Marketing Tips the Walking Dead Could Teach You about Blogging

February 18, 2013 | By Adrienne Smith

It’s the third Monday of the month which means I have a wonderful guest post for you today.

Now most of you probably know the lovely Sonia Winland and if you haven’t been by her blog you’ll have to make a point of visiting.  She has a passion for marketing and the desire to help others just like me.

She also does a fabulous interview series and I had the pleasure of being one of her latest.

It seems Sonia loves all things creepy so she’s shared a very interesting comparison for us today.  You’ll get the point she’s trying to make once you dive in.  So, check this one out…

The Walking Dead, if you haven’t heard, is the most-watched show on cable. If you don’t know what this show is about, it’s about a group of people trying to survive a zombie apocalypse. I have to admit I am a huge fan and watch it religiously.  On the other hand, horror shows might not-be your cup of tea, but you can’t write-off their success and its marketing ability to suck you in.

Week to week, The Walking Dead has fans hang on every episode to see what will happen next and if someone’s fate is-sealed.  Here are some marketing tips to keep your readers sucked in too:

Build Your Team

In the beginning, not everyone got along on the Walking Dead. T-Dog and Merle were at each other’s throats- ready to kill one another, but in the end, T-Dog did try to help Merle before leaving.  Even in the worst circumstances, people will be at odds with each other, but sticking together is the only way we will survive. Rick knew this early on and worked to bring them together to keep them all alive.

Result:  You can’t build a business without an audience. Sharing, commenting and networking with others will help you understand that you can’t do it alone. We should always strive to create a message that is sharable, helpful and has value.  The bigger your community the more help you get help in the end.

Element Of Surprise

Imagine the surprise when fans found out that once you die, you come back as a zombie anyway (I hope I didn’t ruin that for anyone).  The Walking Dead Show knows how to create mystery and keep its secrets to the end that creates a jolt in us all. When Carol’s daughter came out of Hershel’s barn as a walker, I can remember my mouth dropped in complete surprise. What a way to end the 2nd season!

Result:  Keep readers guessing on what you will do next.  Revamp your website or create content about common problems we all face and translate that into content to help others.  Mix it up with videos, tutorials, humor, and anything else. How can you relate a topic differently from someone else? Keep your content interesting, in your own voice and slap some personality in there.  People read from whom they like.

Aim for The Right Target

My favorite character is Daryl. He does not take crap from anyone and relies solely on his crossbow (for the southern girl in me).  While everyone else uses a gun, he prefers his crossbow to kill off any “walkers” coming towards him. A gun creates a lot of noise, which draws too much attention, and before you know it, walkers surround you.  End of story for you.

Result: Who is your target audience? Aiming for the right audience isn’t easy and for some, hard to figure out. Use your resources and read comments from your audience to see what they love and what they hate. Their response tells a bigger story.

Communication

There were many secrets on the Walking Dead and one was Lauri finding out that she was pregnant. We all know its Shane’s (my friends beg to differ), but instead of telling her husband sooner, she tried to take pills to force an abortion. In addition, how can we forget about how Hershel kept dead walkers in his barn with his guest’s only steps away!

Result: Lying about anything online will get you into deep trouble and creates mistrust. If you blog or run a small business, communication is crucial to keep your vision alive.  How do we communicate with our readers?  Do you engage with them or leave them out in the cold? AMC responds to all fans with marketing material that is practical to their niche with interactive games and videos to keep fans engaged. What can you offer your readers to keep them communicating with you?

Everything Is Not As It Seems

Rick and his crew have run into some dubious characters along the way and for some, they had to put a cap in them – for survival purposes of course.  In the opening scene for season 3, you see the characters going from house to house to find safe shelter. No matter how quiet it looked, there was always something lurking behind door number one.

Result: Not every website you read will be your end-all for content and information. Use your own head to create content that will grab users and be up front about the message you relate. Think of your own real-life situations when you write. How did you solve a common problem?

Relate that information to the people reading your blog. We all experience the same situations at some point, but in different ways. They can share their stories and offer more advice to everyone reading your blog. Acting like something you are not is stupid. It will rob you of your spirit, creativity and people won’t understand your message.

Remember The Small Wins

Even though they didn’t have much to celebrate running from people who want to eat them, they did have brief moments of clarity. When they spent time at Hershel’s farm, they were able to lay their head down and have meals with family. They respected that there will be times when they could relax, but they always had to stay vigilant. You never know what’s around the corner.

Result:  Celebrate the small wins, but don’t get cocky. If you get more comments on a post, celebrate.  Just because you got more eye’s it doesn’t mean you can sit back and relax. The work has just begun. Don’t be afraid to do the work necessary to succeed. Keep an eye on the big picture and figure out how you can turn a small win into the best experience.

Final Thoughts

We are always tested, challenged and pushed to the edge like bloggers wanting to abandon their blogs or a small business owner ready to close shop. We should-be so lucky that our lives aren’t as challenged as the characters on The Walking Dead, but we can use their experiences to strive for excellence in no matter what comes our way.

Creepy Right

So what did you think?  Are you a fan of The Walking Dead like Sonia is?  Okay, it was pretty creepy but she made some fabulous comparisons that you must admit were pretty darn good.

Now come on, you can tell us what you thought and I do know that I really enjoy when I can take something in my everyday life and compare that to what we’re doing online.  TV shows are the best way to do that too even if they are creepy.

Love you hear your thoughts on what Sonia shared and she’ll be by to reply to your comments too. Please be sure to share this now with your friends.  Hey, they just might be a big fan too!

