Thankful Thursday – Facebook, Debt, Plagiarism & Tech

January 31, 2013 | By Adrienne Smith

So with this new year comes my monthly “Thankful Thursday” post where I share five posts I found while blog hopping this month that I want to be sure and share with you guys.

I decided to keep it to just five posts because that way I’m not loading you down too much with extra stuff to do. I just don’t want you to miss out!

Now I visit a lot of blogs and I read some awesome content so sometimes it’s just hard to choose.

Okay, let’s get this party started shall we!

Facebook’s Graph Search

Just this month Facebook announced that they would be implementing the new graph search feature. It’s only in beta testing right now and I just was approved yesterday myself.  The lovely Lisa Buben has share exactly what the Facebook Graph search is and whether or not it will change things socially or how you search.

If you haven’t heard about it already, be sure to stop by Lisa’s place and read what she had to share.

Paying Off That Darn Debt

Debt, what a nasty word…  Too many people have more debt then they care to admit.  That is what I love about what Barbara shared is she was one of those people and extremely skeptical of how in the world anyone can pay theirs off when you only have so much money coming in.

Well she learned how to do just that and knocked her’s out of the park not once but twice.  Check out her post and hear her story.  You’re going to want to get your hands on her secret, I did.

Is Someone Stealing Your Content?

Another nasty word, stealing.  It’s happened to so many people and it’s not fun when we learn that our content has been stolen.  Carol interviewed Jonathan Bailey who has an entire site around this very issue.  Unfortunately it was created because he also had his work stolen numerous times.

Be sure to stop by and read his interview and if you’ve had any concerns in this area I’m sure he’s the one to give you advice.

Tips For Online Success

Gosh, more tips!  Well I thought this was a pretty great post because Mauro went and interviewed 101 “experts” on different subjects of how they created success.   He’s got some great names on this list like Derek Halpern, Dino Dogan, Lewis Howes, Chris Brogan, Guy Kawasaki, Yaro Starak, Neil Patel and yours truly!  Oh yeah, what an honor to say the least.

Be sure to check out what they had to say, you’ll find it pretty darn interesting.

Zero To Tech In Only 20 Minutes

I must admit, I was so impressed with Donna.  If you guys know Donna Merrill then you know that the girl doesn’t even know how to add a plug-in to her blog.  So when Kim Castleberry approached her at 2:00 a.m. in the morning to try something out, she even impressed herself.

They did a Google Hangout and Kim walked Donna through how to create her own squeeze page.  So my friends, if Donna can do this then anyone can.  Check this out and see just how easy it really is.

Great Posts Right!

Hopefully you’ve already read these so you’ll have to let me know what you thought.  If you haven’t then please do stop by and read what they had to share. I enjoyed them all.

Remember, I might be including your post on my list some day soon.  I never tell anyone ahead of time that I’m featuring them because I want it to be a surprise.

I appreciate your comments and always sharing my posts with your friends.  If you introduce something to them that they want to know about then they’ll love you forever.  Ah!!!

Hi Adrienne,

What a great idea to share other people’s post.

I know all those the ladies you’re talking about here, as you know, and I’ve been in most of those posts already and I wanted to encourage your readers to go ahead a hop over there. They will most certainly love it!

I do not know Mauro, though, and will check this blogger out!

Thanks for sharing this.

Hi Sylviane,

Thank you for that and I’m just doing what my readers are asking for. I didn’t want to overwhelm them with too much blog hopping so I thought five was appropriate.

Mauro actually contacted me to be in his post so I was delighted and surprised. He didn’t tell me who all he had contacted so when his post went live I was amazed and in awe. I took the time to read through the entire thing. Learned a few things too.

Thanks Sylviane and you have an awesome day.

Hi Adrienne
I love these posts that share other great blogs we have found while blog hopping, I know all of these on your list but I will always visit their blogs again from your links to read posts that I have missed, they all have great content that I can learn from.
I loved watching Donna & Kim on the Google hangout, she did so well in creating her squeeze page :)
Thanks for sharing some great blogs, I hope they will benefit from more traffic.
Hope your week is going great.

Hi Pauline,

That’s awesome news that you’ve already visited their blogs. Mauro is a new one so I’m impressed that you’ve been visiting him already. Hopefully you’ve already read these particular posts because I thought they were definitely good ones.

I got the biggest chuckle with Donna and Kim. I was so impressed with Donna and she is definitely living proof that anyone can do this so don’t be shy.

