In Search Of The Perfect Author Bio Box

March 4, 2013 | By Adrienne Smith

I’ve been searching for awhile now and I continue to come up empty.  I’ve done a search, I’ve installed a lot of different author bio box plug-ins to no avail.

I decided who better to ask then my loyal faithful readers and perhaps one of you has the answer for me.

So what am I searching for?

The perfect author bio box of course!

What do I mean by perfect?  Okay, here goes.

I DO NOT want a bio box on my posts.  If people are visiting my blog for the first time and they want to learn more about me then they can go to my “About Adrienne” page and read everything there is to know.

Since I do have guest bloggers once a month here at my place I’d love to have a much nicer set up for them.  I actually created their bio box myself and it’s an image.  Because of that I’m not able to put any links in there and I don’t have a way for you to visit any of their social networking sites.

I want all of that included.

Now I’ve come across a few that seemed promising and although they said that all I had to do was include the [author_bio] code in the individual post, when I install the plug-in it doesn’t give me those specific instructions or a place to set up each author. I just read that on a post I found that explained how the plug-in “could” work.

Then again, those particular plug-ins that are “saying” they do all this great stuff haven’t been updated in two years.  So here we go again!  Do I install one that may work yet six months down the road it’s abandoned too!

My Author Box Plug-in Dilemma

So I actually have two ways I can go with this.

My first one would be to have someone write a code for me, like an HTML code, that I can include at the bottom of my guest blogger’s posts so that I can easily change out with their image, their bio blurb and their social networking links.

I know a little HTML code and what I did in the beginning was I set it all up in a table.  The problem was when I went to put the code in the post, the border around my table disappeared and I couldn’t for the life of me get it to show up.  I also had an issue with the social icons staying in place for some reason.  Hey, I said I know a “little” HTML code.  I’m by no means great at this.  Point me in the right direction, show me what to do and I can do that.

My other option is to pay for this plug-in so that it’s maintained and supported.  If any of you know a paid one that does what I want then I have no problem at all laying down some bucks.  Hey, I’d do that in a heartbeat if I can find the right one.

I’m kind of at my wits end with this so I’m reaching out to you guys to see if anyone has a solution for me.

Do You Have A Solution

So what do you guys think?  Do you know of a particular plug-in that does what I want or do you know of anyone who can write this code for me and I can get what I want?  Am I being naïve since I have NO idea how all of this works behind the scenes?

Either way if there isn’t a free alternative then I’m definitely willing to pay for it.

Seriously, this is something I’ve been looking for now for about a year to no avail.  I know there’s got to be something out there.  I’ve found a few blogs and left comments for the developers but no one has told me yay or nay!  What gives…

If any of you have any suggestions or recommendations for me, please leave them in the comment section below.  I would greatly appreciate your help.

I’d also love for you to share this post with your friends because they may know of someone too and that would be awesome, just in case we all come up empty.  If I find the perfect solution you know I’m going to let you guys know about it.

I want to thank you all so much because you always help me when I need it.  I’m so looking forward to these comments.  I just know someone is going to come up with the perfect solution.  I should have written this post before now but better late then never right!

Adrienne, … why not the “Perfect Bio Box” for the “Perfect Blog”?

I do not consider myself a blogger in the traditional sense. I do
“blog” although on a bit of a different level than you do. I have
came across some people that I do consider great bloggers. (You
of course being one of the top the more I get to “read” you).

I just spent some time reading your “commenting rules”, (Love
them).

I am going to contact a couple other great bloggers that I know to
see what they have to say about this. It may as well come from
one blogging expert to another.

Take care,

John

Hi John,

Is there even a perfect blog John? I hope to think mine it up there somewhere but I have a long way to go still.

Glad you liked my commenting rules. I finally had to put those into place some time back. Glad I did too.

Thank you, I really appreciate that. That’s so awesome of you to help me like that. I know I’m not the only one in search of a good author bio box so I know whatever help I can get I definitely appreciate.

Thank you again for your comment and your assistance. It’s greatly appreciated.

HI Adrienne,

My theme has the support for the Author-bio at the bottom of the page but I’m not aware of any plugin for the same.
Just let me know if I can be of any help on it as far as the HTML and CSS is concerned.

Thanks for all your support.Have a great week ahead.

Hi Sapna,

My theme does too but then that means that it’s my bio box at the end of every post and that’s exactly what I don’t want.

