How many of you are or have been part of a mastermind group?
What did you think? Did you benefit from being a part of a group? Did you make some awesome connections? Did you receive some terrific advice?
Okay, for those who are not familiar with what a mastermind group is let me explain real quick before I dive into why you should definitely be a part of one.
Mastermind groups offer a combination of brainstorming, education, accountability and support in a group setting to sharpen your business and/or personal skills. A mastermind group helps you and the group members achieve success.
The group members challenge each other to set important goals. It consists of commitment, confidentiality, willingness to be creative and help with brainstorming of ideas and possible solutions. They support each other with total honesty, respect and compassion. Mastermind group members act as catalysts for growth, devil’s advocates and supportive colleagues. This is the essence and value of being part of a mastermind group.
Pretty cool huh!
You Can’t Go It Alone
No matter how hard you try, you cannot build your business alone. Trust me, I’ve tried.
Now mastermind groups aren’t the same thing as purchasing courses to learn a new skill or joining training communities so you’ll have the support of others. The main focus of a mastermind group is the brainstorming and accountability support among the group members.
It’s also not about coaching individuals in a group setting. This is a place where you can get everyone’s feedback, advice and support.
Now although you can share leads and resources with each other, it’s not the main focus of the meetings. The good news about these groups are that through your connections with other members, you may find plenty of joint venture opportunities, lead sharing and professional networking.
The Benefits Of A Mastermind Group
I have had the pleasure of being in four different mastermind groups over the past two years. I’m currently active in three at the moment but I will confess that I do have my favorite (wink, wink).
I have truly benefited from our meetings because this is where you can share ideas and get feedback on things you may need assistance with. They have helped me with brainstorming new possibilities and are holding me accountable so that I can remain focused with staying on the right track.
I have a community of very supportive colleagues who have ideas about things I would have never thought of. They are helping me reach new heights.
The groups can be as large as you want but you also want them small enough so that you can get everything done say within an hour’s time. We all know how precious our time is right.
Having say five or six people who have different strengths is the best way to organize a group. That way what I don’t know, others will and what they don’t know I will.
How To Organize A Group
Our groups meet on Google Hangout once a week. If you are looking for accountability, support and a group to brainstorm with then you should definitely consider organizing your own mastermind group.
Choose a few of your friends or colleagues and just ask them if they would be interested in forming a group with you. Make sure you get enough people with different strengths so that it will benefit the entire group.
Since we are able to connect with people from all over the world you’ll need to keep in mind the different time zones people are on so that may be an issue when forming your own group.
Remember, this is not about teaching each other new skills but helping each other stay accountable for the goals you’ve set for yourself. Or perhaps you need some direction with the next step to take but have exhausted all of your ideas. Maybe some of your colleagues see your strengths in another area they can suggest that you haven’t thought about.
New Heights For The New Year
If you’ve never been in a mastermind group before I highly recommend you start now. If you’ve been in some in the past but aren’t in any right now, take the initiative and start your own.
I know how much it’s benefited me being a part of several different groups and I know that it can take you to new heights this year as well.
So get started today and start thinking about some people you’d love to have in a mastermind group and contact them either view email, Skype, Google Hangout or any of the other social networking sites.
Trust me, if you’re looking to take your business to the next level joining a mastermind group is the direction you need to go.
Looking forward to hearing your comments and how much these groups have benefited you in the past as well. If you’d like to share some of your experiences with me I’d love to hear them.
Please be sure to share this post with your friends too. Hey, it might spark a new idea for them as well. ;-)

Hi Adrienne,
Ever since I started internet marketing, I didn’t like the idea of doing it alone, so I naturally joined groups of people for support. Within one month, my group started a mastermind group and I have been a member ever since.
The original idea of masterminding came from Dale Carnegie, which was later defined in Napoleon Hill’s book, Think and Grow Rich. The definition of a mastermind group is “coordination of knowledge and effort, in a spirit of harmony, between two or more people, for the attainment of a definite purpose.”
Ever since his book, people have formed mastermind groups for the reasons you suggested such as support, camaraderie, ideas, inspiration, support, and creativity.
At the present time I am in two Mastermind groups, one is my long time program and the other is a recent smaller group which I favorite. I love Napoleon Hill’s concepts and after reading his chapter on Mastermind Groups, you might think nothing is possible without one!
I love masterminding. We learn new ideas, share ideas, share resources, support each other and enjoy our each other’s company.
I would encourage anyone who is doing it alone, to find a group you can join. A mastermind groups can be as little as 2 people to many. I prefer smaller groups because it gives each other a chance to bond and get to know each other. Your productivity can become tenfold and you have more possibilities for accomplishing so much more in your business. Thanks Adrienne!