Thank you Pauline for that and me too. You have a great rest of your week. Mine is going really well, thank you.

HI Adrienne! I am so glad that your blog issues are cleared up – you’re such a sweet person, and that really stinks when it happens. Love your sharing on this too :) You’re more helpful than you probably know when you do.

What great topics you’ve chosen, I am interested in everything! I am glad you are among the group of experts I enjoy learning from.

Have a great day Adrienne! Rock it outta the park!

Hi Robin,

Me too Robin, it was such a nightmare. Just goes to show you I do NOT know everything. Sometimes I’m at such a loss. Just like this morning I get online and my header is gone. What the heck! The files was there but it wouldn’t show up for anything. Scratching my head over that one still.

I do love to help people out and I know for me I enjoy visiting blogs I haven’t visited yet so finding posts like these when they’re sharing stuff they really like is a great start.

I like to make them different topics, not always the same old thing. So have fun blog hopping and tell them I said Hi!

Enjoy your day Robin… You rock girl!

Thank you!! Hope it works out with your header- ugh. I did the WP update last week and my whole website went down. That weird “please stand by” message was up, and I had no idea what to do! Yikes. It’s fixed now, but what a scare when you don’t know all that techhy stuff.

It all of a sudden showed up. I went to three different browsers and none worked. I have NO idea what the heck happened there.

I usually wait a few days before updating mine because there will be bugs and I want them to fix them before I have issues. Sorry that happened to you but it’s all great now.

Keep on smiling Robin!

I hope you’ll enjoy the rest and learn some things too. I appreciate you taking the time Sapna.

Hi Adrienne,
A very wonderful posts you’ve shared here. I’ve never visited any of those blogs but I’ve already fallen in love with some.

I like reading posts like this because it normally exposes me to many other awesome blogs that i don’t know before.

Thanks for sharing Adrienne and hope you’re doing good over there.

BTW: I’ve tried visiting your blog many times with my chrome browser but it kept telling me that the website is unavailable, but i can now access it with Firefox.

Me too, I love these types of post because I get to find me some bloggers that I wouldn’t have found otherwise. Oh, and I learn some new things too.

You are most welcome and enjoy the rest of your week and weekend too.

I had a friend with issues last night with Chrome. Knock on wood I haven’t had those issues yet so no telling. We definitely know my blog is available so I hope Chrome gets their act in gear.

Thanks so much Adrienne for the mention. I have not seen the others yet though I do visit Donna’s blog frequently. I can’t wait to check the others out later too. I want to especially read about content being stolen. I find that fascinating. And very important since Google will not find that acceptable and could hurt our SEO. Paying debt off is one I may share with some friends too. They sound very informative.
Glad to hear all is well now here for you and I can’t believe tomorrow starts another month of 2013. I hope you sure have a fabulous February Adrienne.

Surprise! My pleasure Lisa, I enjoy learning the new stuff that’s happening so I appreciate your share on Facebook’s graph search. I’m liking it so far.

If you haven’t seen the video of Donna and Kim then you’re going to get a good laugh. It will most definitely help your non-techie friends too.

I loved the interview Carol did with Jonathan because there are certain measures we need to take which is why he created a site around these. Yay for us, not so good for the bad guys.

Now Barbara told an interesting story about how she was so skeptical at this seminar about paying off your debt but came home and gave it a try and was shocked. Luckily for me, I don’t have a lot of debt but that’s because I did some things like she did and paid all mine off. You’ll enjoy that post I’m sure.

Thank you Lisa and today is my niece’s birthday. Can’t believe she’s getting older but that means we are heading into another month tomorrow. Let’s kick some you know what Lisa. Now have a great weekend.

The plagiarism and the 101 experts were my fav., but great list :)

I might have to do something similar on my site. A best of “articles on creativity”. There’s so much good stuff out there, but it’s hard to find sometimes in a sea of content.

I really liked Derek Halpern’s advice on getting traffic. That was one of my fav. pieces of advice on the list.

Thanks for sharing, Adrienne!

Good Denise, thanks for sharing that. Plagiarism is no laughing matter so I’m glad Carol introduced us to Jonathan so now we have a go to guy just in case.

I learned a lot from the 101 experts post. You have to put the time aside to read every single one but it’s worth it.