Nice to see you Sonia at Adrienne’s blog. :)

Wow! That sure was creepy! I’m another one who loves horror movies, though get to see few of them nowadays. I haven’t seen the show on television as we don’t get it our end, but I’ve seen the movie – The Walking Dead long back, and the other horror movies, so I can relate to what you said.

Your tips are apt here, and yes, building your audience, having an element of surprise, communication and the other things you mentioned are the key. I liked your point about celebrate your small wins, and the final thoughts about taking cues and experiences from the smallest of things that come our way – just like this TV show that can teach us so much in return.

Thanks for sharing these tips with all of us. Have a wonderful week ahead, Adrienne and Sonia. :)

Hi Harleena! I know very creepy indeed. I thought I would mix it up a bit and shake some feathers (ha ha!). I watched it last night and again it taught me something else…so many surprises and changes to way we think. Celebrating the small wins is hard for some people to even see. They might not think more traffic is a big deal even it 50 more people saw it if they are too busy comparing themselves to someone else.

When I started blogging I didn’t know what the hell I was doing and it took time, but every time something different happened I celebrated. It is what kept me going and why I still blog today. Thank you Harleena for your cool comment and I hope you get to watch someday. Again, sorry if I ruined it for you!

I appreciate you stopping by today Harleena and sharing this with Sonia and I.

What a fun, entertaining, and useful guest post, Adrienne! I love it! (I’m a huge fan of zombie tales and, of course, The Walking Dead.)

I’m surprised how well some of the stories and marketing from The Walking Dead apply to business but now that Sonia has summarized it for us, I can certainly see it’s true!

I’d say The Walking Dead has even more gems of wisdom to reflect on and teach online entrepreneurs how to survive, and hopefully thrive.

For example, this is your life, and your blog, so don’t forget to have fun with it! I’m thinking of Glenn, here, he always manages to kick ass and make surviving the zombie apocalypse look like fun, even when he’s in horrifying situations. Glenn doesn’t take himself too seriously and isn’t afraid to take risks.

Thanks for sharing this unique perspective on blogging. Next up, what Dexter can teach us about writing a killer blog! ;)

Have a grateful day!

Hi Chrysta! You know they focused so much on Glenn last night. What I like about his character and all of them actually, is how much they have all grown from being scared to doing what it takes to survive. I think we do that with our businesses, blogs and other ventures we decide to take a chance on. Glenn was this scared young man who wasn’t afraid to do what it takes to survive, but now his character is much more stronger and pissed. I think he had to get mad to get good.

Maybe that happens for other entrepreneurs when they reach a point and say enough is enough and just go for it. I just hope they don’t kill his character off. Good to see another fan of the show here. I was hoping people knew what I was talking about. Ha ha! Thanks Chrysta for your awesome comment.

You and Sonia could have a field day over this one Chrysta. You ladies can write a whole series around this show it sounds like. I’ve never seen it so I was lost, I admit. That’s okay everyone seems to be relating so see!

Thank you Chrysta for sharing that with us today.

Have a fabulous week.

What an entertaining way to do a blog post Sonia! I’m not a big fan like Adrienne but I know so many people who ARE and post on FB and Twitter about when the next show is, etc. Many LOVE it.
Have a team or community is important. We can not just blog it alone and get readers. That was something I did not know when I first started.
I never thought about element of surprise. Interesting point. Others would say to announce your next post so they come back to see it. Not sure which way works best. Something to try. I guess I don’t do that often so I’m more of a surprise blogger :)
I find my target is getting easier to understand. I can sometimes tell by the amount of comments on a post or shares on one. That gives me indications for future ones.
Celebrate the small wins is a good tip – it can keep a person going and be better able to deal wih small loss too.
Everyday is a new day, one day a win – another day not such a day.
I know a lot of bloggers that will love this as they do the Walking Dead Sonia :) Nice to see you back blogging too.

Hi Lisa, you had allot to do with why I still blog. I remember when I started that I wanted to stop after trying 3 times with other unsuccessful blogs. You kept coming back to comment and I knew I was on to something. Then another comment and another till I too started to see what was working and what wasn’t.

Now the element of surprise I think, helps to keep your blog fresh with a different outlook. We all talk about the same subjects to some degree and I try and mix it up when I can to focus on how I solved a common problem for myself and help someone else. I found those posts to be my most successful and got tons of shares. Why I forget that sometimes is where I need to slap myself on the head, but I am learning. I think it takes to learn how to really focus on the small stuff because that ends up being our big win.

Thanks my friend for your comment, support and friendship.

Creepy but spot on right! I was surprised that Harleena and Chrysta are big fans of The Walking Dead too! See, I would have never guessed but I didn’t know Sonia was into that either. I love learning this about these ladies so comparing this show to blogging was brilliant.

Thank you for sharing this with us today. You can definitely announce the next post but create an element of surprise by not giving away what the post is about. Give them enough curiosity so that they’ll want to stop by to check that out. ;-)

Thanks Lisa for your comment and you enjoy your week.

This blog post is certainly a surprise to your fans, Adrienne. I don’t think you’ve ever had a post about Zombies before. But the lessons from Walking Dead certainly fit for blogging.

Okay, I will try to band with my fellow bloggers and fight off the zombies at The Wonder of Tech!

It’s not that I don’t enjoy scary movies because I do but the ones that are blood and gore, not exactly what I look forward to. Have never seen any of the Friday the 13th shows, never seen the Walking Dead. I’m more into mysteries and stuff like that.