OMG, look who showed up first thing this morning! Whoop, whoop!!! You go girl.
Okay sorry, I’ll settle down now Raena.. lol…
Wow, that’s impressive. I’ve always been a loner and had to learn things on my own. I’ve never before coming online learned in any type of group setting. Long story, it’s just my work experience background. They kept me pretty isolated.
I checked out all those definitions starting from way back when but thought I’d take the easier route of explanation here. But you’re right, the idea started WAY back when. Thank goodness right!
That’s great that your original one is still going strong. I was in one a few years back but it disbanded mostly because everyone got so busy and just didn’t have the time to meet anymore. They were awesome though and I miss them all.
You are right Raena, it can be as little as just two people. I can vouch for that and I’m sure my other mastermind colleague will drop by to comment on this post because she and I have been doing it together for awhile now.
Thank you for your comment Raena and I hope that anyone who has never had this experience will be sure to join one or start their own after reading this.
Rock on my friend and thank you for your comment.

Hey Adrienne,
I am also part of a mastermind group with some pretty cool guys. I would say I was the least experienced in marketing of the whole group, but this suits me just fine because I learn soo much. I do offer input in other areas so I do pay for my knowledge
There is a saying that “if you are the most intelligent person in the room, you are in the wrong room” My group is perfect for me.
We use Voxer and skype
Thanks Adrienne, great info for people to take onboard and take action with.

Heck Yeah i’ve been part of a mastermind group. i’ve been part of several but most didn’t work out except the current one i’m in now. We’ve been together for over a year now and it’s A-M-A-Z-I-N-G.
We are all from different niches and we all have different levels of expertise or specialities which i think is great because one persons weakness is another persons strenght and we help each other with our skills.
I think the key to a mastermind group is finding good chemistry, finding others who bring something different to the table.
it also helps if everyone is someone at the same level. If one person is too advanced than the others than that person will not get as much out of the group. Also, i think it’s a good idea to find the right rhythm of meeting times.
All in all, i cannot say enough good things about mastermind groups. It’s like having your own board members or your own set of consultants only you don’t pay them and you help other people at the same time.

Hey Annie,
I know you’ve been a part of a couple in the past. That’s awesome that you’re a part of one that is still going strong. They are very fortunate to have you.
You said that perfectly. It’s best to all come from different backgrounds so that you can help and support each other in the areas they may be lacking. Sounds like a wonderful group.
You hit the nail on the head there which is why it’s great to go out and find the people you want to be a part of a group. When you get someone with no personality it can really put a damper on the entire vibe of the group.
You are so right, when everyone isn’t on the same level then that pulls everyone else down. The meeting times are important too so when you have people on the other side of the world you don’t want this to be a huge inconvenient for them. This should be a very enjoyable experience.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us. We can all learn from you too girl.

Sounds interesting Adrienne!
I have heard about mastermind groups and have a few friends who are part of such groups too, though never knew the details about it till I read your post.
I guess it does make sense to be a part of such a group or form your own group for sharing ideas and just being there for each other – even if it’s not just for business. Yes, besides the learning or teaching part that most of us can do from anywhere, it’s the support we can give each other that can also help us stay accountable for the goals we’ve set for ourselves. And just as you mentioned, such groups can help us with ideas if we have exhausted all of ours or if need help in a any particular area, or they the friends in our group can help us see more of ourselves that we haven’t noticed earlier. I think there are all the plus points of being in such a group.
Even being a part of a Google Community that’s recently started can turn to be a good group of such friend’s that are always there for each other – isn’t it?
Thanks for sharing this with us and making us think more on this line Adrienne
Always nice to learn new things from you.

Hi Harleena,
Ah, so you’ve never been a part of one!
Absolutely, you can create your group for any type of reason. It doesn’t necessarily have to be business but having that support in that area can be crucial. It can really help with being accountable for what you say you’re going to do. Knowing that you have a group of people who believe in you and are there to support you can be the turning point for everyone.
You are right, meeting people in communities like Google’s new one can be the start of a great friendship. Take that friendship and form a mastermind group and now you have the close support of some really awesome people.
Thank you Harleena for sharing that with me. If and when you decide this might be something you’d like to do then you at least know a little more about their benefits.

I am in several groups through business challenges and product Master Mind groups but I’m not in an exclusive Master Mind like the one you are describing. It sounds great! Even in the types of groups I’m in at present, it has opened up a whole new world online for me.

In strict accordance to the definition of a mastermind group, I haven’t been in any.
However, I’ve had casual interactions a lot with my blogging friends in my niche and they have helped me with their unique advise and support and I too have been helpful to them.
With my ebook plans gaining momentum everyday, I definitely have to be in one ASAP and that’ll give me better ideas and refine my writing.
And of course I must thank you for the inspiration you give by the way you approach blogging – flawless I’d say. Your relationship marketing tips are far out and you pretty well know that you’ve been pivotal in me making more and more blogging friends. So, I hope some of them will want to join my mastermind group.
Thank you so much for letting me know about this, I’ve never come across this but so glad that I did and it couldn’t have come at a better time.
Thanks again! Have a great day!

