Thankful Thursday: Google+, List Building, Social Media, Twitter, Top Blogs

March 27, 2014 | By Adrienne Smith

How has your month been going?  Can you believe it’s almost over?

Spring may be in the air for us here in Houston but I know some states are wondering when the heck it will show up for them.

Since the month is winding down that means this is the last Thursday so I have some posts to share with you today that I’ve run across this month.

They consists of learning a few things like how to grow your Google+ connections without even posting a single thing to how to grow your list which you know I just shared a little about that in my last post.

I have something though that really bothers me and I was happy to run across a post that pretty clearly spelled that all out and then of course we have to add some fun in there too right!

So you ready to see what I have for you this month?

Okay then, here we go.

Rapidly Grow Your Google+ Connections Without Creating a Single Post [Video]

Google+ is gaining ground in social media so for those of you using this platform you might enjoy what Ryan has to share.  As the title states, it’s about how you can accomplish this without even creating a single post.  I know, is that really possible?

I love blogging and I believe everyone should be doing it if you’re here to build a serious business.  But on Google+ Ryan is sharing how you can get in front of the right connections even if you’re not blogging.  Are you even curious to find out how?  If so then be sure to check out his post and see what he’s suggesting.  By the way, he’s a Triberr buddy of mine and he shares really great stuff.

List Building Technique Using Twitter And Click To Tweet

So last week we talked about list building right!  I believe if you’re here to build a serious business online then it’s something everyone should be doing.

Well Brian is sharing something he learned about using Twitter along with your list building tactics.  Now I don’t personally use the Click To Tweet service but you can still learn what he’s done and get some good ideas about how you could possibly implement something like this as well.

Be sure to read the comments too because you’ll find even more suggestions.

How You’re Annoying Your Social Media Connects and Not Know It

We all get annoyed, admit it!  There are things that people do online that really get under our skin.  We shouldn’t let it bother us because my belief is that the majority of these people are new and don’t know any better or they just haven’t been taught the proper ways to do things.  Then again you have those that do and just don’t care.

I really enjoyed it when I stopped by Steven’s blog and he was sharing some of his pet peeves with us and as I was reading along I was nodding my head.  Come on, you know the ones…  Curious to know what really makes him mad?

How to Find Your First Tweet! (Are You Brave Enough to Look?)

Here is one of the fun posts and hopefully you stopped by Carolyn’s blog the other day when she shared this one.

If you can believe this, Twitter is celebrating it’s eight anniversary so they decided to do something fun and let you go back and find your very first tweet.  I believe it was last year that I actually downloaded all of my tweets so I had seen it then but it wasn’t fresh in my mind.

Have you checked yours out just for the fun of it?  What was your first tweet?  Mine was, “Working on a video for my MySpace profile…Sure having fun”.  It was August 14, 2008 so that’s how long I’ve been on Twitter.  Oh and if you stop by her post, be sure to congratulate her for making the top 100 bloggers on Triberr list.  I missed it by a few darn it.

2014 #IBCT Nominations –The Best 256 Blogs in the WORLD

Every year Darnell hosts the The International Blogger Championship Tournament as a celebration of online successHe created this tournament to inspire and motivate bloggers to be the best they can be by learning from who he felt were the best in the blogging business.

Along with this post he shared the best 256 blogs in the world according to the Alexa ranking and although I do not obsess over numbers it’s still pretty cool to see yourself on a list like this.  Yep, yours truly definitely made that list and I bet you might see yourself there too.  Want to take a look?  Aren’t you just a little bit curious?

Happy Reading

I hope you enjoy what I’ve shared this month just in case you didn’t get an opportunity to stop by and read a few of these posts.  I know we’re all busy, me included, but I try to make it by as many blogs as I can.

Be sure to let me know what your first tweet was now and if you made that list.  I’m curious to know both!

Always appreciate your comments and shares so thank you ahead of time and happy reading.

Hi Adrienne, Wow, thanks for the mention! That was a fun post, both for looking back at your first tweet but also at the comments. A lot of readers shared their first tweets in the Comments section and they were fun to read! I hope if your readers stop by my article they will be brave enough to check out their first tweets and, even braver, share it in the Comments section there!

Thanks for the other recommendations. It’s been a crazy busy week for me too so I haven’t had a chance to make the rounds as much as I would have liked to. I will definitely be checking these other articles out.