I know…what I do is when I come across a post that really stands out to me I’ll put it in a text file so by the end of the month I have several. Some are about the same topics I write about but I like to share ones on different topics I don’t necessarily cover but would love my readers to know about if they haven’t visited those blogs. I think it would be a great idea on creativity. Give them more to think about.

Derek rocks and walks the talk Denise. Glad you enjoyed his blurb.

Thank you for your comment and have a great weekend.

Hi Adrienne,

It’s a great thankful Thursday post! The beauty of this post is that nobody knows who’s going to be featured on it – a great way to create interest and suspense! :)

I opened up all the posts as I kept reading your post, and it was fun doing so. I got to learn few new things in few minutes. I had already been to Donna’s and Lisa’s place, so their posts weren’t new to me. But I did learn one good thing from Barbara’s post that a debt pay back plan is like a diet plan. You got to have some restriction on spending and stick to the saving rules you make. There are so many ways to save money and one got to be hopeful and optimistic. Though thankfully I’m in no financial debt.

Thanks for Carol’s interview post on plagiarism – this one is of interest to me and I’m going to read it till the end. I want to know how to deal with people who steal my content. Mauro’s post is simply superb – so much of wisdom about how to grow on the web – I gotto read this too!

You’ve given me so much matter to read and learn, and now I really think I did the right thing to vote for you to have the thankful Thursday posts. :)

Thanks again Adrienne for making all the efforts, your today’s post is of immense help to me. :)

Glad you enjoyed what I shared here and yeah, no heads up. I just want them to be surprised that they were mentioned.

Glad you’ve already read a few of them because you already visit their blogs. That’s what I really love to hear Harleena. For those that you haven’t I’m sure you’ll learn something new. The debt is a big subject and one that a lot of people are concerned with right now. Just from her own experience, I had to share that one. I definitely don’t write about it.

Sorry if I overloaded you with more posts to read but I promise you, you won’t be disappointed. We can all learn something and not have more go to guys in case we need advice on any of these matters.

You are so very welcome and thank you as always for stopping by today and your comment. Enjoy the rest of your week and have a fabulous weekend.

I enjoy these Thankful Thursday posts of yours! It’s great to see some posts I’ve missed from the week and I think each time you’ve shared someone that I’ve never met before.

I’m curious to check out the post about content stealing. I use Tynt social report which tells me how many times content was copied from my site. The nice thing about Tynt is that it automatically adds a link to the copied content which does generate some pageviews. They email me the reports weekly along with other interesting tidbits about my site.

Ah, why thank you Sue and I do hope you’ll enjoy them all.

Lisa’s share about Facebook made me run right over and sign up. Glad I did now, cool feature.

No one wants their content stolen but if they do then we now have someone to go to and find out what we can do to resolve this issue. Now you’re really going to enjoy watching Donna put that squeeze page up. It’s a hoot Sue.

Thank you for your lovely shout out, I appreciate that.

You enjoy your weekend now.

Hi Adrienne

Got your email this morning and although I know it is the end of the month (my daughter’s B-Day),it was still a “oh, yeah it really is the last day of the month!” I can’t believe how fast this month has gone.

Great selection of sites show-cased today. Bookmarked a couple of them as there is some really valuable information. Have dealt with some plagiarism in the past and it ended up consuming so much of my time and some of which I never got resolved. Some I found don’t seem to understand what they are doing and others have been persuaded to believe it is okay to use snippets of other people’s work. There is a plugin that someone sold to do just that. I did straighten the user out and he apologized and removed all of it off his site. Something like a thousand articles from all sorts of authors. I know there are some really awful people out there that sound real good on the front end. Then they want to teach people how to hack into other people’s sites and redirect commissions to their own. “Really great programs!” Just don’t understand these kinds of people. Wouldn’t want them visiting my house, who knows they would probably walk out with the family heirlooms!

Have a great weekend.

Hi Mary,

Today is your daughter’s birthday? It’s my niece’s too which I always remember is on the last day of this month. I hope she has a great day!

Wow, that’s horrible you’ve had to deal with that. You are right though, people are actually teaching others how to do that and that it’s okay. I’ve had my share of misguided information myself and I honestly didn’t know any better because I hadn’t been around long enough to learn. Of course I do have a whole heck of a lot of common sense so a lot of that I wouldn’t do and I’m so glad I didn’t. I saw some pretty big names get some accounts shut down because of what they were teaching and who was sorry now! Huh!!! Okay, sorry for that little rant.

Thanks Mary for your comment and you guys have a great day.