Hi Adrienne, Mastermind groups sound fantastic! I really like the concept because of the power in numbers. You’re right, people with different skill sets would be the best fit for a group. Like-minded people would probably just agree on everything and what good would that be?
I also like the social aspect. Google Hangouts are a wonderful social outlet to get people together and can be very productive in getting things done.
Thanks for letting us know about mastermind groups, Adrienne. Your groups are very lucky to have you as a member, with both your skill sets and your social talents!

Hi Carolyn,
They are really great Carolyn and you’re right. When you form a group with people of different skill sets then you have the support of others and are constantly learning and growing. That’s the real benefit of being a part of this type of group.
We have so much fun on Google Hangout. Our problem is that we’re enjoying ourselves so much that time just flies by. We do our best to limit it to just an hour but we’ve come to really know each other well and we’re there for personal support too. It’s nice to have people outside your family that are there for you through difficult times as well.
You are most welcome Carolyn and anyone would be honored to have you in a mastermind group. Thank you for saying that but I feel the same way about them.

Adrienne,
I love the idea of a master mind group.
Several years ago I a part of a mastermind group however we did not call it that. It was several years ago now and it was great to have the interactions with others.
The members of that group have all gone different directions now and most are not on the internet marketing anymore.
I am not at the present a part of one but have been thinking of just how I could start one. I actually talked to a member of my past group about this just the other day.
I think those groups are a great idea.

Hey Dee Ann,
That’s how a lot of groups go. People become more and more busy and get to a higher level with their business. But if they were smart, they would continue the support because like I mentioned, it can lead to partnerships, joint ventures and just the support with launching different aspects of your business.
You ought to give it a go when you know you’ll have the time to commit. Maybe one of your past group members would love to start that up again.
Thanks for sharing this with me and good luck.

Hi Adrienne
I too am in a mastermind group, and have been in most of my short delve into Internet Marketing.
I did not go looking, just sort of glided into one….
I have a mixed response to the value of masterminds.
Or at least my experience of them….
The idea, you all know something, and offer to fill gaps in other people’s knowledge, like you do for them…
However, you can be with a bunch of people who do not know, or seem to offer anything you do not know…. Now, maybe that is the wrong group for you this time….
Then, you can be in a group where people tell and share stuff like there is no tomorrow, and you benefit greatly.
The group I am in for a bit now has a leader who runs the meet up online sessions in such a great way I am learning HOW to run a meet up session, just from watching what happens each week. That to me is a pretty cool bonus to the sessions!
Perhaps one issue, is that as I am so new, and not 100% sure what direction I should be taking, I do not know 100% what I need to learn…. So without a good aim, knowing what you don’t know, then maybe no group will help….
Having a decided aim, an outcome needed, and then making sure the group you are in provides that is maybe a good starter step.
Thanks for the thought provoking article, and I love the email teases for each post…. Something else I need to learn, and am noticing how you do yours, to help my learning curve!
Thanks again!

Hi Jon,
I hear you, I didn’t go looking for my first one either. I was approached by someone I met in Triberr. From there it just snowballed. Glad to hear you’ve been in them as well.
They were designed for a specific purpose but if the people you choose to get together in a group would like to expand on what is shared or presented then that’s up to the group themselves. They really can be anything you want them to be but the main purpose of them started as brainstorming.
I know what you mean about not being 100% of what it is you need to learn. That’s what I feel into coming into this so I know that other people’s expertise would be crucial for many.
Why thank you Jon, I appreciate you sharing this with me. Glad you enjoy my teases… Don’t want to give away too much and am happy that they have enticed you over to my post each time. Thank you for sharing that with me.

Morning Adrienne – our Mastermind group has helped me so much in not just all the things you’ve mentioned, but also in attitude and spirit. I feel our group builds us up and helps us reach higher. We challenge each other, speak the truth about what needs to be (or not done) and basically it’s no holds barred. I prefer this type of group – learning about blogging and business is the goal, but I get so much more out of it – learning from those who have been doing this longer, those from other countries, those who are new to the business. Getting different perspectives helps each of us grow. It’s is not just about the ‘blog’ but about the people. I’m loving it everyday and can’t wait for the meetings each week. If you’re not in a Mastermind group, find one. If you’re not satisfied, find another. Their are plenty out there, but it is a must have, a must do if you are seriously considering blogging! Thanks Adrienne for helping people understand that is needed for blogging success.

Well – I’m not like your other commentors above – because I was either too proud or thought I was too smart to seek input from others! That goes for Mastermind groups too.
I believed for a long time that to seek the support of others would prove I wasn’t as smart and as clever as I thought was! Maybe this thinking comes from lasting too long in the corporate jungle – where, in my experience, feedback was always negative and earnings related.
Yup – I had a wake up call!
At my first Mastermind meeting back in Jan 2010 (I still remember it well) I had my fear of being filmed eradicated in 5 mins.
Then at the next, I collaborated with two expert marketers to brain storm a training product which still sells well today.
From then one – I’ve happily helps dozens of others solve whatever issues were troubling them at the time.
Mastermind meetings – definite must!

