the same.
Thanks Sylviane for sharing this and you enjoy your week.

HI Adrienne,
Great information shared!
For me I always have strong passwords which are created by the combination of alphabets, numbers, special characters and also the Case sensitive options. At times I try to segregate the passwords based on the importance of the websites. I don’t use any software to generate that but after reading your post it appears that the tool you suggested can be handy and I don’t need to use the left side of the brain to generate those passwords.
Thanks for sharing this great info and thanks for all your support.

Hi Sapna,
Thank you, I appreciate that.
When you generate random passwords through a service like this they aren’t related in any way. They will be much more difficult to break and then this way with LastPass you don’t have to remember them all. I’m sure it doesn’t hurt to keep them in a safe place but at least this way it’s much easier to access.
I appreciate your comment, thank you so much.

Hi Adrienne

I hope you had a good weekend, we are having such warm, sunny weather here at the moment, we went for long walks both days just to enjoy the sun while it lasts as Feb can be a wet month here.
Now back to your post (sorry I got distracted lol) I used to have the same password for everything until I realized (think I knew all along this was wrong) that I was vulnerable, and the hackers could get in easily, so I began changing them and using strong ones and a different one for each site. I was using a folder for them all but I am getting all lost with it all and have given up on it.
Your post has come at an important time as I am signing up for many more sites and my passwords are getting beyond my control….this site you have recommended sounds just what I need so I will be heading over there to check it out after I leave here, thanks for that
Have a great week

Hi Adrienne, Passwords are very difficult. There really is no 100% secure solution. Last summer a tech writer got hacked because someone convinced Amazon and Apple to grant access to his accounts over the phone. Password changed and suddenly the writer’s computer and iPhone were wiped remotely. He had very complex passwords, but it didn’t matter, he still go hacked.
My prediction is that the tech world will have to come up with a better solution than passwords. They can be hacked, broken, stolen, retrieved and cracked. Google tried facial recognition with Android phones, but that was faulty because a photo of the phone owner would fool the phone into unlocking.
Perhaps retina recognition or fingerprint identification could work.
I don’t have a perfect solution. Password sites aren’t foolproof and can be targets of hackers. This past week, The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Washington Post and Twitter were hacked. I imagine that password sites are big targets as well.
I have an unusual mind that I remember things such as passwords and license plate numbers. I have unique passwords for each site but have a way to remember them. I don’t recommend this system for everyone.
My kids bought me a little notebook to record my passwords, but I was suspicious that they wanted to peek and see what my passwords were! I filled in prompts but not the actual passwords.
I log in to my sites from lots of different computers and devices so keeping track of passwords in my head has worked well. When I’m in my advanced years, my system may not work as well for me though!
I’m glad you found a system that works for you, Adrienne. I hope that LastPass continues to work well for you, until the tech world makes passwords obsolete!

Hey Carolyn,
See, there is never a 100% chance that you won’t get hacked. I read something about them the other day and they use a program. It’s the challenge to a lot of them which is why it’s helpful to use as strong a password as possible although like you mentioned, it’s still never a 100% guarantee.
I know and I’ll be curious to see what they eventually come up with in the future.
That sounds way too high tech for me but probably the only way you can be more secure. Only problem with that is if you give someone else access to your site to do some work on it then they wouldn’t be able to get in.
Wow, that’s horrible… I hadn’t heard that but then again, I don’t keep up with the news.
I’m very impressed and have no clue how you do that. I have another friend that has a fabulous memory and remember very difficult passwords would not be a problem for her either. You are not in the norm though Carolyn, I know you know that.
Your kids are sneaky Carolyn but their Mom is even sneakier! lol…

Hi Adrienne, Yes, I wrote an article about that incident: http://www.wonderoftech.com/a-true-and-terrifying-tale-of-a-digital-disaster-and-how-to-avoid-it-happening-to-you/ A True and Terrifying Tale of Digital Disaster (and How to Avoid It Happening to You) because the story was so very scary (hope it’s okay to leave a link here). The message is that nothing is 100% secure so backups are very important.
In the UK if you travel a lot you can register for retina scanning to avoid long lines at immigration. That’s very handy but I don’t see all computers and mobile devices having retina scanning capabilities any time soon. I had a laptop once with a fingerprint scanner though!