Do you think you could code something in HTML like I suggested here so that I can just change out their image, bio info and social links? Is that difficult to do?

Thanks Sapna for your help and you have a great week too.

Hi Adrienne,

It is not difficult, only thing it should work…..I will do that in HTML for you.If possible Just mail me the code which you tried and I’ll see why it didn’t work because border shouldn’t disappear until or unless it is getting overridden by something in CSS.

Thanks for your support.

Hi Sapna,

Ah, I don’t have the code anymore, that was over a year ago but all I did was the HTML table coding along with solid lines and the blue border color. None of that showed up. It reverted to black and thin lines. I’ve done that a million times so I know it works but for some reason it did weird things on my theme.

I really don’t want a plain looking box so what I’ll do is email you what I have in mind and see if it’s possible. I’m sure it is but I don’t want you to go to a lot of trouble. I don’t want to put you out.

Thank you Sapna and I’ll do that a little later. I have to go and find the one I liked. Stay tuned, you’re a DOLL!!!

You are surely not alone in this one Adreinne!

I have the same problem with the author bio box too, though now my dear hubby came up with one he had found. But for that you do need to have an author bio on your posts too.

Coming to that, I thought it IS important to have an author bio at the end of each post you write as that gives you the authorship rank too (hope I am not wrong here!) While I understand your reasons for not having an author bio box under each of your posts as this is your blog and all the posts are yours, except for the once a month guest posts, and also because you have your signature right at the end of each post – but I think the author bio box is needed, that’s what Google likes I guess.

I agree, if there are any paid ones that look nice and good, they would surely be worth going in for as a one time investment, rather than trying out many that don’t look good or don’t work out. I too tried out many, and am still not happy with the one I have. I guess I was more comfortable with the earlier one I had on my previous theme, but once I changed the theme, I too am looking for a nice code that would work with the theme and color.

I hope you find your answer here with all the tech people around – Ashvini perhaps to the rescue again – or Carolyn. :)

Thanks for sharing, and I would surely be looking forward to what others have to share and what you use finally too. :) Have a wonderful week ahead :)

Hey Harleena,

Dang it, I was hoping you were going to tell me different. Yeah, I don’t want the author bio box on all my posts.

Well I have my name at the top of each post linked to my Google account so that’s where the authorship comes in for me and I prefer to do it that way. With my image, signature and info at the bottom of each post that also gives me the authority too. I just don’t want to be repetitive on all my posts with the same “blurb” about me if that makes any sense but, I understand what you’re saying.

Maybe one of my readers will come to the rescue and then I can share this with everyone and find a good one. You know I’ll let you know about this Harleena so I’m keeping my fingers crossed. Maybe Ashvini does know of one or can help me write a code. Either way I’m good.

I appreciate your input Harleena, thank you so much. Stay tuned! Have a wonderful week yourself, I most definitely will.

Adrienne,

I looked and looked for an author bio box also about a year ago and came up with the one that I am using at the end of my posts. This one you do have to have a bio box at the end of the posts though.

I would not however say that this is the perfect bio box but just the best I could come up with at the time. It is not what you are looking for as it requires that there be a box at the end of every post.

I like the box at the end of posts as when I get to the end of the post and want to know more about the author (even is if it is the blog owner and there is an about me page) I can read a little bit about them right there.

Good luck in your search and I would be very interested in what you find as I settled for the best of what I considered a lot of bad options.

Hi Dee Ann,

That’s how most of them are, you have to have it at the end of every post. As you know, that’s not what I want and I can’t believe I can’t find one that gives you a better option.

Thanks for sharing your opinion with me, I guess I’m just different. I usually ignore the bio boxes and if I want to know more about someone I go to their about me page. If they don’t even have their name there, I won’t comment and I won’t be back. So impersonal don’t you agree!

Thank you Dee Ann and I’m keeping my fingers crossed on this one.

Have a great week.

Adrienne,

I totally agree, if they do not even have their name I think it is very impersonal. I really hate going to blog posts to make a comment and I can not figure out who even owns the blog because their name is no where to be found.

I understand that you do not want to have a box at the end of every post. I hope you find a box that will work for you.

Sounds like Ashvini may put it in share juice. That would be great. I love have a plugin that does more than one thing. It is so nice to be able to cut down on the number of plugins.

Hey Dee Ann,

I know, those blogs drive me nuts. I don’t care if they have multiple authors on those blogs they should have their bios someplace so that we can at least know who we are commenting to. I usually just won’t waste my time with those any longer.