Happy Thursday Adrienne!!!
It’s funny that you would blog about “Mastermind Groups” at this very moment. Just yesterday, my first teammate and I was discussing this concept, the advantages, and began weighed our options. “Do we or Don’t we??” “Do we want to add more to our plate?”
Now, I am one that don’t begin any journey without seeking spiritual guidance, so after our chat I did what I do best, I PRAYED!!! Asking “if this was the right move, if this would benefit us and our newer business partners, what would be the outcome?” and to my surprise, what was the first email I opened this morning?? “Why Should You Be Apart of A Mastermind Group”!! AWESOME!! If that isn’t confirmation for ya!!!
Adrienne I can’t thank you and the other “Adrienne Mastermind Bloggers” enough for your input.
Hmmmmm, has a nice ring to it!!
Raena Lynn I appreciate your sharing as well. Your energy in regard to/towards a smaller groups put me more at ease with its success being that my group will start out small. It will be more personal and we can grow together all while preparing for the larger group to come!!
Since I’ve joined your mailing list, I’ve grown as a person and have been able to step out on more steadier faith in many of my decisions. SO YES!!! I’ve made my decision to start my very own Mastermind Group!! {of course with guidance}
Surely I am recommending your blog to any of my direct business partners or entrepreneurs looking to find comfort for their OVERWHELMING brain just starting their journey…
So as always, THANK YOU and Continued Blessings!!

Brilliant encouragement, Adrienne. I totally agree with you that mastermind groups are essential to our progression. I attended a regular meetup for over a year and it was so worth the effort of driving 5 hours to get to it. I progressed enormously in that group. The online groups are great fun and a really good regular measure of where you’re at, as well as offering help and support along the way. My hope for 2013 is to establish some sort of regular meet up, either locally with local marketers (I know a few already) or somewhere more central that people can travel to if they would like. Great post, as always!
Enjoy the journey.

Wow, you would drive five hours to attend a meeting. That’s dedication girl. I’m impressed but obviously it really helped you to grow tremendously or you wouldn’t have stuck with it.
I would think that if you could do one locally that would be great too but I love that we can live almost anywhere yet still come together via a Google Hangout. I think that’s just too cool.
Thank you for sharing this with me Mandy and I do hope that anyone who has yet to join a group will after reading this post and all the comments of how it’s benefited so many people.

Hi, Adrienne,
I think you are reading my mind.
2 days ago I created a Google+ community and already invited 2 of my friends. I was hesitant if it works better in the cyber space or in the real space. I have been with the local Toastmaster for a year and it was my best achievement for 2012. I love the energy there.
Mastermind means to me the power of the human mind compounded. It is huge. Up to 8 people is ok (I think). Each person can ask for help and then 8 minds working together instead of one. Wow!
Great post, Adrienne!

Hi Margarita,
I thought for sure you would say “oh my goodness, just one more thing I have to find time for”. But I’m happy to hear that you’ve started a Google community and if you keep it closed and for just a hand full of people with this intention it can be a great benefit as well. I know you love your toastmaster group.
It can really be as big as you want but in order to give everyone time they need, I would think around seven and below is good. But it’s your group and you can do with it what you want.
Thank you Margarita!

Hi Adrienne,
Yes, I have been part of a Mastermind Group before. It’s incredible what the synergy of a group setting can do for you. It lifts you up to new heights and really turbo-charges your own thinking as well. It’s fun to hang out with like-minded people who share and whom you can share with. I like what Margarita said above…“Mastermind means to me the power of the human mind compounded.”
Thanks for another wisdom-packed post, Adrienne, and have an awesome day!

HI Adrienne,
What a great suggestion – I love that you are talking about this here <3
I've been talking about creating such a group with a few friends of mine in the healing community. I can see now how important it will be to have different people from different arenas too.
Well, funny story about that – yesterday was our first test to see how Google Hangout works. I should have NOT been attempting it in my PJ's because I accidentally invited my entire friends and acquaintance circle to the hangout – and naturally several people logged on!! Hee hee hee. Learning experience. We had a great time.
Thanks for suggesting this,

Adrienne,
Some times I swear…you’re in my head!
I absolutely LOVE and can not promote higher…the power, leverage and community a good mastermind group creates. Flat out…if you don’t have one…GET ONE! Or like you said go make your own.
This is how I finally got some traction online and started to make money. I build a tribe of 5 like minded people and we started meeting weekly, sharing marketing tips and syndicating blog posts. I know of the wink wink you gave in your post. Hehe
That first group aka tribe lead to my first product, second product, first live event, becoming a coach for 2 of the top online marketers and winning 5th place in a popular affiliate launch.
However there are many reasons for creating mastermind groups. Blog syndication is just the beginning. I’ve formed many other groups some still going and 1 in particular lasted about 18 months. Almost a year longer than expected.
I started a group for the sole purpose to walk through a chapter a week of “Think and Grow rich.” I had 8 pre qualified members and we reviewed each chapter giving our input. We ALL had some of the best take-aways from that experience, even though most of us had read that book several times before.
Thank you for the reminder of mastermind groups. I’m wrapping up a post titled “52 tools every marketer should have” and I think this is #51.