Hi Adrienne,
Okay so, I am guilty as sin on this one. I’m still doing things the difficult way. Like you, I have created a couple of documents, one as a word doc and the other in a spreadsheet form.
Both are password protected so I have yet another password to remember before I can even get to all my passwords. LOL!
At least I don’t use the same password for everything and I have tried to make most of them difficult to hack. But, I’m always having to refer to my document and look them up. Total waste of time…

Hi Adrienne
Wow! More valuable information for us.
Yeah, I am guilty of easier passwords and know I should not. Was forced to pick a few difficult ones for an account I have, but there was no way I could possibly remember it.
I don’t keep my passwords on my computer unless they have been emailed to me. I have a book I keep them in. My thoughts are if I have them on my computer and someone steals my computer then they have the access anyways. So, I would never use a spread sheet on Excel for it. But I suppose email is also at risk. Maybe I should remove those also? Maybe this is too much thinking for Monday morning. lol
Never heard of that program and I guess I should seriously look into it. Sometimes I wonder how much we should have on our computer. Great post today. Thank you.

Hi Mary,
A lot of sites are now asking for much stronger ones so you have no choice. It’s for our own good, I know that but they are darn hard to remember. Hopefully with this particular set up that won’t be an issues from now on.
I think that is a heck of a lot of thinking for a Monday! This is the way I look at it and it’s not 100% fool proof. I don’t worry about anything being stolen because I keep a pretty darn good positive attitude about all of that. Guess what! Nothing has been stolen of mine nor hacked. I think when we continue to worry about those things happening then we all know we’re bringing that very thing into our lives. Hey, that way of thinking definitely works for me.
I personally think our computers are pretty safe. It’s when they crash that we run into difficulty if we don’t have a recent backup of all our files. Now that can get us into a heck of a mess.
You just have a great week Mary!

Hi Adrienne
I had my house broke into a number of years back and they stole about $2000 worth of stuff. We put a security door on the back and better locks on the doors and locks on the gates. Later we had someone get into our shed in the backyard. After that we got an alarm system installed with outside monitoring. Had some problems with a few people in the neighborhood that were breaking car windows (they have since moved away). So we installed outside cameras. One morning I noticed all the cameras had been stolen!
I do leave the house and set the alarm but it does concern me. My only hope is that if anybody plans to break in, is that they pick someone else’s house that doesn’t have an alarm. So a little founded concern, I would say….

Wow, Mary that’s horrible.
I’ve had my car broken into three times. Once at work, once at the hospital and once at my home. I’ve never had my home broken into although my next door neighbor has. At that time though I had Blake, my Cocker Spaniel, and I left him in the backyard while I was at work. He wouldn’t take too kindly to someone trying to come in the back way. I live in a gated community so they wouldn’t have been able to come in the front.
I had the cops tell me when it was broken into at the hospital that if these people want what you have there is nothing you can do to stop them. If you make it harder for them then they’ll still try to break in but then go to another car that’s easier. Same thing with homes and I would think anything really.
I can see where you’re be leery, I probably would be too.

I have a system for remembering my passwords which has been working pretty well so far. The only issue I ever really have is that I need password reminders on the sites that I don’t log into regularly.
I’m glad that you found something that works well for you! I think it speaks volumes that you’ve used it so long without any issues. Thanks for always sharing your tips with us! I’ll have to keep that in mind in case I decide to try it out someday!