I hope you have a restful weekend ahead, Adrienne!

Hi Carolyn,

Thank you for stopping by and sorry I’m a little late responding. Our electricity went out sometime during the night so my alarm didn’t go off. Man I hate when I’m running late.

I had to share your posts because so many people were having so much fun with that. If they haven’t found out about that then those that love Twitter well I thought they’d enjoy it for sure. I did browse through some of them too and it’s funny to look back.

Hope your week pans out too and settles down. Heck, it’s almost over now girl. Have a great weekend too okay!

That post definitely deserves a round of applause! You did a tremendous job of connecting us with our history (the beginning) with Twitter. A very special thing!

Adrienne – it gives a sense of pride for us to see you in the list of 256 top blogs in Darnell’s list. Way to go!

Have a terrific Thursday!

Hey Leora,

As I read posts throughout the month I keep a list of ones that I thought were either a little different or had something I really wanted to share. I know that as we read blog posts a lot can say the same thing but I just really look for those that stand out to me. When I don’t get around to as many posts as I had hoped then that’s when I get into some trouble! LOL!!

You were definitely honest Leora and thank you for sharing that. At least it’s not promoting something which is how much of us were taught.

You have a great day my dear and a fun weekend too.

Whew! I’m not doing any of the things that annoy Steven in social media. I hate most when I get tagged in photos on Facebook, and then all those comments from others pour in. Sooooo dang annoying. I know I just have to hit DELETE, but it’s still a pain in the you know what! Thanks for this Thankful Thursday and all the great info, Adrienne. (I’m also enjoying your B School notes.)

Hi Sheryl,

Good for you and me either. Like you that annoys the heck out of me and I’m often times tagged because someone put out a new post although I’m not mentioned in the post. They just want me to know and I hate the way Facebook keeps changing things so now I just stop notifications instead of untagging me altogether.

You are so very welcome for the info and the notes. Hope they’re helping although I doubt you need help! ;-)

Have a great day Sheryl!

Hey Adrienne
Some interesting finds here for sure. I had been meaning to watch Ryan’s video, I usually follow most things he publishes – time is the issue right now :> just listening to Nathalie’s video as I write this!
This list of blogs is interesting because sites that rank below me on Alexa are on the list. So not sure how this list was really compiled, but it is in the end just a list. Congrats on getting on there, you certainly deserve it.
Hope your week is going well

I have no idea either and my number really continues to rise so I’m not sure if something recently happened which I heard someone say something about another update in the background so who the heck even knows. Either way it’s fun to be on a list that gets passed around I admit. ;-)

Thank you Ashley for your comment and hope your week is going well too. So far so good.

Hey Steve,

Coming up on five years so you’ll have to go and check out that site to see what your very first tweet said. Are you at least curious?

I found Ryan’s post good of course and I also liked what Brian shared because it’s another little something to get the word spread around about what you share. Cool little tips my friend.

37 degrees today! Wow, that’s down right freezing to me Steve. It’s suppose to be in the mid 70′s today but they’re calling for rain. Who knows with our weather. It’s cloudy but it was like that yesterday too with maybe 30 minutes of rain and then the sun came out. Our weather is weird.

Appreciate the visit and you enjoy this posts and your day.

Wow, that sounds interesting having spring at that time of the year. Our spring is here for sure but we’re going to have some rain today as well or so they predict. The way I always put it is that it’s going to rain someone in our town but it just might not be at my house. Houston is huge so a lot of the times it misses us. Good luck with it missing you.

Mine actually have gone up as well. I had to get rid of Chrome because it kept crashing on me so I think the one I have installed for Alexa isn’t working well. I hate when they add toolbars so right now FireFox isn’t giving me many choices so I’m not happy about that at all. Urggggg

What was your first tweet Tim? Care to share? How long have you been on Twitter? I can’t believe it was 2008 for me but I was doing a lot of affiliate marketing so I was only before I started blogging. Interesting for sure.

Brian’s was pretty good so I’m going to do something similar to that, not exactly the same thing but it’s a great idea. I have that in my report actually but no where else.