I had to really think how it made me feel about life and how I could relate that message to blogging or just survival itself – in a blogging sense.

I love what you said about banding your fellow bloggers together to fight zombies off The Wonder of Tech and that was brilliant. Blogs that come together to support one another are the most successful. That is the beauty of networking at its best. Thanks Carolyn for your comment. I was laughing!

Very Interesting and informative guest post Adrienne and Sonia,
Its a also fun having you over here Sonia to share with us. I like that.

I haven’t watched the walking dead before as I’m not that good in watching movies, but from this post, I’m beginning to like it and will check out for the DVD.

I like all you said but one thing i want to talk about is the issue of lying, just like you said, it will only lead to mistrust and probably lead you into a great trouble. One question i always ask myself is….. What will happen if i tell my readers the truth? Knowing that it will only create trust and better relationship, why then do i have to lie?

I can’t agree more on this post Sonia. Really fun and educative.

@ Sonia,Thanks for sharing.
@Adrienne, thanks for allowing Sonia to interact with us via this wonderful post.

Hi Theodore, I appreciate your comments and I love that you got the message I was trying to convey. The reason why I mentioned mistrust with blogging is because I have seen it happen over and over again. Some bloggers get the wrong impression when they try and be like another blogger and end up with the wrong impression on their own blog.

If you are new, say it because there are tons of other people out there that are the same. People will get you and what you are trying to create. Plus I love seeing new bloggers build something new. They are learning and I learn allot from them too. Thank you so much for your comment and kind words.

“Just because you got more eye’s it doesn’t mean you can sit back and relax. The work has just begun.” True that! I’ve seen many bloggers who start ignoring the readers once they gain readership and following, which isn’t good. After all, they’re readers and they bring us money, fame and whatsoever concerned.

Hi Koundeenya. When I saw the ending of the last season, it surprised me so much that I had to offer that scenario. Sometimes the same regurgitated content gets old and people just tune out. I love seeing content that makes me think and how it relates to every day real-life.

People want to be challenged, surprised, and see something fresh and new. I can’t say I am perfect with my content, but I do try and change it up. I really appreciate your comments and how it relates to what you are trying to create with your content. Thanks again!

HI Adrienne and Sonia, I see your connections to marketing when I watch too!

I am a fan of the show. I notice how the writers suck me in and keep me thinking about the characters even when I am not watching. This season, I became so annoyed with the story line (whaaat? shocking, I know) I tried to stop watching… left it for a time, but still was wondering… what is going on on that show?

They do a great job of loving what they love so to speak – and not worrying about catering to everybody.

Thanks!

What I like most about this show is that they always restart the series over from day one so you can catch up on what you may have missed. Great to see you here Sonia and great post and analogy.

Even though I don’t know this show at all because my time for TV is very limited anyway, I could really follow on the point that you’re making in comparing the show to blogging and building online relationships.

I think that we should always strive for excellence and try to be better and better. For example, I can say that I’m not trying to be the best, because I’m not trying to compare myself to anyone, but I’m striving to be better and better at what I do.

When I finally got back to basics and started writing to help others not go through what I did, it made more sense. I admit I’m a fan of anything creepy! I haven’t been able to catch up on this show but it’s on my list. I always hear how good it is and now you made it even better, Sonia, by coming up with all these cool business lessons. You definitely made some really interesting connections, and all true! I especially like the part about keeping it interesting. That can help keep people’s attention and coming back for more. It’s too easy to fall into a rut and just keep doing things that you’re familiar with. Sometimes we find something that works and just stick with it. And even though it’s good to do what works, sometimes you have to switch things up and try something new. You never know what you might discover!

I enjoyed this spin on lessons and I hope both of you lovely ladies have a great week!

Anyway, brilliant brilliant analogies you drew between the plot and the show with online marketing and websites.

Hi Annie! LOL! That is great. I wish you all still lived here and we could have Walking Dead parties. I can’t believe what a cult following that show has. I am completely hooked and watch it over and over again. Even when they start it over from Season 1, I still watch it. How crazy is that? No matter, it made me wonder how to relate it to blogging and my man through in some pointers too. I can’t all the credit. This post was so fun to write. How is everyone doing?

As a blogger and a fan of “The Walking Dead” all I can say about this post: creative! Very cool tying in blogging and pop culture. No wonder why this post has this many comments already. I love the part about counting the small victories. That’s very true. We all have to start somewhere and a win is a win regardless. Last night’s episode of “The Walking Dead” was intense. Can’t wait until next Sunday! Tweeting and pinning this post.

Hi John, don’t you just love that show? I love how they replay the entire season so new fans can catch up. Not many shows do that and they market it very smart. I always hate being late to the game and with that show, they make it so easy to stay tuned. Thank you so much for your kind comments and support for this post. It is my first time here at Adrienne’s site and I am super thrilled.

Hi Sonia and Adrienne,

Wonderful marketing tips here for any blogger. I love how you compared Walking Dead with blogging – brillant! These are great reminders for anyone. Building and keeping relationships is so important and what I strive to keep in the forefront. I also like “Celebrate the small wins, but don’t get cocky.” I feel like I have a small win right now, but your point is well taken – the work has just begun.

Hi Ms Cathy! Celebrating the small wins was a lesson-learned for me. When I started I was clueless. I can build a site that looked good, but once it was all built, I ran out juice. Once I finally turned things around with my current site, I celebrated small milestones for myself and continue to do that till this day. I think we can always celebrate the small wins no matter what they are. It could be more tweets or just reading that people got what your point and got enjoyment from it. Thank you so much for your cool comment and support. I really appreciate that.

