My guest today is none other then Dan Sumner who just so happens to be a pro on this topic. I’m so honored to have him and I’m excited for you to learn from his experience.
Without further adieu, take it away Dan..
Do you sell anything on your blog?
Do you give anything away on your blog?
Where do these giveaways lead?
Are you building a list of subscribers/followers?
To what end are you building subscribers/followers?
Did you ask yourself these questions when you started blogging?
The reason I ask these questions is quite simple. Would you like to make an income from your blog? As the blogosphere increases in size and the SEO battle gets harder, the paid ad returns get less and less. Your Google AdSense account looks more and more unstable and you have a very large worry cloud over your head just waiting for the moment the next update kills your traffic. This is not a post about SEO which Adrienne recently spoke about (check it out HERE), it’s a post about promoting yourself, more importantly your own info products.
Content alone is not going to make you money
Yes I know that is a bold statement and one which is a cause for debate, but look at it this way. Take a look at the BIG blogs you see today! For example take a look at Copy Blogger, Pro Blogger, Firepole Marketing and Think Traffic. These blogs all have something in common, they sell online products to their visitors, they drive traffic to not only provide information, but to turn a profit from their readers.
It’s a very simple but effective business model. So, when I say “content alone isn’t going to make you money” we should look to have something in place to compliment our content and create revenue streams. After all, it is nice to turn a profit from your business is it not?
There are numerous ways to make money from your blog and I’m sure Adrienne will back me up here with regard to affiliate marketing and the appeal it has.
The simplicity of passive income is amazing, the thought of driving traffic to your blog for people to click an ad and you the blog owner taking a cut! Wow, how easy could it be? This does however pose a problem, I don’t want to have to write reviews and gear my content to suit affiliate promotions, I also don’t want to give 50% of potential income away! I want to have my cake and eat it too! This leads nicely to product creation and creating your own online income stream.
Creating your income stream
I mentioned earlier “content alone isn’t going to make you money”, so you need to put something in place to compliment your own expert content.
Now remember we are talking about self promotion here and believe it or not, on your own blog people want to know about you, more than what you can promote. That kind of figures doesn’t it? So, when it comes to creating your own products and income streams, products developed by you are going to convert a lot better than products from an affiliate.
Relax, you are already an expert. Personally
I think it is a big step to start creating content for your blog to sell or to give away in exchange for an email address, but think about it for a second? You have readership already, your visitors are glad to exchange email addresses, even cash for your expert opinions or solutions. Here are a few ideas of what you can advertise on your blog to start your own income streams:
Free sidebar/feature box subscription boxes – The most popular of all blogs is the free signup, but there are some rules to follow to get the most from them, for example you should provide something of value. Giving away free stuff should be your best content! Why? It’s a fact you will have more people download/subscribe to your free stuff than buyers of your products. If you provide poor free stuff, who is going to buy your paid stuff?
Gathering subscribers from your free items also paves the way for those people to be introduced to your paid items by way of a sales funnel. You can then advertise your paid items in auto responders and links from your free items.
Webinars – Free content webinars take the free item to the next level. The ability to listen live online then to have the chance to ask questions at the end is very appealing to your visitors. You can also pitch your paid products at the end. The webinar conversion far and away exceeds the conversion from a free eBook.
Paid for downloadable products – How many of your sidebar ad squares are your own products? Most people promote products and ad services they use on a regular basis or products which suite their content well. Think how much better it would be to have your own product there as well? You get to take home 100% of the sale 100% of the time. You also get to retain your subscribers to your own blog without passing them on to others.
Services and high ticket items – Training and coaching are by far the biggest high tickets items you will ever sell from your blog. I’m sure you have seen them before on the blogs you read. We have all seen links in the menu bar to items such as Products and Services, Join Me, Getting Started, 1 to 1 Training etc. etc. Training and high ticket items can be very very lucrative indeed. After all you are the expert, people visit your blog for a reason, so why would they not want 1 to 1 personal training to improve their business?
Advantages of creating your own products
Having your own products free or paid advertised on your blog has distinct advantages over having nothing or affiliate advertised ads. Here are some advantages which you shouldn’t discount:
- Your own products give you an expert status with your readers
- They build trust and respect
- They allow you to increase your revenue
- By having a free download of great value you can build your subscriber base
- You can promote affiliate products and services (if that’s your thing)
- Funnel subscribers and low ticket buyers to high end product buys e.g. 1 to 1 training and monthly recurring billing.
- You can have others promote your products for you on their blogs
As you can see the advantages of having your own products advertised on your own blog are very good indeed. There is a downside to this; however the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages of supporting customers. With your own products you do have to support paying customers especially your high end people.
Whatever your business or blog, I’m sure there is room for producing your own products and services to add extra income streams to your business. Don’t be afraid to experiment with this, if you don’t try you will never measure your success!