Hi Adrienne,
Well, I had to leave a note for Raena. I can’t believe that the girl did it! She did wake up at 6 am to be number one. I like to believe that I have something to do with that, don’t I?
So, even though this is a fun very small example, we can say that mastermind groups do have a tremendous power to make people take action. What are the odds that Raena would have done that otherwise, and then Barbara being number 3. Hum…. not likely I’m guessing.
Thank you for this great reminder to your readers so they can see the huge benefits to belong to a mastermind group.
One very IMPORTANT thing that I want to add, though, is that it’s vital that the group remembers to stay POSITIVE. Sometimes the group can take a down sparrow, and that is not a good thing to let happen. As a law of attraction coach I am very sensitive to this.
I’m sure you know what I mean
Thanks for this, Adrienne!

Thank you for sharing this with us Sylviane. I would think that if they are forming a group with other marketers similar to what they are doing themselves that the energy would stay positive. I guess I can see that if things aren’t going their way it could take a spiral turn. I would hope not and that the inspiration from the group would keep it going in the right direction. Nicely written article, Adrienne! You’ve really laid out the advantages of being part of a mastermind group. As Raena pointed out, the idea goes all the way back to Dale Carnegie and Napoleon Hill’s description in his classic “Think and Grow Rich”. Unlike some of the rest of you, I’m currently only involved in one group, and unfortunately, because of personal circumstances, I haven’t been able to be nearly as actively involved as I had been or would like to be, and I have seen the toll it has taken on my business and networking. For people building a business online, a mastermind group can be especially critical. I’m looking forward to getting back into the swing of things as soon as at all possible!

This is the first time I’m hearing about such a group. It sounds interesting, though. But, I do agree with you, it is not easy to carry a business alone. I’ve personally experienced this thing. I started an online business (with some investment too) and very soon, I HAD to shut it down so as to keep myself going. I really lost it very badly.
I’d really love to participate in such mastermind groups. I can learn something new, when I can have a discussion with such established people.

Woo Hoo Raena….You won
For those who don’t understand the beginning of my comment, it is because several of us are trying to be the first commenter on Adrienne’s blog, and we are having a race lol. Because I get up so late, I never make it.
Getting back to the subject….
Thank you Adrienne,
Mastermind groups work well, and if you are in business for yourself, you need one. There is no reason for being alone out there. It is so much easier to grab a few friends and meet on a Google+ Hangout once a week, and just start chatting. That’s the beginning. A mastermind group will grow into itself.
I’m in a few, and they are “focused” on a topic. But I do have my favorite one (wink wink) that meets once a week. This group started and morphed its way to a friendship between the people on the group. Then as we got to know each other, we helped one another to reach their goals. Most of all it is an accountability group.
Although we are working on different strategies in business, we genuinely care that each person in the group is doing their best to meet their criteria.
We got to know one another so well, that sometimes we bring our personal life into the group and share our stories. We are there to help one another in all facets of life.
If you can get to that level of a mastermind group, and you can…..it goes beyond talking about one subject. It becomes a group of friends that you can rely on all during the week.

My pleasure Donna and how can I not write about something that has become a huge part of helping me move in the right direction. You are right, there is no reason to do this alone and what better way then to grab some people you know and admire and hang out once a week over on Google.
I love the one I’m in where we talk about what we’ve been doing each week and if we need help or assistance we ask. If we need some clarity on some things we ask. Plus connecting with others is about building those relationships and of course you can’t help that it runs over into your personal lives. I mean we are a support system for each other so it’s truly been an honor to be there for each other.

What a great topic, Adrienne. You’re absolutely right, we can’t do it alone, and even if we could, why would we want to! it is much better to share with other people.
I was only recently introduced to the idea of a mastermind group. I had no idea what it even was! And it’s funny because now I hear it mentioned all the time. I wonder if more people are getting the hang of it or if I’m just paying attention
I also joined a mastermind group recently and we talk every 2 weeks. It’s true about accountability. If I say I’m going to do something, I feel guilty if I don’t and then I know the rest of my group is going to nag at me. In a good way, of course.
I would highly recommend a mastermind group for anyone in business. It’s a great way to stay on top of your game and get support. Thanks for bringing this topic up, I’m sure there are a lot of people who would benefit from trying this out.

That’s wonderful that you joined one and there are so many people that need the accountability. Because they know that if they drop the ball time and time again and not do the work then the group will more then likely drop them. They want to help serious people and that means everyone has to be on the same playing field. I know what you mean about the guilt factor though so that makes me want to do it even more.