I loved all the points but I liked the most where you wrote about the Aim for the right target. marketing doesn’t mean to do anywhere. anyone can do that but the right marketing strategy is to find out the right people who might have interest in your products or services. Atish, you are so right. Finding your target is not as easy as some people think. Some bloggers can hone in very easily and decipher who their audience is, while others miss the small clues, of what readers really want. How they respond to your posts? What was different about it? How can you replicate that? I think that is why I liked the “Element of Surprise” so much too. You can’t get comfortable when you think you are at the top. Once there you have to keep the momentum going and some end up burnt out.

I think about sites like CopyBlogger and Adrienne’s site understand that and deliver. You can’t get better than that, but it is also a great learning tool to hone your own craft and run with it. Thank you Atish for your comment and support here. I really appreciate that.

I am not a fan of horror at all but I can see the comparison you have made to blogging Sonia, I loved this post!
I think building those relationships are so important, without our readers we would not could not survive so they should be treated with respect and make them our “friends”.
I sometimes give a little taste of what my next post will be but most of the time I like it to be a surprise, not sure which works the best, one thing I will have to check out so thanks for the reminder :)

I am glad I got to meet you on the group and the way we all help one another. I am still surprised to see some people not get that and thenwonder why they haven’t achieved the success they wanted without their friends. We all need one another and the community is where its at. Hi Sonia and Adrienne

Don’t like creepy shows or things that go bump in the night! But the comparisons are very good.

TV can be a great inspiration for content, just as real life can and many times the combination can be the trigger that blends it all together.

I like the statement “Celebrate the small wins”. We all start with small wins and that is what gives us the juice to proceed. Without some glimmer of hope I think eventually we would all pack it in and give up.

It is a constant search for something to write about or shall I say translating life into an actual post. Something that we probably never considered until we saw the blank screen staring us back in the face. We soon realized it was not going to materialize in front of us unless we started thinking like a writer. We may have had all these great thought provoking posts lurking in our brains for maybe the first ten and then realized we were tapped out unless we started digging deeper. Now all my experiences are, how can I make this into a post or how does this even provide anything of value.

Lots of good ideas today.

I know that at times I also have a difficulty bringing the real life stuff into my posts as comparisons but I have my moments. I think the more we blog though, the easier it becomes.

Thank you for your comment Mary and always a pleasure to see you. Enjoy your week.

Hi Ms Mary! I love how you mentioned “hope”. Such a small word, with so much meaning. Celebrating small wins in adversity is difficult for even me sometimes. There are times when I have to think about the big picture and how far I have become to see where I am now. Where for new bloggers, they might not recognize conquering their biggest fears.

We all want to get our message out there, but staying grounded helps to never forget where you started and where you could end up when we take things for granted. Thank you Mary for your thoughtful comment and support. I really appreciate that.

Hi Sonia,

Creepy indeed ;) I’ve noticed couple of friends sharing about this TV show, but never seen it though. The name itself convey it’s about zombies. To be honest, I’m not much fond of zombies when it comes to horror movies, but depends on the story though. Seems quite actions in there ;)

Well, I’ve been struggling with names, so had to search Google to find who’s who :D lol…

Now I feel it’s more about you being creative Sonia ;) I do love analogies, examples and comparisons as they make us feel better even about something we don’t know.

The networking is most important and I think many bloggers do know the importance of valuable connections online by now. Sadly still there are folks and you know, even some public figures (Marketing Ninja, SEO Zombies) talking about getting traffic instead of building a supportive community. People have been taught that way and this is a good advice. Adrienne always mentioning about this :)

Targeting audience and communication are two factors I see that bloggers are struggling with. Sometimes blog description says “All about blogging” but sharing about advertising only. You have made the point that monitoring our audience will always help us what they are desperately seeking for.

“Everything Is Not As It Seems” ~ I don’t wanna talk about it ’cause you proved it through this post itself Sonia ;) Bloggers are creatives. The turn words into masterpieces.

Lisa once shared a fact that average blogging period for bloggers is 6 years. It makes me really think about people blogging such a long period and abandoning. It is surprising. Well, compared to that we are still baby bloggers ;)

Have a fabulous week, Sonia and Adrienne :)

Cheers…

Hi Mayura. Awesome comment! You touched on so many points, I don’t know where to begin, but I love how you mentioned that some sites focus on one “agenda” and don’t bother to build their community. People want to be heard and know that their opinion matters.

I saw a blogger once respond to a comment that turned so many readers off that eventually the blog disappeared 2 years ago. They had a great blog when I started following it, being a newbie myself, but what I didn’t like is their no-it-all attitude and it soon turned me off. Why do people do that? My philosophy: help others period. Thanks Mayura for your support and comment my friend.

Great post Sonia. I’m don’t watch “The Walking Dead” but I like the analogy you used with the show. It’s definitely important to come real when you write your blog posts because one day, I believe you’re going to have to back it up.