Hi Adrienne,

That’s so sweet of you sharing other people’s blogs! I just learned that you do that every last Thursday of the month and you call it Thankful Thursday. That’s awesome!

I have been to Lisa’s blog several times but I didn’t read this specific post about Facebook graph search. I will sure visit her blog and read this post as I read something about Facebook graph search and I didn’t know what it is about.

I will be visiting the other blogs as well to check their posts for sure as I trust your judgement.

Thanks for sharing these blogs with everyone, you are amazing Adrienne.

Be Blessed,

Hi Neamat,

This is pretty new actually, I just started it last November upon the request of my readers. Give the blogs I visit a time to shine if I include their post and we all love finding blogs we haven’t visited before. Hey, it’s a win/win for everyone right! ;-)

The Facebook graph was just introduced last month and is still in beta but because of Lisa’s post, I signed up to be one of those to check it out. I think it’s actually pretty cool and I’m liking it much better then the old search feature. So far, so good.

Nothing like giving you something else to do right Neamat! Thank you for your comment and your kind words.

Enjoy your weekend.

I have a friend that had a bunch of his content copied and stolen a while back. He had a heck of a time doing anything about it. I remember he did contact the site owner and they said that he copied them from their site. I don’t recall what became of it.

I know people use my images in their posts sometimes, and they use my bandwidth when doing so. It used to bother me and I would block some so they at least had to manually download them and upload them to their site. I just gave up watching for it because I was wasting too much time, and I figured I’d never catch it all anyway. It is a bummer though when someone copies your stuff word for word and doesn’t even bother to change it up a little.

hey Ray,

Wow, a fight over whose content belongs to who. Now that’s scary!

I’ve recently heard about people using others images and just linking to them instead of uploading it to their own sites. How it could pull down your bandwidth and that’s not a good thing Ray. I would have to figure something out if people abused me in that way. I can see where it could be a drain on your time but still, that’s just not right.

The copying content is just wrong and those people need to be dealt with, I agree.

I hope that never happens to you again Ray and thanks for sharing that with me.

What a great variety of posts you have chosen. I love that they are varied and all on helpful topics. I have not visited them all yet but will get there.

I never cease to be amazed at the amount of wonderful information that we have access to via some pretty amazing blogs.

I started to watch Donna and Kim the other day before my computer did a wobbly so thanks for the reminder to go back there.

Also thanks for your help today. Have a lovely weekend.

Hi Sue,

I have SO many blogs that I visit each week but I do like to keep what I share with my readers on different topics. Now I know last month I had a lot of post about Google+ but they were all different. I thought these topics were pretty good one.

I know what you mean, I learn so much from my blogging friends. I love that too Sue!

When you have the time, you’ll want to watch Donna and Kim. It really was a good learning lesson for us all.

Glad your computer is back to normal and I enjoyed our conversation. Thanks Sue and have a good weekend.

Thank you Adrienne,

It’s after 2:30 (which is why I had a giggle at Donna & Kim’s video). Carol’s interview with Jonathon Bailey was eye-opening for me. I can’t imagine people blatantly stealing content. I am setting aside some time, this weekend, to have a look at Mauro’s post… I can see there will be a lot of great info there.

I love your Thankful Thursday posts – such an awesome idea. Hope your weekend is terrific.

Glad you enjoyed the video though as well as what Jonathan shared. It’s happening more and more now Jen and it’s just wrong that others would steal your content. The nerve.

Yeah, Mauro’s post is a long one but if you need some advice that’s the post. Great tips.

Adrienne,
I read them all and the best one was Donna’s.
I can’t believe how non-techie she is. She can’t even install her own plugin.
N the end she made a fantastique squeeze page. It was hilarious watching her create it from scratch.
That plug-in is going to help so many people and put a lot of designers out of business.

Yeah, Donna’s a riot but she’s like a lot of people online. Scared to do something they aren’t familiar with so they just don’t. Great lesson for everyone I think. And you’re right, she ended up with a great squeeze page so watch out cause a lot of people are going to be snatching that one up.

Have a great weekend Annie!

Well good morning Miss Barbara! Happy Friday to you too!

Girl, everyone could use some of the information you’ve shared. I’ve done that myself now, paid my debt off twice. To hear how it’s done from someone who has done it too and was a non believer, that is saying something so I had to share that.

Donna’s video with Kim was a riot. Of course we know Donna so we knew she wasn’t techie at all but for Kim to rope her into doing this on video then that says a lot about just how easy this really is. Now they have that video to walk them through too.