I’ve got several people who have responded so I know I’ll get an answer to this one. Stay tuned Dee Ann cause I’ll be letting you know.

Yeah that’s what he said. Should he add this feature too! Man, he’s going to have a big winner if he goes that direction. We are making him work aren’t we!

I know for me Ashvini that if you can combine a few plug-ins together then that’s something that a lot of people will find even more attractive because it will prevent them from having to include yet one more darn plug-in that we have to worry about not performing properly down the road.

Great idea and I’m so thrilled to hear this. Yay!!!

Very interesting post! I would like to find out more about this later. And although I haven’t started on “guest post” blogger this plugin would be nice to have it would make life easier.

Speaking of Guest post I was thinking of maybe inviting you to be my “first” guest poster. Or, perhaps I would do an interview of you. Is there a possibility?

Um, woke up too early and started reading blogs. I believe you’re the 6th blog I read for the day!

I don’t know of any plugin that I can in good conscience recommend, I don’t use one.

I think if I were you , I would just use HTML and not a plugin. A plugin for the occasional guest post seems like unnecessary strain on your blog and we all know that blogs need to be as lean as possible.

I know you said you had a little trouble with the HTML but i did a quick search and found some simple coding to add a border.
I added the code to my latest border for you to see. It’s at the bottom of my post with dashed blue border.
Here is the code I used..

Add your text here Adrienne. I love Kayla.:)

Anyways, I’m sure someone here must know more HTML to make you a prettyfied one for you..

Cheers,

Hi Annie,

That’s okay if you aren’t aware of any. Yeah, the HTML coding would be my preference actually because like you said I only have them once a month so right now we aren’t even up to 15 yet. I certainly don’t mind that at all if I can get someone to help me with that. I certainly botched it on my first try.

I had the simple coding for the border but it just wouldn’t show up on my blog. The coding was there plain as day, the color was there plain as day but when I added it to my post none of it was showing up. I have no idea why and that drove me nuts.

What theme are you using because I’m thinking that might have something to do with it. I mean I know how to add the border and the color so that wasn’t the problem. Getting them to show up on my blog was.

I see that the code didn’t show up in the comment so email it to me if you don’t mind. I appreciate that and I’ll do some testing on my other blog.

Thank you for sharing that with me Annie and for your help. I appreciate you doing that for me, it means a lot. You’re the woman! :-)

Have a great week girl.

I didn’t want to overwhelm Ashvini because he has a lot going on with Share Juice Pro. He’s continuing to add new additions to it so that takes a lot of time with his coding as well. He would have been the first person I ran to but I wanted to give him a break. He’s helped me SO much.

Hey Rob,

Oh wow really? No, it’s not going in the sidebar.

What I want is an author box below each guest post that I have on my blog. So I just want it for each of my guest bloggers and I’m the one that sets up their posts. I don’t give anyone access to my blog. So it’s not like each individual guest author signs in through their own account so they can have their own bio info already set up.

Hopefully this comment will help and then we can correspond through email if you want.

Thanks Rob and enjoy your week. Hopefully we’ll be talking soon.

Pat at SmartPassiveIncome recommends it, and it’s on my “To Do List.”

I don’t like that it still has their name on the bottom of the opt-in box, it’s a paid plug-in. I also bought it for one particular look and they didn’t even have that option in their paid plug-in. You had to email the developer to send it to you. I also don’t like that it only gives you three different social icons to include in the opt-in box and I want way more then those for my readers to share.

Yeah, I’m aware that all themes come with one built in but as you mentioned that’s not what I want. I think those are ugly and boring myself. I’ve run across one that would let you input multiple authors including their links but you still had to have it on every single post. There has got to be a way.

I’ve done a lot of research on this one Theodore so if you come up with something let me know and I’ll be doing the same when I find a solution.

With all the readers that you’ve got here, I can’t imagine that no one wouldnint be able to help you find that perfect author box.

Mine comes with the Thesis BlogSkin that I have, that’s why two months ago when I had to make a decision to keep it or just go with Thesis theme I realized that I was going to lose a lot of little details such as this one, and wasn’t too happy about it. So I opted to keep the skin.

But again, I’m sure that someone would have something for you. And I hope you find what you’re looking for.

Hi Adrienne,

Sorry, I really don’t have a solution for you as far as an author box plugin. I don’t have an author box on my posts, but I do link my name to my about page and use rel=”author” to obtain the authorship.