More than likely the trials and tribulations you went through or are going through are the same as your readers. This is a great way to connect with them. Once they see how real you are with them, the stronger connection you will have with them. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Sherman! I know what you mean when you said, ” to come real when you write a post”. That was even hard for me. I was pretty straight-forward, but being so new in the beginning made me wonder, “am I offending anyone or should I even say that?” It took a while to get over that hump, but I am in a better place where I have to just be me. You can’t please everyone and there is always going to be a “debbie-downer” in the group. You either acknowledge it or keep it moving. I’d rather keep it movin and do my own thing. However, Sonia, I like your analogies. In this business, we more or less get to pick our team. I like that. Mind you, we have to grow our team, but if we communicate as you said, we will find like minded people in our own niche that potentially will grow our team. I also like how you talk about the element of surprise. It’s almost like we’re novelists, right? Like we’re writing our own mini-series. Hi Adrienne! Thanks for having Sonia as your guest blogger. I am a fan of her blog!

Sonia,
I love the way you used that TV show as an analogy to blogging. I’ve watched that show a few times and know that there is a whole cult of people tweeting about it and waiting for the next show. What a committed audience the “Walking Dead” has!

It is so true that we, as bloggers have to emulate certain methods. As you mentioned, we can’t build a business without an audience. So how do we attain that readership? Well, your suggestion of the “element of surprise” – keeping them on the edge of their seats is a great method. I find this when I’m reading blogs that have Parts to it. It raises so many questions in your head like…what is she going to show me next? I like when sometimes we do a series of blogs about one subject for that reason.

We do have to know what our target audience is and communication is the key to everything in this business. No matter how we are marketing, the social aspect of communication is the strongest of all in my opinion.

When you mentioned to celebrate those small wins- I concur! Whenever I have a “small win” after my first reaction of going into a happy dance, I do something to celebrate it. To me it is reinforcing myself to build upon each level.

Thanks Sonia for a wonderful and entertaining post,
Donna

Hi Donna! You know I learned the “Element of surprise” from Jason. When he wrote a few guest posts for me, it was so different and scary all at the same time, but what an impact his posts made. It taught me that people want to see people change it up, be themself and just have a little fun. That is not to say that everyone will take to each post, but at least it doesn’t sound like the same stuff we read all the time. Now, it is not to say that different perspectives don’t matter, because they do, but I appreciate seeing some personality in a post too. Thanks Donna for your awesome comment and support as always.

Hi Corina! Nice to meeet you too. Celebrating the small wins is crucial to anyone’s success, but I added that to the post because I think it keeps people going. When you celebrate small “milestones” it drives people to keep going versus missing the big picture: you didn’t give up.

I have a friend that finally got his scripts in front a real producer and no matter how much extra work they request from him, I stress that he focus on the big picture: someone is actually LOOKING at his work. How cool is that?

I wish you much success with your posts and celebrating the small wins too. Thank you so much for your comment and support on this post. I really appreciate that.

But the way you have compared the stuff with marketing and promotion is very much to the point and one can easily understand and get your point.

To remember and cherish the small wins is what I liked about your entire post, we should really give more thought to what we do and what it yields even though our aim is far higher. There is always something to relish and learn from every experience.

Hi there Sonia and Adrienne,

What a fun post – and what have I been missing?! I’ve never seen this show, but it sounds very similar to a great novel I read not long ago, The Passage.

I loved your comparisons and think this post is full of great lessons for any aspiring bloggers. I particularly like your closing points about celebrating small ‘wins’ and keeping your eye open for what might be around the next corner. Recognising each little achievement and being prepared for bumps in the road are both so important when it comes to maintaining your motivation and keeping your spirits high – otherwise it’s easy to get disheartened.

Thanks for a very entertaining and enlightening read!

Hi Sue! You have to keep on what is around the corner, because often too many times we are faced with surprises and then don’t know how to handle it. If life threw us a curve ball, how do we handle it? Do we run and hide or do we face it hand on and keep it movin? I don’t want to imagine having to deal with the problems they face in this post, but we have it so easy when all we have to do is keep our eyes open to opportunities right front of us. Hi Tonya,

Are you serious? Brad Pitt will be in a zombie movie! What has the world come to and where the heck have I been. Okay, I’m taping this show and I’m going to watch it now. At least the show has gotten some attention now because of Sonia’s post so let’s hope the lessons about blogging have done the same.

Thanks Tonya and always good to see you. Enjoy your week.

Hi Tonya! I saw that preview at the movies recently and I can’t wait to check it out. It seems like they are coming out with more stuff like that in lew of The Walking Dead. Maybe they were inspired, but I will see that movie nonetheless. AMC really knows how to tap into their audience, keep them guessing and let fans know they are having fun too.

For instance, last Sunday I guessed it right who was going to be killed off and that is what keeps me coming back. Same thing for blog posts, when I see posts that go in a completely different direction it sucks me in and keeps me glued to its content. It also makes me look closer at the person behind the blog and how their personality leaks over into the rest of their content. Thank you so much for your comment and I am so glad you enjoyed this piece. I had allot of fun writing it.

Hey Sonia, what an awesome guest post. I still remember the first episodes of The Walking Dead like it was yesterday. I couldn’t watch it anymore, it was too creepy for me. And, even though I love action movies and watch a lot of TV, I just couldn’t watch it :)

But, I understand why people are watching it and why the show has so many fans. I especially enjoyed the element of surprise, and combined with the creepy part, it was close to impossible for me to watch :)

One thing that you talk about is aiming for the right target, and that’s a very important part in marketing, and even though I just watched a few episodes, I understood that it was a very important part of the TV show as well.

Great post Sonia!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this topic Jens. From the storyteller himself and marketing genius.