Hi Adrienne,
When I first set out on my online path I figured I would learn from purchased courses and go it alone.
The path I took in my overall research takes you on a winding road and you meet people and connect. I found I was getting the opportunity to join groups very early on.
Pretty quickly I found them to be absolutely invaluable. Nothing seemed too much trouble for the people in these groups. From early frustrations to ideas I started to run by them, nothing was too much trouble.
As my confidence grew I found I could also offer my help which felt good.
I wholeheartedly agree with you and can firmly say to people who are going it alone to find a group and get involved.
Regards,
Dean.

Hi Adrienne – great topic! I’ve been a member of a couple of mastermind groups, both started during training courses, neither of which have really come to anything, mainly due to people just drifting off and lacking real commitment.
I still keep in touch with one or two people from the groups, via Facebook and Skype, but it’s very low key. The mutual support and encouragement’s still very helpful, though, and helps to keep me motivated. I actually had problems with a guy in one group, who turned out to be very controlling and had some strange ideas.
I think the challenge is to find the RIGHT people, who are all prepared to make the same kind and level of commitment. I entirely agree with you, I think it’s an important key to success online – you can’t do it on your own.
I’m gradually getting to know a few more people in the blogosphere, so perhaps at some stage in the not too distant future, I’ll feel able to have another go. I think next time I’ll be much more careful, at the outset, about the nature of the membership and make sure we’re all clear about expectations.
Thanks very much for making me think about this again,
Sue

Hi Sue,

Yeah, those types of groups to me are never really good because most of those people are there for the same reason. They have to be dedicated people willing to do the work because the accountability is a big part of it.
Glad to hear that you keep in touch with one of them and you both are benefiting from that relationship. Sorry you had a bad experience with one person, there is usually a bad apple in every crowd.
I think that sounds great Sue and I fell it could really benefit you in the future. When you are creating your own you have more control so maybe this is a good thing.

They are extremely helpful Michael. Actually, the very first one I was in I was approached by someone who was in one of my tribes on Triberr. He knew my talents as a blogger so he was putting together a group of people who all had different talents. There were four of us in that group.
From there I had a friend online that needed the accountability so we started our own and then the ones I’m in right now I joined through a program but they are more of a tribe type group then mastermind. We took one of those groups and formed our own.
My advice would be to find some fellow bloggers you admire and see if they’re interested in starting a group. I’m sure if you Google mastermind groups and how do you find them that some suggestions may come up.

It sounds like a great idea Adrienne and I could benefit by being in one, as no one can make it in this industry alone. We all need each other. I will start looking for one to join or if you can suggest one, I would highly appreciate it.
Thanks for all the advice and support you offer in your blog.
Be Blessed,

Hi Neamat,
Glad to hear that you’ve met a lot of friends through blogging.
What I would do is for those handful of friends that you can really relate to, email them and see if they would like to be part of a mastermind group and then start your own. You can get people who have different strengths so that everyone will benefit from learning from each other.
You are welcome Neamat and I hope you start one soon.

Hi Adrienne,
Excellent post… Joining or setting up a mastermind group has been on my mind for quite some time as it’s very isolating not having anyone to converse with that even understands the Internet. I’m a complete newbie to the Online Marketing Industry and feel my lack of knowledge is not conducive to encouraging anyone to join me or to invite me to join them. I’ve been fortunate to have some people advise me for short periods however, I end up feeling I’m a drain ‘cos I’m the one receiving all the time and not giving anything specific back. Can you offer any advice or direct me.

Hi Evelyn,
Thank you, glad you enjoyed this one.
Mastermind groups are for mostly brainstorming and support. You have to have some skills so that everyone else isn’t carrying you. I would get some knowledge under my belt first if I were you and then maybe as you meet people throughout your journey you can consider forming a mastermind group. I would definitely start with setting up a blog and then start connecting with others as you build that up.
Hope that was helpful.

Hi Babanature,
Well I hate that! But seriously, I’m so happy to hear that you’re getting addicted to my blog.
It’s not as hard as you may think Babanature. As you visit other blogs and start building relationships with some bloggers, send them an email and see if they’d be interested in joining a mastermind group and let them know what you’d like to accomplish with it. I have a feeling that they’d be pretty excited about it too. You just have to make sure they’re within a time zone so that’s it appropriate for them all to meet.
Give it a shot!

Ahhh, a smash hit, Adrienne!
Mastermind groups are so insanely important, for all the reasons you listed AND MORE.
More than that, I feel they are important EARLY in any venture but they usually come LATE.
I actually feel a main factor in why so few embrace these with advance timing is something most people don’t talk about…
…ready?
SEXINESS.
Even the phrase “Mastermind Group” feels like some ancient, stuffy idea from the 60s that has really helped nobody. (Even though they help all who embrace them.)
Do I have a solution? An alternative? I’m not quite sure, but what I recommend to clients is to realize that most often:
“The closest people to you are the LEAST helpful and supportive, not because they dont wanna, but because they roll in different, weakly-knowledged circles. You need a group, a crew, a team of people who not only love and support you, but who HAVE DEEP KNOWLEDGE in the area you’re interested in.”
P.S. Sorry I been off the radar… things have been “eventful”.
Happy New Year!