Now you say you tried doing your box manually using a table. That’s actually a good way to do it. I don’t know why your border didn’t show up (maybe it was not ticked to show?), and I don’t know what software you used to create it (or did you just write the code?) There’s a great free html editor called Composer. Maybe you could create your author box in there and then just copy the code into your post.

Hope this helps, and have a great week!

Ah, that’s exactly what I did. I created it in an HTML editor and just copied the code but as I already mentioned it didn’t work. I know basic code and I know how to create tables. I actually have a lot of tables here on my blog and I bypass plug-ins as much as possible. So back to the drawing board with this one and I have a few people who actually know code who are willing to give this a host. I’m keeping my fingers crossed on this one.

However, I see the bio box on Wade Harman’s blog closer to what you describe. I’ll surely find out from him.

Will be glad to get back to you with response from him

Hi Enstine,

Ah, you sound like me. I’ve spent entire weekends searching, installing, activating and trying out different plug-ins only to find that they aren’t what I want either. What a pain!

Oh thank you Enstine, I would really appreciate that. Maybe he can point me in the right direction.

Will look forward to finding out what you’ve learned.

Thank you again for this Enstine.

I have checked that one and am in touch with the developer of that plug-in because once it’s installed it’s not giving you that option. It says on his blog post that you can so he’s trying to help me but let’s just say he’s not very speedy!

Thanks Enstine, I appreciate your help.

Hi Adrienne,

I’m sorry but I don’t have a solution on this one. Since I can’t help you, I posted your article all over the place in hopes that your hero or heroin will come along with The Perfect Bio Box. As you know, I just switched to Thesis and I love it, but I’m learning Thesis isn’t a love of plugins. So I’m sure you may be able to find someone to code this for you exactly as you specified. Good luck! I’m sure you will let everyone know you found it!

Hi Raena,

I just appreciate you sharing this one with some friends. Someone has to have an answer to this for me.

I’ve really never had any issues with any plug-ins myself and as you know, I’ve had Thesis for almost four years now. The only issues I’ve had with plug-ins were their particular functionality alone. Sorry you’re having problems and I hate hearing that.

Thank you again and I hope someone will come to my rescue.

Adrienne, why do you not like it under every post like most bloggers have? (curious) I think it may help as an earlier commenter said about Google authorship. Something to think about.
I just saw one called Social Author Bio and it looks like it could be used on pages and/or posts. It is a plug-in. Maybe that would offer you some flexibility? I also saw one called Custom About Author. Now you have me looking for myself too here. Some really nice ones!
I hope you find one you like and can’t wait to see it too Adrienne.

Hey Lisa,

I think it’s redundant and as I mentioned in my post, you can read about me on my About Adrienne page. I already have my image, signature and info below each post as well as my byline hyperlinked to Google+. All of my authorship is in place so that’s not an issue with me.

I’ve heard of both of those actually and I believe that the Social Author Bio is like all the rest. You don’t have the option of which posts you want it on. That’s the problem with all of them. It’s all of them or none at all.

The Custom About Author one I’ve looked into as well and it’s the one that has all the cool features on it for each individual author to create their own information. It “says” you can input the code on each post but when you install it there are no instructions for doing it that way. You have to check the box for all posts. That’s the one where I read the post that said it would do one thing, but the settings say something different. Driving me nuts girl.

Ah, I’ve got you looking now too! If I find something I’ll be reporting back to my readers so stay tuned. Let’s keep our fingers crossed on this one.

Thanks Lisa and enjoy your day!

I agree with those who say that code is the answer. I wouldn’t hesitate to ask Ashvini. Heck, he could probably do that in five minutes for you! I know he’s busy making Share Juice Pro even better, but he would love to help you out with this, guaranteed!

Yeah, I chuckled at Harleena’s suggestion. Obviously she doesn’t realize that you are the tech gadget queen, not coding but neither am I. lol…

I don’t want to bog Ashvini down since he has a lot of stuff going on with Share Juice Pro. I know he’s working on some upgrades at the moment. I really don’t want to add another plug-in to be honest with you and would much prefer going the direction of some coding right now. We’ll just have to see.

Thanks Carolyn, I appreciate your comment and advice. Always a pleasure to hear from you. Enjoy your week.