Hi Jens! Did you catch that I linked back to your post in the last sentence of my post? I read one of your posts recently and it was perfect as the end result of this post. Regarding the show, yeah I understand that it is not for everyone. What I am surprised about is how much cable allows for viewers to see. Is it a bit much? Yes, but, I enjoy the “element of surprise” and the story-line itself. The images used in this post really helped me tell their story and relay it back into how it works for blogging. Thanks Jens for your comment my friend. How is the family doing?

I really enjoyed the show, and I have decided to give it another try. The only reason I stopped watching was that it was too scary :)

My family is doing great. My wife is still home with Kristian (he is 6 months now), and I will probably be home with him when she starts working again sometime in June.

Adrienne and Sonia,

I love the analogy used between the TV show and blogging. I don’t watch that show but I do not need to in order to understand. Sonia you did a fabulous job of creating a picture of what happened in the show using a few words.

Each one of your points is so valid and we really do need to focus on all of them as we blog and develop our website if we want to be successful.

Great captivating post.

Hi Dee Ann! It is so funny how many people don’t watch this show. Its like me never watching anything on channels 2-7 anymore like I use to. This show has me hooked like “Lost” did years ago for many others and believe it or not, I just finished watching that show too. I had never seen it and although it was all over the place, I found myself glued to the TV. If there is one thing I have learned from this post is to have fun and keep bits of me in it.

People love to see some personality and small bits of humor, if any, while still keeping it informative. I am so happy you got a kick out of this post, even if you don’t watch the show. You got the real message behind it and I can’t ask for more than that. Thanks Ms Dee Ann for your comment and support for this post. I really appreciate that.

HI Sonia, So nice to meet you on Adrienne’s blog! I am not much for TV And especially not a fan of “Zombies” The Walking Dead! But I did read this through and liked how you translated the story into the blogging aspect very cleverly. This sentence really did it for me “”No matter how quiet it looked, there was always something lurking behind door number one.”" You really never do know who will be the next one visiting your blog! Well I am interested in your interview with Adrienne so I am off to check out your blog and read this post. Thanks for sharing. Chery :)

I love all that stuff *except* and my kids will tell you ‘anything dead that gets up and starts, walking and eating, is *it* for me! Don’t want to see that stuff! Nightmares…ugh! Anyway, I did love, love, love this article. How creative to be able tor relate specifics to survival and business. I tell you I thought this was brilliant! So even though I’m not a fan of the show, I definitely got soooo much out of your info. Definitely a teaching story if I ever saw one…so now I can say I did learn something from a ‘zombie’ movie….uggggh!

LOL!!! I hear ya Barbara! I don’t mind scary movies and most of them don’t really scare me mainly because I “know” they’re not real. But eating people or cutting them up with a saw is not my idea of entertainment. Obviously I’m one of the few that think that because this series is popular.

I thought that how Sonia related this to blogging was brilliant. I mean this is what people find intriguing even if we don’t do creepy stuff. She definitely shared an awesome lesson for us all. Glad you enjoyed that part of it too.

The images used were very instrumental in telling the entire story, but its the true message behind the scenes that I am glad everyone focused on. Zombies are super creepy, but I love horror flicks. Nightmares, not anymore..the only movie that ever made me stay up all night was Aliens and Jurassic Park. Thanks Miss Barbara for your comment and support.

The last scene on Sunday pissed me off and I knew that last prisoner was going to bite the dust soon. He always seemed like he would be the next to kill off like his croonies anyway. Daryl and the crew is going to have some serious payback thankfully. My question is where is the black guy and his son from Season 1? They have never mentioned them anymore. Hi Sue, you know now that you mention, I look for subtle quotes that stick with me. I heard this the other day: “The way you say things, for example, sometimes those seeds turn into trees”, was said by an actor and it just set the tone for my next post. Or “Fifty percent of something is better than a hundred percent of nothing”.

Quotes like that always give me ideas of some meaning behind a particular subject. I might have to figure out and dig deeper in how it relates to marketing, but I usually figure it out or put it in draft for later. That was great question because I never thought about that. Thanks Sue!

Hey Sonia,

I must admit I have never watched the Walking Dead as sadly I know I will get caught up in the whole thing and not stop watching it until I have seem them all. Call this a downfall of mine, but I recall the days of the ’24′ series. I watched series 1 – 4 in week and kind of forgot that I had to do some work. So I now limit myself to watch only a few things on TV. However I will put it on the list of things to watch :-D

A very unusual and interesting post. Thanks for sharing.

I like the way you compare your blog and business to characters from the show, it’s a good way to take something away. This is something I have done many times in my business. Sometimes TV gives you that little bit of inspiration to do something or it gives you a great idea to work with.

What an interesting post, relating blogging to a popular TV show.

Here in the UK we don’t get that show – probably luckily or that would be more time out of my work schedule!

My favorite UK TV marketing is this one:
Compare the Market (I have NO association with them.)

It has the distinction that having started out looking for cheap insurance, I paid MORE so that I could get a “free” meerkat toy, and THEN spent weeks anxiously tracking the progress of my meerkat toy from Meerkova to his new home with ME!

Boy – I wish that team worked for me :-)

Hi Joy! I can’t believe they don’t get it over in the UK. This show is huge, but its available on Hulu I think. I am a huge fan of some old British comedy like “Are You Being Served and Keeping Up with Appearances”. I am sure I could derive something from that, but I don’t think people would know what I was talking about if I talked about Mrs. Slocumbe’s hair. Ha ha! But it would be fun. If you don’t have laser focused clarity about your target market, along with a very keen understanding of their needs or interests, you will fail.