I had to switch back to Firefox a few weeks ago myself Adrienne. I loved Chrome but it was freezing up and sometimes crashing my computer. I have no idea why. Do you know when I started having problems with it Brian? After Mitch told me it might be my browser and to uninstall it and reinstall it so that my comments wouldn’t go to his spam box. Ever since then it just started crashing on me but it acted like I had closed all the tabs instead of it crashing. I tried everything and of course they told me in the forum it was probably malware when you’ve done everything else but I’ve scanned my computer with three different programs and that’s not it. No one can explain to me why it keeps happening so I had to just go back to FireFox. Urggggg

Thank you and I was definitely honored for sure. Kind of cool actually!

I’ve never been a patient person and when I first came online I most definitely was not. As time went by and I started learning from different people I kind of thought I was doomed. I didn’t feel comfortable doing a lot of what they were teaching so I just decided one day I’d do it my way and we’ll just see where the chips will fall. Guess I was right going with my gut and through it all I picked up some patience along the way. Yay!!!

I think most of our first tweets were pretty embarrassing too Mark so you’re not alone. Chicken! LOL!!!

You are so welcome and happy reading.

I like when you do these posts Adrienne, I get to meet new people and check out their blogs.

Each one of these bloggers you introduced us to has something I could use like Ryan’s post about growing my G+ connections.

I’m definitely going to check out Carolyn’s post and see if I can find my first tweet. I can imagine how lame it was LOL.

And since I’m looking for list building ideas, I’ll be stopping by Brian’s blog as well.

I took a quick peek at Darnell’s post and there are quite a few bloggers I know on this list….how awesome is that!

Thanks again for introducing us to these bloggers. I’m looking forward to connecting with them.

I hope you had a great Thursday! Stay dry!

I thought Ryan’s was very good indeed and I know you will too! Very smart I must say. Carolyn’s is fun and they’ll definitely find your first post and I think most of ours were pretty lame. Brian had a cool idea too so you’ll love that one. I was flattered with Darnell’s list and recognized a few names myself.

You are so very welcome and thank you for dropping by. Hope you’ve been enjoying your week and yes indeed, I’ve been staying dry. You too okay!

Hello Adrienne,
This is indeed a nice combination of blog topics that might worth the time. When i saw the post, the first post i dive into was How to grow our Google+ by Ryan. The post was indeed filled with information and i must confess that i loved it.
I will be checking other bloggers post as soon as the time permits me :)
You sure know how to pick them :)
Thanks for the lovely post and do have a wonderful week ahead…

Thank you, I appreciate you saying that. When you have some time I hope you’ll check them out. I know you’ve been really busy but hope you’re doing well.

Hi adrienne; lots of great stuff here. I didn’t make the list of 256 but there is always next year. In my comment I asked him if he knew if there were any blind bloggers that made the list. and my first tweet was jan 14 at 1:14 pm and said if david letterman can do it i can too. this was funny because it made me think of all the people who have told me that they tried something new or scary because of some of the things I have ben doing. hope you are having a good week so far. Take care, Max

Good morning Max,

Thank you Max and I was wondering if you had checked out your first tweet yet. Good one, I think better than Matt Cutts was about his cat. LOL!!! I don’t know every single blogger on that list and I’m sure Darnell doesn’t either but I doubt there is another blind blogger on that list. So guess we better get to work and get you on there right!

Thank you my friend for stopping by and I sure hope you have a wonderful day. More rain is coming so stay in and stay dry! ;-)

Hi Adrienne; I thought it was a cool first tweet definitely nothing to b ashamed of. and farnoosh’s brother is a blind blogger so maybe he will be the first on the list. been out meeting more other blind bloggers lately and have been dismayed by the lack of comments on their sites. I am chasing a sale today so wouldn’t have been outside anyway. smile one of my clients wants all his junk or i should say quality used rides gone in the next 14 days. Its good to work with a motivated seller with realistic prices but it also means lower commissions when successful. you stay dry too sweetie, Max

Hey Max,

You’re right, it was a cool first tweet.

I don’t doubt there are more blind bloggers out there we just never seem to run into them in our circle. That’s why I was so thrilled to meet you Max. Sounds like you can help them with regards to how to get comments and they’ll love you for it.

Well the day has definitely turned out gorgeous and I doubt we’ll end up getting any rain. That just means we get to walk today, yay! Hope you get the sale but sorry for the low commission. At least it may help you with regard to who he would recommend in the future.