Hi Adrienne

Just looking at the plug-ins and found “Social Author Bio” 2.4 by Nick Powers. It sounds like what you are looking for. It says it has the ability to disable on posts and pages. It also shows that you can put the social media buttons on.

Well nervous mom with Kayla’s teeth cleaning, I know how that feels. It would be so nice if they would just cooperate and let their teeth be cleaned without having to put them out. Soon she will be home with nice shiny teeth!

Have a good day.

Hi Mary,

I think that’s the one that Lisa had mentioned too and I “think” I looked at that one. Maybe not but I’ve installed so many of them now and couldn’t get them to do what I wanted I’m losing count. I’ll have to go back and see but I know I don’t want the social icons enabled since I have my perfect plug-in for that now.

Yeah I know, this is her first time. I had that done with Blake (my Cocker Spaniel) twice and I was a nervous wreck. The older he got the more they told me it was kind of dangerous to put them out. He never lost any teeth and never had any issues with them and he lived to be 19. I’m hoping the same goes with Kayla but she’s 9 and has never had them cleaned so it’s time. I just hate leaving her there because I know she’s going to be freaking out. I want to be with her, is that silly or what!

Thanks Mary and I appreciate your comment on both topics! :-) Wish us luck tomorrow.

Don’t know if this will post or not,
Found this site with a long discussion about your problem
allbloggingtips.com/2012/09/09/best-author-box-plugins/
plus there is a recommendation in the comments for another one besides the 5 rated in this article..
WP Biographia adds a customizable biography section to your posts, RSS feeds, and pages. It supports custom types. I like the fact you can pick and choose where your biography shows up. You have some options when it comes to styling the biography box. The plugin adds support for Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+ and a few other social profiles too.
Did I just leave you some extra work to do? There are pictures of the bio boxes with each rating in the article…

I think this is out of the scope of what CommentLuv Premium was made for actually. I mean this would be for individual posts but everything else that his plug-in has really has to do with comment interaction I believe. Not a bad idea though now that I know he’s in search of a new project. I mean the perfect plug-in could be so many things.

Adrienne,

My apologies if someone already suggested this, but why not simply pick your most favorite plugin, the one you would be happy with for your guest posters, and then modify your single post php file (usually single.php) so that if the post_author = you, it would not display? It would seem that this could be done with a line or two of code.

Great idea Tim but I don’t know how to do that! See, I know basic HTML and if someone “tells” me how to do this then I can but that’s the issue. No one has so I’m back to square one.

How would you put their individual information in for each author when I’m the only author on this blog? See, I’m SO not smart when it comes to this stuff but I’d love to learn how! ;-)

Thanks for that suggestion Tim and no one has said that yet.

Adrienne,

The second part is actually very easy. If you look at your Wordpress Dashboard, you will see a menu button for Users –> Add New. You would create a user profile for each of your Guests with a role of either Author or Contributor but not have Wordpress email them the password you create. They would simply send you the post and you would enter it into Wordpress on their behalf. On the Add New Post screen, up at the top right, you should see a Screen Options menu. Make sure the check box for Author is selected. After confirming/doing this, at the very bottom of the page you should see a menu box to select which user profile should be used for that post. Hit publish and you are done.

Regarding the hack to get Thesis to not use the bio box on your posts, I could probably figure that out, but would prefer to try and do that via email as I would want you to take a screen capture of your single.php file. I would be happy to help. You should have my email on the comment, or you can use the contact page on my website.

Cheers,

…Tim

That’s a LOT of work to have to go back and do Tim and I really don’t want to create passwords for everyone. Just one more thing I have to stay up on with blog security you know! I see your point though, I went that direction for the very first guest blogger I had. Just decided not to do that with the rest.

I might keep looking and I’ve had a few friends offer to do some HTML coding for me so I might try that first. I have one plug-in to try too so let me see if those work and if not we can discuss this further if that’s okay.

I really appreciate your input on this and trying to help me out. It means a lot.

77 Tim Huntley March 4, 2013 at 6:07 PM

No problem – I ran a site with about 30 guest users and when I set up the profiles, I just made all of the passwords the same (since I did not send them the password, and I wanted to be able to do the posting myself).

Also, I was able to find an existing plugin that does what you are hoping for (allowing you to exclude an individual author) – Here is the link: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-biographia/faq/

Just look at the 7th item in the Q/A.

But this would require the approach of filling in a user profile for everyone as that is where it gets the data.