Hi there Jason,
I appreciate you sharing your views with me on how important mastermind groups are.
Of course I know you have your unique way of looking at things but I definitely don’t think not joining one has anything to do with sexiness. I think it has more to do with intimidation and not feeling like you have enough to contribute. I mean if it is about brainstorming and solutions, etc. then if you haven’t learned enough to feel like you’d be any help then it would defeat the purpose. I know for a fact it’s fabulous for learning areas you don’t know yet but you do have to be at some level so that you can also contribute.
Glad to see you back and hope all is well on your end.
Happy New Year to you too! Let’s make this a great one.

Thanks for the response!
I guess what I was getting at is what’s more appealing/understandable to a larger portion of people?
A “mastermind group” or a “team”. I can only speak of my own experience, but I’ve never met a young entrepreneur who was like “Hell yeah, that’s my number one thing! I want a mastermind group!” but they usually understand and light up when I paint a picture of an awesome *team*
Either way, its food for thought, and we both know it wouldn’t suit me to just rehash the other amazing comments people like Mayura’ve already written here
Thanks for the well wishes, right backatcha and better and better all the time

I think that even if they are young, those who don’t even understand what it is may have that same reaction. I mean unless someone explains to you what it is and how it can benefit you they may all think that way. Until I knew what it was and the benefits of it I blew it off too!
Glad to hear that Jason, wonderful news.

Hey Adrienne,
I had no idea of Mastermind group dear
First I thought is it about MLM, then glad you have added a breif introduction there for me
Else I never know.
To be honest, I’ve never been to any kind of groups except for the awesome friend circle I have online found through blogging. There is only one community I’m in and found some nice fellows up there too. Well, as I’ve read other comments already and your replies, I think it’s possible to turn our friend circle into a mastermind group to share ideas and have back of each others, no?
Well, I think the commitment is the key there. Asking friends to create a Mastermind group would be a good idea? I’m just curious as I have no idea and need to think about after busy time I spend offline nowadays
Thanks for sharing a success factor with us and as I have no idea, thanks again for introducing it for me Adrienne
You have a successful week Adreinne
Cheers…

I know that you lead a very busy life but if you have a certain direction you would like to go online Mayura then finding other online friends who have those same desires is a great place to start. You definitely have to be committed but let’s face it. Those are the people you want around you anyway.

Hi Adrienne
I think Mastermind groups are essential. I have been in a few since I have been online and love our current one.
They do not just apply to those of us working at home on the internet. They are also very important for people in traditional small business. I have been in many over the years. A a business owner no matter whether on or offline you can never see yourself like others do.
One very important ingredient is honesty. People need to be prepared to give and receive feedback.
I think online is way to lonely to do it alone.
Great advice Adrienne.

Hi Sue,
Thank you for sharing that with us Sue and you’re right, it can be for offline businesses as well. I think that since most entrepreneurs come online and are really here alone, it’s a great way to get together and support each other through this journey so we all don’t feel like we’re alone.
It’s like you mentioned though Sue, you have to be able to take constructive criticism because everyone needs to be honest. But it’s so that we can all benefit from each other and grow.
We don’t have to do this alone Sue!
Thank you for your wonderful contribution and enjoy your weekend.

It is a fabulous approach for brainstorming and my group has really helped me to move in the direction I’m currently going and without their input I may still have never reached that point.
I know you hold a lot of meetings Leora so it’s really basically the same. You have your leader who can just take it upon themselves to get the ball rolling. Of course whoever is in charge when inviting people in can decide what types of things they’d like discussed. It can be as simple as everyone telling the group what they’ve achieve for the past week and what are their goals for the following. If they need help or direction then that’s where the group can come in. Really it’s just up to you. I think you’re be fabulous.

Ah but this is also where you can learn which is why it’s so awesome. There is nothing embarrassing about saying you don’t understand something. I think everyone needs that help from time to time. The most benefit though can be the accountability factor.

Forums and other group settings are great but this is a special time you put aside each week or month and visit with each other in a group setting like a Google Hangout. You can share what you’ve been doing or brainstorm on moving forward. You don’t have to wait on any email response or trying to understand what the other person wrote.
Cool concept!

Ahh well…
My mastermind group fell apart last summer, but I am looking to get into a new one now, especially if I can find one with a focus towards the personal development niche, since that is where I am working at the moment.
My previous mastermind was really helpful in creating better sales copy, and realizing some of the fundamental flaws in my strategy as I was working my business. Sadly, we all got busy in our own businesses and it fell apart. am trying to see if we can get it going again, but I am also open to joining a new one.