Glad you enjoyed my recommendations and I’ve already got two for next month can you believe it!

Enjoy your weekend and I’m excited about your show tomorrow.

These sound like some great posts and a few new people for me to connect with!

I know Lisa and Donna but I don’t know the others so I’ll be sure to pop over when I can and check out their blogs.

The getting out of debt one sounds interesting. We got out of debt using some software called YNAB (You Need A Budget) and now we couldn’t live without it. It keeps us on track with finances and we’re well on the way to following all 4 of the rules – the fourth one being Live on Last Month’s Income.

Great shares Adrienne as always.

Have a great weekend.

Glad to hear you know Donna and Lisa so I’m sure you’ll enjoy what these others have shared. I love that you’ve gotten out of debt yourself Tim and that software sounds pretty good. I’ve done that myself a few times and I don’t like beyond my means. I think actually people would be shocked at what I live on but that’s because I own everything and my expenses are dirt cheap, even where I live. Probably why I stay where I am.

Thanks for stopping by Tim, I know you’re a very busy guy. Always great to see you and especially good to see your comment.

I have already read, tweeted and shared Barbara’s post about getting out of debt. I went through a similar experience a few years back and can totally relate. I have seen debt eating my friends alive, and it is not pretty. The freedom and reduced stress that comes from having no debt is worth any sacrifice to get there.

I look forward to learning about your Beta testing experience with Graph Search.

As always, very useful! I think perhaps the most important thing that has happened this week is that new FB search feature: it could really, really change marketing. We’re into a new era, that’s the way I see it!

We all know that people follow their friends’ recommendations when they buy anything, be it a car or a book! And now FB has systematized this aspect of our lives, it has put it online, one click away, wow!

It does raise some interesting privacy issues, though. I can’t wait to see how all this will play out! Thanks Adrienne for giving me this precious link!

I’ve seen the new Facebook graph search, and honestly I hate it. :L I can hardly find my friends enough as it is, as I keep getting suggestion on who I should add rather than who I actually know and want to add. I wish I had enough PHP and other forms of coding knowledge to make something better, but for now I’ll have to stick to simple scripts and things that I know, as well as expanding what I know just slightly by trying something new each and every time. :p

Barbara’s post is being bookmarked for when I actually have money coming in. :p I’m in debt due to a misunderstand with Avon, and then my mom caused trouble for me with a hospital bill (which I decided to make her pay since I was under 21, and she promised to take care of it). I can’t work, so I can’t exactly pay off any debt, and the collectors don’t understand that my request for the $5/mo. is barely what I can afford — but much better than their “compromise” for $20/mo. until it’s paid off. -.- I’m just like, “So if I do that, I lose my cell phone. If I lose my cell phone, I become an introvert and unable to contact people in case of an emergency. My siblings can’t contact me, and you don’t understand how bad that is.” I’m tired of their threats. Their last one made me want to just kill myself, so I told them I’d start recording them because of their threats and then report them to the police. They haven’t called back since. .-.

I DID NOT KNOW YOU COULD GET IN TROUBLE FOR COPYING BLOGS! My blogs have been copied word-for-word in the past, including my pictures. It was annoying. All I know to do is to contact the person themselves, and if they don’t reply (I’ve been blocked by said people before), then I just contact their host.

Thanks for sharing these! It was nice seeing other blogs. New blogs, fresh bloggers, etc., or just simple: people I’ve never heard of/met. :)

I’ve never thought that Facebook’s search feature was all that great to begin with either Liza. Back when it first came online it was so much easier to find people then today. It’s like you have to be friends with them in order for them to come up and well that kind of defeat’s the purpose of why we’re searching for them to begin with. Dah!

It’s definitely going to be pretty hard to pay off your debt when you don’t have any income coming in. You’re right Liza so I hope that’s all resolved in the very near future for you.

If those people’s are giving you credit for it being your post then that’s okay. Where it’s wrong is when they aren’t giving you credit for it being your content. Be sure to check out Jonathan’s site and he’s got some suggestions of what you can do besides notify those people and request it being moved. Luckily, I’ve never had that happen to me.

You are so welcome and glad you were introduced to some new bloggers. I appreciate your comment, thanks for sharing.

Most of working class America, and Norway too, lives paycheck to paycheck never really making enough to set aside. Debt is a huge issue but Barbara has some great suggestions for you if you’re open.