Hi Stacy,
That’s great that you have a system already in place. This service does keep that information handy so if for some reason it doesn’t automatically come up, you just go to your list, click on edit and then show password. It will bring all that up and then you’ll be prompted to remember it again if needed. For the most part, if I’ve logged into a site and asked LastPass to remember it, it doesn’t matter how long it’s been since I logged in it will bring up that log-in information. Nice!!!
Thanks Stacy and enjoy your week. I appreciate your comment.

I now don’t know what on earth I’d do without it. I use it to generate really strong passwords and I now change my cpanel and wordpress passwords regularly, which I could never be bothered to do before because it was such a hassle. I LOVE it!

Strong passwords are very important. I just published a post this morning about this as well. Similar to the program that you suggested, I’ve been using KeePass and it works very well. It too is available for a variety of platforms and it generates strong passwords for you or you can type in your own creation.
I use to work with a lot of people in a corporate office that simply used “password” as their password, or their spouse or kid’s name.

That is basically true but in the case of Last Pass everything is kept encrypted so unless some one cracks your password and gets on to Last Pass they can’t possible get at your passwords. And with Lass Pass offering so many different second authentication options that risk can be made almost impossible. Plus Last Pass keeps an encrypted copy of everything on your hardware as well so you don’t have to worry about something happening to the site that would lose your data. So while their is always a risk the risk is greatest to not use strong passwords or not be able to manage all the passwords you have. Anyway take a look at last pass FAQ’s and I think you might just change your mind when you see the measures they have gone to too keep things secure and safe.

I’ve use and have recommended Last Pass for some time now and it’s a wonderful program. The only thing you do want to watch is that sometimes you can manage to not get the prompt to save a site after clicking to set up an account. If you do that you may well set up an account and not have the password saved by Last Pass under an account. But fear not the password is still there in the password generator tool. Just go back to the password generator tool and you will find the password that it entered when you set the account up has been saved in it’s drop down list. Other than that one minor issue Last Pass is the best password manager of them all and certainly the lowest priced of the full featured password management tools. (free unless you cover phones and tablets then $1 a month)

I used Roboform a long time ago and to me it’s more for completing a lot of information. Like when you have to sign up for a new account and it asks for your address, phone number, email, etc. then Roboform completes all of that. I’m sure they have the password generator now but their service isn’t free from what I’ve heard. This one is and it will complete a form for you but it won’t put your email address in.

Hi Adrienne,
Looks like everyone has password protection on the brain especially with the recent hacking to some Twitter accounts
I’m one of the ones who has a “default” password for all my accounts but I’ve been changing it slowly but surely. I’m not using a password keeper but my Norton 360 does include a feature that keeps track of login information.
I’ve never heard of LastPass and I also heard of one today called KeePass. I remember getting advice from the IT guy at my old job, he said to log off completely from each program and not just “x” it out and completely log off the computer. This was years ago but it stuck with my and I’d like to say that it’s kept me from becoming a hacker’s next victim.
Thanks for sharing LastPass with us! Have a great week!

At work we use ‘single login’ for all the servers, based on ‘the trusted sites’ principle. If I log in to a system for the first time I have to accept an encrypted key. By accepting the key, I exchange my encrypted personal key with the system and from that point on, the system KNOWS from that key that I am really ME.
Long difficult to guess passwords, changing them every once in a while and making sure you still are using the services is a good way to browse safer…

Oh, that’s never a good thing. And to remember which passwords you used for which site can be very frustrating indeed.
The best way to use this service is every time you go to log-in to a site, put your log-in information in and then ask this service to save it. Going back and moving everything over would be a total nightmare. But if you’re happy with Roboform then at least you’re using a service that helps you.

Hi Adrienne,
I still use the same username and password for any new service that I sign up to. However, most websites or services these days offer Facebook, Twitter or Google logins and it becomes quite easy.
I use Facebook for several websites and services and I never had a problem. Google and Twitter too. All 3 are secure enough.
Though I set a very strong password for my WordPress account, hackers somehow sneaked in. However, once I moved to a different hosting, they couldn’t so shows there might have been a problem with my hosting provider.
Mozilla Firefox has that feature built-in, similar to LastPass and I’ve never had problems with it either.
All in all, my passwords are secure enough. Thanks for sharing this, I’ll check out LastPass now!