Hi adrienne; I had received warm welcomes from you and so many other great bloggers. so yes i am having fun encouraging them suggesting sites and preaching blog commenting. think i have two out of my three for the writing blog hop that are blind bloggers. was shooting for all three. and the people are good people the rides have just ben sitting a long time in a coastal climate. we both know what that means. smile they didn’t have a plan for keeping their equipment line up fresh so i am working with them on a plan to recognize under performing equipment so they can relocate it to another park or sell it before time and weather get to it. ideally we wouldn’t want equipment going into storage we would want it to go from being taken down at one place to being put right back up on another. and its a teaching point where i can show other ride owners the value of constantly updating their photos and videos of equipment so they are ready to sell if and when they need to. thanks for the beautiful weather. my doggie and i both appreciate it. take care, Max

Yep, I definitely know how things can be when left out in our weather so I hope though that you find this worth your time.

Enjoy the weather my friend and I’ll do the same.

I probably wouldn’t have thought about that to be honest with you so I had to share that with my readers because I just talked about building your list.

Don’t feel bad, I think all of us have just had so much on our plates lately and we haven’t been able to promote our own posts and get around to many more. But I think that what’s holding us up will be worth it as the year progresses and I hope that’s the case for you too!

I’m so sorry spring hasn’t peaked through for you yet. Although our weather is definitely in the spring temperatures we’ve had a couple of rainy days lately. Yuck but like everyone else, we need the rain. Suppose to have a pretty weekend though so looking forward to that. Hang in there, hopefully it will be there soon.

The day has turned out beautiful. They told us more rain today but the sun is shining and it’s 82 degrees. Suppose to be that way throughout the weekend but we did need the rain. I just hate the humidity, it doesn’t do a thing for my hair! LOL!!!

I missed the Thursday post, so wishing you a wonderful Friday.

It’s so encouranging when we receive tweets and likes from our visitors and it just increases the energy of blogging ten times or should I say a hundred times. Till now, I had been focusing on Facebook and Twitter and hadn’t had much time to focus and create community on Google+ . But I think it’s time to do that now.

Also thanks for sharing Ryan’s views on how to create a following on Google+ without a single post. It’s very helpful. :)

Have a nice weekend! :)

Hi Adriennne,

Almost finished my Thankful Thursday blog reading.

Learned from Ryan that I had at least done the right thing by going around and commenting with Google+, Plus Steven had some tips that will help!
To me, Google+ is somewhat invasive or almost spammy…cause it wants to share to
much and sometimes to people you don’t want to bother.
Guess is is all part of the learning curve.

Ryan’s information was really good and although I know about commenting on other people’s information I never put those two together. Learned something new from him and what Steven shared as well. I find a lot of that on the different platforms annoying and I’m not sure why some people don’t just use their common sense when it comes to that. I guess it’s a process and as you said, part of the learning curve.

Hey Geri,

I appreciate that, thank you and I must say that with consistency it shouldn’t take that long. I shared on my site many times that I had created a blog when I was going through some training back in 2011 and within five months with only posting once a week I was able to get my Alexa ranking to 125K and that’s impressive. Only once a week.

List all lists and all rankings we never know how accurate that is but I know that mine goes up and down constantly too. Mine has actually climbed this year instead of the other direction but we both know I had a lot of hosting issues which of course prevented people from even visiting my blog so those numbers vary a lot. Here today and gone tomorrow, it’s that easy.

Oh good and have fun! It’s quite the list now. ;-)

You have a great rest of your week and hope all is going well.

Hi Adrienne great roundup.

The one that you had there that really interested me was the list building technique using twitter and clicktotweet. I need to get on that because it was some really good stuff that was shared. I think I used click to tweet in ONE blog post on my blog and nothing since, so it’s a tool I’ll have to use more often.

Also, congrats on making that list. Hopefully one day I’ll be able to make that list too. I think I have to start putting out more engaging and informative content in order to do so … or I may just have to market myself better and get out there. Either way congrats on that and I’m going to be working hard to also make that list … hopefully in the next few years.

Have a great weekend.

Thank you and I was very flattered and surprised. It’s about how many people visit your actual blog so you’ve definitely got to put yourself out there in order to get the traffic coming back. It will build up over time though. Consistency is the key.

Hey Adrienne,

Thanks for the shout out I appreciate it.

The #iBCT rankings are based on Alexa score. For a site to be eligible it must be a “blog” that means it allows comments WITHOUT registration and it’s owned by no more than a few individuals.

I have to say the results are very telling for example Neil Patel’s site shot up the rankings from last year after he introduced that tool of his that evaluates a blog.