I thought about that too Tim, just setting the password the same but I change my password often and would have to do do the same thing for all of them and as time goes by that’s going to be more and more guests bloggers. Yikes!

Ah thanks a million, I appreciate that. I’ve got some testing to do on a couple so I’ll check this one out as well. Huh, I have to fill out the profile… I don’t mind doing that since I’m going to have to go back and do that anyway so I’ll have to figure this one out. Huh!!!

But have to say, an author bio-box does look quite nice and its worth having one. The question is, do we really need one on each and every post?

I hear that Google like the “author acknowledgement” but I have that in my byline and then I have my own blurb at the end of each post. I just don’t care to repeat what I do on each post. I like the way it’s set up right now myself. That actually just gave me a good idea.

Hi Adrienne,

That author box has been a difficulty for me too. I use a plugin called Advanced Author Bio on my personal growth blog, though I’m not sure if it’s what you’re looking for or not since I use it on my posts too. I think it automatically shows up for all authors.

On my author blog, I am using Genesis which has the option of an author box built into the theme. I like that one, it’s pretty simple.

That probably didn’t help, but that’s what I’m using!

Hi Stacy,

There aren’t very many that won’t give you the option of not having them show up on every post. It’s an either or situation. Now there are plenty that will let you sign up different authors but they have to be on every post. That’s not what I want and that’s why this has been such a difficult challenge for me.

My theme has a built in one as well but it has to show up on every page. I appreciate your comment though Stacy, it’s always welcome.

If all you are looking for is to add a author bio under each guest post in standard html format that you manually add the name, description, social links, etc. I will send you a simple html based code with some basic styling. You can change it how you see fit, and you would most likely need to tweak it very slightly to suit your site. You would just switch from the standard WordPress visual editor to the html editor, and then just paste the code in the bottom of the post. If you want something a little fancier then that would take much longer, and you would have to let me know what you are after.

I think I still have your email address from when you replied to one of my comments. I will send it to that address in a little bit along with the code, and a screenshot.

If something doesn’t work or you want it to do something else let me know, and I will see what I can do. Otherwise maybe I misunderstand what you are trying to do.

Hey Ray,

I got your email, thank you so much. That’s exactly what I’m searching for baring the fancy box that a plug-in can do. I would much prefer bypassing the plug-in altogether to be honest with you because it’s just one more addition I have to make. I certainly don’t mind creating my own and that box you sent me was what I was searching for.

I can’t thank you enough. I’ll play around with it later and test it to see if I have issues with it showing up on my Thesis theme. The regular HTML coding I had done in the past didn’t show up once I pasted the code into my post. And yes, I did that through the HTML editor.

Thank you again, that was so very thoughtful of you to do that for me. I’m truly touched! Stay tuned.

Hi Adrienne,

I think using HTML codes is pretty easy but if you have a plugin, that would be far too easy than copying and pasting HTML codes. The reason is in case if you wanna get rid of author box, you will have to remove HTML codes manually and it will take a lot of time. But plugin makes it easy and uninstallation is a one time process. What do you say? ;)

Did you try this one Adrienne ~ http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-biographia

That allows you to specify whether you need author box or not in specific pages ;) You can read all the information and try it out. I hope it will work out for you. Well, let’s see ;)

check my site. the plugin i used is a connection to gravtar. so you would create a user profile for each guest and when they post the bio box appears. all the data and links are entered on the gravatar site. and free.

Thanks Stephanie, I checked it out so do you have any options because I don’t want the number of posts to show up since it’s obvious they only have one. The only downfall to that is if they don’t have all their information set up in their gravatar account and if they’d prefer something else said in their bio!

I appreciate the help though.

I am pretty much satisfied with my blog’s default author box. If you are thinking for your guest authors then why don’t you install author box plugin which will show your bio. and whenever a guest author comes to you then just create an account for his/her and fill the profile with her details and links. It will show in the author box. If you don’t want to enable registration then just create on your own and publish the article under individual guest author userid into your site.

Thanks

Hi Atish,

Obviously you didn’t read my post, shame on you. I clearly stated that I do NOT want an author bio box on my posts. That’s the dilemma with finding what I want. I also think that the default author box is ugly and I don’t care for it at all. That’s my personal opinion though so I’ll continue to search.