I am surprised in the types of passwords people actually have in place. My man’s password is ridiculously easy and to this day I don’t understand why he uses the ones he does. I use a program called LastPass to store my passwords when I am online, but you have to get into my computer first to even access anything.
For instance, I have idiots trying to login to my blog all the time which keeps me on my toes to make sure that the passwords I use aren’t associated to me of any kind. I have worked with Engineer geeks all my life and they taught me to use very difficult passwords. When people know what you love and do, its not hard to try and use the information we put out there to crack your secret code.

I know what you mean so by using things you can relate to or that are easy for you to remember, you’re just making it easy for the hackers because they have a program where the password breaker is running all the time trying to come up with the best fit. We all need to make it extremely hard for them.

Hi Adrienne,
Passwords are becoming more and more important these days. Not that they weren’t before, but now it seems that everyone is trying to hack something, and while the hackers are getting smarter, the passwords are not!
I recently went through and changed all my passwords to something ridiculous – completely random, 15 characters. It is sort of a pain because when I’m in a hurry I can never remember any of them. But I actually use Passpack, which I like a lot. I’m pretty sure there is a free version, with certain limitations. One of the cool things is that you can share passwords. So for me and my husband, where we have a shared account, we can share the entry so that he can log in and see it and I can log in and see it. Or we can keep some private if we want.
It’s been a lifesaver because I can’t imagine someone getting into my accounts and wrecking havoc. I wonder what the next step will be? I’m sure eventually we’ll start moving toward fingerprint and optic recognition. In a way that’s better because nobody can fake your fingerprint, right? A little scary in a Big Brother way but probably safer!

Hi Carolyn,
You are right, life use to be easier for us when we never had to worry about people invading our space. We all have to be more on the ball now though.
Sounds like you’re using something similar so that’s great. I do chance my passwords often as well just to keep things in line. I luckily don’t have to worry about sharing my stuff with anyone.
I agree, they will have to take it to another level eventually. That other stuff makes me nervous and it sounds kind of intrusive. But you will be unique and things will be harder to access.
Thank you Carol for stopping by and enjoy your week.

Hi Adrienne,
Secure password is one of the most difficult problem for people who are on internet. I use firefox internal password mechanism to store my password. I also use a number of ways to generate and remember password. I think Litepass looks very interesting. I would try it out for sure.

Thanks for sharing this information with us

Hi Ashvini,
So maybe you can answer this questions for me since no one has yet. If you save your passwords using Firefox’s internal password mechanism, what happens if your computer crashes and you get another one? I wouldn’t think it’s like Google Chrome where you’re actually logged into Google. That is what I’d be curious to know.
Thanks for your comment and be sure and check out this site. I think it’s pretty darn cool.

Great that you asked this one because it prompted me to find the answer. The passwords, bookmarks and everything personal is saved in a profile in one of the folder. More details here http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-where-firefox-stores-user-data. I hope this helps

Hi Adrienne,
Thanks for such a great advice. I am in the stage where I use the same password for all sites. I guess this is not a good idea. And as I join a site, I write its name on an index card together with the username and passwords. I use the same passwords but sometimes the service asks to add a number or a capital letter, that’s why I write them down to remember.
This LastPass sounds terrific! If you have been using it for 2 years and recommending it, then it must be awesome. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Adrienne for such a great reminder.

Managing your very strong passwords is very important because we all tend to forget what we put down unless we’re keeping some type of record of them. I think the Word document is a good idea but it’s tedious having to go to it each time to locate a password. That’s how I felt with my Excel doc.