Hi Adrienne,
I love the way that you introduce this Mastermind Group idea. Let’s face it, not everyone knows about this. Even if they do, they may still have challenges in how to get started. You have made the process of starting one simple and easy for others!
I first heard about the idea of masterminding in the book ‘Think and Grow Rich’ but did not experience it until late 2011 when I first joined business networking. I was fortunate enough to be in a visionary group. We have regular business lunch meetings PLUS a small group of three called ‘Inner Circle’. It is the commitment to supporting each others and brain storming that it the most valuable to me.
For a mastermind group to work the best, there is the ‘confidentiality’ factor. This meaning that whatever challenges (say, struggling in keeping the cashflow in healthy state) would not be shared outside the group. The safe environment is the foundation for honest sharing and brain storming. No ideas are dumb ideas
Thanks, Adrienne!

Hi Viola,
Why thank you for that and I thought since it’s the beginning of the year then why not throw that out there so that those that aren’t familiar with mastermind groups may consider starting one up with a few other people.
Mastermind groups are not new, you are right. I think it would be hard to find someone who hasn’t read Think and Grow Rich but maybe back then they didn’t quite grasp the concept that you can form them however you want. Having access to the internet just means that you don’t have to search for people locally. That’s great that you had that option where you were Viola.
You are absolutely right Viola, what we share in the group remains private among us. The trust factor is huge and the purpose of the group is to support and help each other. That’s why they’ve been so successful.
I appreciate your comment, thank you so much for sharing that with me Viola.

Hi Adrienne,
I used to be in a hangout for a number of weeks, but it was a bit different as the videos were published on YouTube. I’m not quite in the swing of things as I visited Las Vegas at the start of January, but may come back to this idea (which is great, by the way!).
The truth is I never feel particularly comfortable in video chat sessions. Also, my strength is mainly with the technical side of things, which I find difficult to explain in a video chat. But hey, perhaps a video might be a good way to talk about things such as my blogging in seasons idea.
I could also get myself confident with participating in video chats by recording a few solo videos and putting them up on YouTube. I’d like to do that anyway
Thanks for the great post, Adrienne!

Hi Ben,
I’m sure that wasn’t exactly a mastermind group because normally what you share among the group stays in the group. Some hangouts are posted on YouTube if they chose.
You know they do have the screen share feature Ben so you can always explain things to your group by showing them your screen. Just look at it like a meeting and you guys are just sitting down and sharing ideas. Supporting and brainstorming with each other to help each other out. I just love that we can do it online now since we aren’t all located in the same city.
That sounds like a great idea but make sure you have everyone’s permission. They may not feel comfortable with a video chat going live for all to see.
Thanks Ben for your comment and hope you’ll consider putting your own mastermind group together.

I have learned only in the past few months how important it is to connect with like-minded people. I am part of my first Mastermind group and I have “Fallen In Love” (with the group – The Superstar 7).
Raena Lynn, Barbara charles, Sue Price, Sylviane Nuccio, Donna Merril, and Adrienne Smith you know the group that I am referring of.
A mastermind group can and should be a great way to help accountability but aid not only gaining leads for one’s business but also of helping each other in the group by sharing educational resources. I do believe that finding the right group is important too and there should be a true connection between the members for the ‘Masterminding’ to flow and not get hung up on personality issues.

Hey Michael,
Yep, you’ve definitely learned the value of being part of a mastermind group.
You definitely said it well and of course everyone’s group can be run as they see fit. The overall structure of the group those are or what I shared in the post. I think most people join them brainstorming and the accountability. We all know how important that is to get other people’s opinions from those we admire.
Thank you for your comment and hope you have a fabulous week. See ya later.

Hey Adrienne, I’ve never been part of one and I could never be part of one either. I reckon I’m just too much of a social recluse. It’s the main reason why I never join in on online seminars and stuff.
That said it sounds like a great idea and I know I’m missing out but then that’s life

Hey Sire,
So you prefer doing everything by yourself and on your own. Hey, if that works for you then that’s great.
They are fabulous for connecting with others in your niche that have different strengths. It’s a great way to learn and of course have others hold you accountable for what you plan to accomplish.

Hey Adrienne,
I’ve heard a lot about mastermind group before but have never thought of joining one, the issue is that i don’t even know how to find a good one to join and i thought you would have discussed that here.
Talking of forming one, i think i will have to look into it.
Thanks for sharing.

Hey Theodore,
Ah, maybe you’ll consider now. You don’t have to “find” a mastermind group, just create your own. When I joined my first one a blogging friend invited me. I wasn’t looking to join any group at that time and from there the people have found me. You can just go in search of your own group members.
Thanks for your comment Theodore and you enjoy your day.

I am a part of two groups on Facebook. It is a closed and small group but we are accountable to each other in terms of sharing and helping each other reaching our blogging goals. We have managed for a year now and it has bought some amazing results to our blogs and to networking in general!