As a major fan of The Walking Dead who found out about it prior to its start and watched it from the very beginning, let me say how much that I love this blog post, and the creativity used in writing it. I have read a similar blog post from a financial perspective and I loved that, too.

It is funny to me that so many people refer to this series as creepy, because it is really not. Yes, it is about zombies, but really, it is about the human story and survival. Even after watching numerous episodes, I did not realize until I heard it on TV that the title “The Walking Dead” does not refer to the zombies, but rather the humans in the story. I think this series presents a great deal of moral/ethical issues and really causes people to look at what type of person that they are.

I love how you took a great and popular show and used it to find applicable lessons to be used in blogging and marketing. Great job! And by the way, go Team Dixon! ;)

Hi J.L. and welcome to my blog. Glad you stopped by to read Sonia’s ever so interesting take on the Walking Dead and blogging.

I think creepy goes to mind for all of us who are not fans of zombies and I admit seeing some of the photos of the show just looks really creepy to me. Not a fan of yucky anyway but that’s okay, a lot of people sure are.

I appreciate your input on what Sonia shared and thank you for your comment. Hope you’re enjoying your week.

Hey girl! I thought there would be more fans too, but that is ok. Its like I couldn’t name one sitcom on regular TV because I don’t watch it ever, but I love stuff on AMC. To each their own, but I am so happy you liked the post and enjoyed the analogy I threw in there too. Team Dixon for sure and already ready for tomorrow’s post. Such a huge fan and glad to meet you! Thank you so much for taking the time to read this post.

Sonia,

Thanks for your response. Totally hear you and agree on sitcoms– hate ‘em. But AMC has some good shows, and I like most things horror-related, especially regarding zombies and vampires. I am known as The Walking Dead fanatic to my friends, so it is not uncommon for them to share something cool they see or hear about with me.

I knew your face looked familiar to me, and it was because I had already ‘Liked’ your page on FB. :)

Best of luck to you in the future. And enjoy tonight’s new episode– Sunday is always such a special evening around our household. ;)

Hello Adrienne and Sonia
Never thought I’d see the walking dead and marketing in the same sentence …but couldn’t agree more with the analogy! I love the reference to celebrate the small wins.. Unfortunately I have been guilty in the past of perhaps, celebrating a bit too much and becoming over complacent but this puts it into perspective. Hmmm now what season of walking dead am I watching his weekend :)

Thank you for sharing this with us and I agree. I would have never put these two together but that just goes to show you what I know right. Glad you got a lesson from this too. Oh and enjoy the show. Whichever one you watch.

Hi Kapil. I think we all do that in the beginning with complacency, but all you can do is learn from it and keep striving forward. There is nothing saying you can’t be proud for accomplishing small defeats with yourself because we all deserve a pat on the back, but you have to stay vigilant of what could happen next. The season on now I think is season 3 is on right, but if you wait till the end of the season, they always start it all over again from Season 1 before the next season so you get caught up.Thanks Kapil for your comment and taking the time to read my post.

Dang, it’s been a while since I”ve watched The Walking Dead but this post makes me want to jump back into it when I have some free time.

But more importantly, what you said about building your team – mainly, your audience, is absolutely essential. This is something I neglected to understand when I started getting involved in online marketing many years ago. Now, it’s exciting because I know I’m moving in the right direction.

What did you do to grow your audience?

Hi Jeff,

Welcome to my blog and I’m thrilled that you happened to visit this particular post. Especially if you at some time enjoyed watching The Walking Dead. I love how Sonia compared it to blogging even if it is super creepy!

I’ll let her answer your question for you since this is her gem.

I appreciate your comment and thank you for your visit.

Hey Jeff, I joined a group on Facebook and it went from there. In the beginning it was just “me” and I couldn’t get anywhere. I networked with a few people and groups, but their topics were nothing that interested me and I had to be with child to “fit” in.

Once I joined another group on Facebook, it took off. There, I was able to meet with other like-minded bloggers and marketers that helped each other and paved the way for us all to succeed. You still have to do the hard work, but having a team behind you is a huge help. Shoot me an email and I can tell you more. Thanks Jeff for taking the time to read my post.

Hi Sonia and Adrienne

I’ve never watched The Walking Dead and to be honest I had to just go and check whether we get it in the UK. We do, so maybe I’ll check it out.

I love the comparisons you made and they made a lot of sense to me. I especially like relating things to real life. I think that’s the best way to stand out from other people.

Hey Tim,

So they do have it in the UK! Apparently you don’t mind zombies and stuff. I’m not into it but Sonia has me curious so I will be at least watching one episode just to see what all the fuss is about. At least now I know some characters.

Glad you enjoyed her comparison, pretty clever right! ;-)

Hi Tim, thank you. I wanted to create a post that was not only different (most here say creepy), but still have some meaning with blogging. The images I have to admit did the story telling even though I am huge fan. I just thought about how we do things, the decisions we make and how we always can use an extra pair of hands for help. Whether it is blogging or reaching your goals, you can’t always do it alone. Thanks Tim for your comment.

Hi Sonia,

I am not a fan of any shows about zombies, vampires, or fantasy. I have not seen The Walking Dead, so I really cannot have an opinion about it. However, using the parallelism with obviously one of your favorite television shows, The Walking Dead and blogging is brilliant. As you pointed out, there are many lessons to be learned in the show. My favorite of the six relating to marketing and blogging is Aim for The Right Target. I was in a crazy loop for awhile until I grasped the concept of a targeted audience. It is vital in any type of marketing, otherwise it’s a huge waste of time, effort and money “trying to convince or persuade” people who are not in your target niche. The biggest mistake you can make is being too general in hopes of reaching more people. It works much better to target those people who are really interested in your offer and are seeking a solution to a problem they have. It’s a win win when that happens.