Thanks for the great review and information. It’s definitely important to keep this information on serious lockdown.
I’m getting away from using all of the same login information for the various sites. I also use a password vault on my cell phone where I store all of that information. I’ve found that that’s best for me as I always have it with me.
This is definitely a great reminder that we always have to be careful out there. There are far too many people out there who want to take advantage of people online….

I know of friends who have been using LastPass and they have recommended it for me too. I think it’s a popular and one of best as I hear many good reviews of it.
Well, when it comes to passwords I’m not much comfortable in using another software to remember ‘em dear
You know, it’s about trust and yet I’m not convinced much. I did use it few times but so far I’ve been using Google Chrome’s in-build password saving option as they save my information encrypted. We have our own ways of doing things, eh?
Anyway, I’ll give it a try again as you had no issues with it for two years and I can count on your word Adrienne

Now the saving them in your Google Chrome is another option but I’ll ask this question for about the tenth time now because no one has answered it yet. What do you do if your computer crashes? How do you retrieve your passwords? Simple question and I’d love to know the answer.

Hi Adrienne,
Very good question there dear
As Google Chrome is a product of Google, we can link our Google account there. The encrypted passwords, bookmarks and all will synced with our Google account. When we reinstall Windows and install Google Chrome again, we just need to login with our Google account. All the synced data including encrypted passwords will restore right after
That’s why I find it easy for me to keep up with stuff as I’m using only Google Chrome dear
The data can be synced with Google Chrome mobile browser in my mobile if I wants to.
You have a wonderful week there too dear

So all your passwords are stored with Google. I don’t just use Google Chrome though, it’s not my only browser. It’s my main one but not only one. I think it would be pretty safe to say that those files being compromised would be non existent.
Thank you for answering that for me Mayura. I was definitely curious because no one would tell me what would happen.

Thanks for the great tip about LastPass Adrienne, especially as it’s free and can be accessed from another computer. I am getting overwhelmed with my system of storing them in emails which I keep in a folder
It will be so handy when we go away with my husbands laptop. We have all our files synced with SugarSync so we can access all our files from either computer.
I have had to create a more secure password for my email as it got hacked. Luckily the hacker did not change the password and lock me out as sometimes happens.
The tip I got from my IT guy is to think of a phrase that you will remember, take the first letter of each word making the first two capitals and add some numbers at the end to create your secure password.

I’m sorry your email was hacked. That’s horrible and I hate hearing that. You were lucky they didn’t change the password on you.
I prefer to just use one that isn’t related to anything because then you can only come up with so many different variations for them. You need to change your passwords often so it can really get overwhelming.

I used to use a program called KeePass. It is one that you download and install on your computer. The drawback is if your computer dies so will your passwords. The online ones you don’t have to worry about that happening so much, but it does freak me out storing anything online that isn’t absolutely necessary especially when I hear about these big companies getting hacked lately. The only reason I don’t uses KeePass at the moment is because I got a new computer a while back and I didn’t bothered moving them over. And, some of them I didn’t keep up to date so well.
I used to write them down on paper, but that isn’t the perfect solution either. Right now I have a few on paper, and others in a simple text document.
I have heard of LastPass and even checked it out a few times in the past, but I just haven’t been able to give into storing all of my passwords in one place in an online setting yet. Maybe one day though.

For most of us though, keeping them on your computer and then not backing up your files every single day is a bust. Writing them down gets out of hand so if you can come up with a better solution, please please please let us know.
You need to be comfortable with how you handle your passwords so don’t do anything you aren’t comfortable with. I don’t blame you at all.
I appreciate your comment though and sharing that. Now, have an awesome day okay!

I used to have an excel file too, but I found that an excel file takes too long to load up than notepad. So what I have now is notepad. I’ve already been through a lot of articles suggesting the use of this and that software. The blogger in me who has experienced my blog being hacked however has already nurtured this paranoia and fear that automated bots are able to get through anything. And not all scanners can detect the presence of this sly bots/worms. Heck, even the US government websites are not as strong-walled as I thought they were. Look at ussc.gov.
Well, as long as my paranoia remains untamed, I’d probably just stay with notepad. I used some codes that I believe only I understand to encrypt my passwords. But again, I’m not a hundred percent sure of it being hack free. I’m taking a look at LastPass though. Who knows, I might suddenly take a liking for this software.

I find that interesting James and here’s why! You attract into your life what you think about. Being paranoid about this happening because it has will continue to bring that into your life. Or something similar for instance.
I have 100% confidence that all of my passwords are safe and I never worry about things like this. Guess what! Besides my personal email being compromised because of something I did, I’ve never had this issue with any of my sites online, blog included. Maybe I’m one of the few but I just don’t think like that.
Is that a guarantee nothing will happen. I’d by lying if I said yes but all I know is the more you worry about things the more you’re bringing that into your life so I don’t worry about things that are out of my control. I just do the best I can with what I have and I stay in the present moment doing what I’m doing right now.

Hi Adrienne,
I read your post the day it came out and downloaded LastPass. I wanted to try it out before commenting. First of all I work with beginning marketers and the number one frustration I see with them is the “password nightmare.” It takes so much time to keep track of the many sites they need to sign up for such as hosting, WordPress, social accounts etc. Then they have to create passwords and somehow have them available. In the beginning they don’t realize if their business blossoms and actually becomes a business, they will be signing up for many tools, programs, pay processors, etc. With only a couple sites with user names and passwords it’s easy to think all they have to do is remember them, or use the same one for every site. We’ve all been there, haven’t we? Some depend on their browsers. Some keep them in a notebook. Some store them on their hard drive. All of these methods are not secure practices in the long run.
When I started I kept them on a spreadsheet, realizing later how unsafe it really is and using the same password over and over so I wouldn’t forget. For a long time I planned to purchase Roboform. It’s very cheap, something like $5 for a year and it does what LastPass does, but you have to buy it. So it got put on the backburner as “another tool to buy.” I didn’t get around to it and I’ve hated that nagging feeling knowing that my passwords need to be more secure. Hours of wasted time is saved by each site directed automatically to where you need to be. LastPass was the perfect remedy. An easy download, easy platform, secure password generator, one master password, and it’s free!
I’ve used it for about 5 days and so far I love it. I really like the fact that it creates secure passwords and it has the capability to include all platforms…smart phone, PC, etc. I also like the dashboard where all my information is secure in one place. I still have my passwords in a document and the next step is to get to the point I feel secure enough to get rid of it. I know I will at some point. I’ll let you know. Thanks for sharing an excellent tool. I would encourage all beginning marketers and seasoned marketers to grab it and start creating good habits with your passwords. Don’t wait until it’s too late. “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Thanks again!

Hi Raena,
I’m glad you decided to give it a test drive first so that you could actually comment on what you think about their service. It’s like you said, newbie bloggers have no idea how many sites they’ll end up signing up with which is why they go with the same log-in information across them all. We all know how dangerous that can be. Although nothing is ever 100% safe we all have to go in the direction we feel is best for us.
I know that Roboform is a good service too but you have to download that one to your computer or so I’ve been told. You’ll be in the same boat if your computer crashes and end up losing all of that information which is why I love Lastpass. You can just log-in to their service on any computer and access all your information. Nice!!!
I appreciate you testing this out Raena and I’m thrilled that you like this service. As you meet newbies you can recommend they use this one since it is a free service. Maybe one day they’ll charge but it won’t be much. I love that it offers the different variations to for whatever type of computer or service you’re using.
Thank you so much for this and great seeing you last night. We’ll catch up later too. Enjoy your day! Oh, and can’t wait to read your post.