I recently did a comparison of Hell’s Kitchen and internet marketing. Some people had not watched it either, but it too has lessons. I had a lot of fun writing it and sharing the comparison between the show and internet marketing. You did a great job! Thanks!

Hi Raena,

I remember your Hell’s Kitchen post and this one is similar. A year or so ago I did one with The Biggest Loser so being able to relate a popular show to blogging or what we do online I think just makes things pretty interesting.

There are several people who aren’t really into the creepy shows, me included, but it does peak curiosity wouldn’t you agree!

Thanks for your comment, always a pleasure to see you.

Hi Raena! No worries on not being a fan. Horror shows just aren’t for everyone, but I love that you got the analogy behind it. Everyone saw past the creepiness and focused on the points I was trying to make. I had allot of fun with this post and the images really did the story-telling for me.

In regards to a targeted audience, that was the most difficult for me too in the beginning. I didn’t know what the hell I was doing and eventually ended up lost and closed one blog after another. When I created my current blog, I was determined to find my niche and what drove me to talk directly to the right audience. Thank you Raena for taking the time to read my post. I really appreciate that.

Sonia, very creative and well written post! I like the “element of surprise” part. Being predictable means being boring. No one likes a boring read. I think the most important point I’m getting here is that I should mix it up on my new website (in the design stage right now). I prefer to read but my readers might like a video now and then. I’ve done 5 or 6 videos and surprisingly I enjoyed making them. I think I should do more. BTW – my husband and I watch the walking dead at my sister’s house. She saves up episodes for us and we just have a marathon viewing while eating bbq and drinking wine. It’s fun!

Hi Suzanne, you hit it on the nail. You have to change it up and I was so guilty of that in the beginning. I was either too scared to try this or that and now I know you have to do different things to keep your audience interested. I like having tutorials and really get into detail with images with direction so readers can walk away and know how to do something. Or talk about how I solved a common problem because I know I am not the only one. I just started dabbling with more videos and I love those too. I love that you are watching the show…Team Dixon! Thanks Suzanne!

Hi Sonia and Adrienne,

Excellent post! Very creative way of making your points. I love it!

I agree with all of the points you made. You have to remember who you audience is and then communicate with them in ways that engage them and keep them coming back.

Your business will be stunted, but would probably survive if you missed the mark on one of these tips, but if start missing more than one, you’re dead in the water.

Thanks for sharing, both of you. Now I’m off to check out Sonia’s blog!

I hope you have a great end to the week!

Hi Barry! Communication was never a problem for me, but how to talk to them was. When I started I didn’t really know what it was to blog. It was more like a journal and I didn’t have any plans to take it much further since I had already failed at 2 other blogs. Once I got going with my current blog, I had practice on what not to do and I knew that I needed to build a community and network with more like-minded bloggers that understood my nice. Thanks Barry for reading and taking the time to check out my crazy post.

Sonia,
Thanks for the wonderful article and greatly narrated. Indeed, I am a movie admirer, But not a great fan of horror flicks or Horror TV series since it agitates at mind for lot many days. :)
But I like the way you could correlate the subjects with Marketing strategy and really great.

I would like to say, at any business when we draw our base line, Marketing strategy should be our first target goal. This goes for corporate or small business. Example, We all know HTC and Nokia are great products on mobile ground, But when it comes to business they clearly missed out to pave their path for clear Marketing strategy. Also for today’s world just the passion is not the only fuel to drive to reach our target. Creativity is the main key which could easily distinguish you from others when you apply it on right direction. This could express by communication, help, your postings, comments and knowledge sharing. I believe you have nailed it exactly that, Celebrate every small win but the victory is not to sit and relax. Absolutely! At every win, You are just paving a right path to reach your destination. But still miles to go!. On your journey, You may need to walk, run and fly as and when needed. Your passion and experience will take care the rest to reach out the big picture.

Thanks for sharing the great article Sonia.

Hi Manickam, You are so right with Nokia. I had a friend work there years ago and they never got that they had to really market their phones to the masses to reach the right audience. I am surprised they are still in business, as with Blackberry. I didn’t have a marketing strategy when I first started and it took me forever to get things going, but I read allot of blogs and learned from some great bloggers over time. Thanks for your awesome comment and taking the time to read my post. I really appreciate that.

Hi Sonia,

I am also a big fan of Walking dead series and it is quite innovative for you to combine the series and marketing.
I was particularly moved when they discovered the girl in the barn. There are many zombie movies that give you a shock by someone coming up suddenly and scaring you. But this episode gave the twist that was unexpected yet horrific. It was violent without being gory at all.
I really like the way the people in there get together as team when they have a crisis and look out for each other. Teams need to be like that. Sure there will be a loner out there but then a good team sticks together in the end.
I hope the new series bring more surprises and you bring out another one of the article based on them :)

ASH! My good friend. I knew why I always liked you. I didn’t know you were a big fan of the Walking Dead too! I think what has me stuck to this show is the fact that they keep you on your toes and they use the “Element of Surprise” quite often. The secrecy around the show reminds me of that show,” Lost” and the craze behind that.

I never watched it at that time, but being that I just finished watching that I can see why. It is funny how anything can teach us something about the way we market ourselves and how it can relate to blogging. Thanks Ash for stopping by to read my creepy post and as always your support.