Adrienne, I just downloaded the LastPass on my laptop.
I actually use “Passwords” on my iPhone and this one carries ALL of my passwords in all of my social media, hosting service, domains, twitter, facebook, youtube, etc., etc. Ever since my Twitter got hacked last week, I have put a very difficult password. I either use the “Hostgator password generator” or my “Passwords passwords generator on iPhone.” Before, I was just like you. I created the SAME password for all of my social media, wordpress blogs, hosting service, domains, and so forth. But someone said you should NEVER create the same password for everything. So now, I just use the “passwords generator” and I just cut & paste it.
However, since I don’t have an app to keep ALL my passwords here on laptop, I just write some of the most USED password on my text pad and keep it there. But thank you very much for introducing me to LastPass. You’re a life saver!

Adrienne – I read this article the other day while at the gym, but couldnt leave a response at the time.
I am very impressed by this tool, am sure there are lot of algorithms written to come up with new strong passwords for every service for every member.
It makes one’s life easy instead of trying to remember the various passwords we have provided while subscribing to all those websites.
But all said and done, when a website needs to remember all of my passwords, it has to have a system to store them in a database of some sort, maybe even in an encrypted form. I really am not comfortable having all of my passwords out there in the open, somehow, even when I understand that it is secure and all that stuff. Concept is awesome, maybe I will try it only for some of the services which are not much of a consequence to me and see how it behaves.
Thanks for sharing this info.

Hackers can’t help themselves at times Praveen. It’s like it’s a challenge to them so nothing is ever secure. You just have to feel comfortable enough with their service and if not then don’t. I just never let my thoughts linger that I’m “afraid” that it’s going to be hacked and you know what? None of my sites ever have so that must be saying something about that way of thinking.

This is actually a really great tool for people, especially those who can’t remember all of their passwords! I’m bookmarking it, and I’ll share it. :3 Because there are one too many people who use literally the same password for EVERYTHING, especially their sitely belongings.

Hey Liza,
Thank you and I love this service. I now have so many I have a hard time keeping up.
I appreciate you bookmarking this one and sharing it with your friends. They may be in need as well and then appreciate you for pointing them in the right direction.
Enjoy your weekend Liza.

I’ve started using Dashlane recently and love the freedom of not worrying about passwords any longer! Sounds like LastPass is working great for you, Adrienne.

Hey Ana,
I’ve never heard of that service but this one has been great for over two years now so I’m sure if you feel that one has been beneficial for you then I appreciate you sharing this with us. We always love to hear about new sites that others think work great.
Thank you for sharing that Ana and hope you have a great week.

Thanks for the info Adrienne. I’m not using a strong enough password, as you said because it’s easier to remember the same one. I’ll log into LastPass right now. Thanks again.

Hey Lisa,
I like this program but if you’re happy with your computer’s set up like we discussed then you do which one works best for you. This is definitely an alternative but you need to start changing your passwords to something a lot stronger. That is a must girl.
Enjoyed our chat and you have a great weekend.

I will use what’s on my computer, but I’ll also use the scramble one. Am I still a purple monster? lol Always great chatting with you. Enjoy your shopping and baby shower.

No, you need to go to the gravatar site. It has nothing to do with WordPress.
Go here >>> http://en.gravatar.com/ >>> sign in and make sure your account is set up right and test the link.
I’ve heard so many apps and sites that will help you store password safely. I haven’t tried them though. I know I got to change this habit of having almost identical passwords in all my accounts.

There are literally tons of them I’m sure Sarah so you have to decide what’s best for you. The one thing that you must do though is make all your passwords strong and different. Never sign in to all your accounts with the same one. We’ve all made that mistake in the beginning so as long as we remedy that, we’ll be okay.

I use this all the time and find it essential now. The only slightly bad thing is that I don’t have the extra security turned on on my home PC … just for convenience. May have to change that…

Oh you’re a lover of this service too Shaun! I’m so glad I stumbled upon this one a few years back because I don’t know how I’d be able to keep up with all of my passwords now. Hope you get everything else in place okay!