Don’t worry about it Atish, I just know that there are some people who comment and haven’t really read the post and you’re normally not one of “those” lol… Don’t worry about it and I appreciate your email too! That was so nice and hope I didn’t sound harsh! Gosh, I hate if I come across like that. :-(

Hey Tonya,

You mean you can’t help me girl? Oh no!!! lol… Just kidding and don’t you worry about it. I’ve had numerous people come to my rescue and I have a few working on some code for me. I think it’s all going to work out just fine and I’m really excited about it too.

Glad you learned some things in the comment section Tonya, that’s always fun isn’t it!

I appreciate your post and spreading it around. A bunch of heads are a heck of a lot better then just one.

Hi Adrienne,

I’m in pretty much the same boat as you are. I have searched high and low for the “perfect” author box, but haven’t been able to find anything that really does the trick. I’m at the point that I may have to find someone to code something for me–especially since I’ve been getting more requests for guest posts on my blog recently. Maybe one day an author box will be created that really suits all of our needs. Until then, we’ll just have to figure something else out I guess!

Hi Felicia,

I’m going to be having a follow up post to this very soon Felicia because I’ve had so many people coming to my rescue.

First off, I did have three people offer to code something for me and two guys just sent it to me. It still didn’t work great but then I had another blogging friend offer to look at it and she fixed it. I’m in heaven right now.

Then my awesome savior, Ashvini who is the creator of Share Juice Pro, is going to include an author box in this already amazing social sharing plug-in that will do what I want. So my problem has been resolved but for now I’ll use the code because I’m sure it will take Ashvini a little while to get that created.

I was going to check out some of these other plug-ins that people have suggested to me that I haven’t tried and then give a full report for those who want a plug-in now. Hopefully you’ll be back to check out that post.

Thanks for your comment and I appreciate you stopping by.

Hey Felicia,

Yeah, I’ve definitely found a plug-in and will check with my coder to see if this code will work on most themes. I know they’re all different so they each may need individual tweaking. I’m not that smart when it comes to code.

Thanks Felicia and you have a great day.

Hey Adrienne!

Actually I’m not so much into plugins. I use them only if no code can serve its purpose. I love experimenting with my wordpress site and that is how, I ruined one of my sites yesterday. While I was tweaking my theme, I did something wrong and my whole site went down. Just an hour earlier, I got it fixed. I had to change my theme. And my latest theme has no Author bio at all. I am trying to find some code to put it at the end of each post. I think, we can easily find the code.

Here are few plugins that enhance the author bio-
- Better Author Bio
- Author Bio After Posts
- Another Author Box
- Fancier AUthor Box

Hope this helps.

Hi Koundeenya,

Oh no, sorry to hear you broke your blog. I don’t mess with the theme code, that’s way out of my area of expertise. That’s also one of the things I love about Thesis. If you want to make some changes or additions they have their own little area just for that so you don’t mess with the main coding of the theme.

I’ve tried out some of these that you suggested but they don’t work because I don’t want them on every post. I have found some coding though so for now that’s the direction I’m going to go.

Ashvini is going to include this in Share Juice Pro so I won’t have to include yet another plug-in.

Thanks for the comment and glad things are back to normal now for you. That’s never fun!

Hi Adrienne,

I tried the HTML box when my blog was on Blogger. When I moved to WordPress, I started using WP-Biographia, lots of customization options, you can hide it for your posts and show it for guest authors only. It’s free too. And, I think it’d fit pretty well with the theme of your blog.

Regarding the border, maybe a slight tweak in the reset.css may help. I had the same problem with bold and underline and I had to tweak that file a little and it worked like a charm. Maybe you should check into this, ask an expert maybe (I’m definitely not one!)

Hi Aditya,

That’s the one I’ve been going back and forth with the developer. He’s not real quick to respond but finally today got back and told me how that works. I’m going to check that one out now because it wasn’t as clear to me when I tested it earlier.

You’re right and I have someone working on that right now. She’s done a fabulous job with it so I might be using that instead of adding another plug-in because I really don’t want to go back and add all those people to my blog as authors. Royal you know what so the code to me is just much easier. I’ve been doing it all this time anyway so I’m use to it.

Thank you though for sharing that with me and for my update on this issue I will be including the alternatives that I’ve found.

I appreciate your comment Aditya!

I would recommend you Fancier Author Box if you’re looking for those features which you mentioned.
This plugin allows the user to turn the feature off for their profile and not the others from the Wordpress profile page. Moreover, it’s clean and simple. I have tried the premium version, but the free one works well for me.
[Note: I don't work for the developer.]

P.S. Are you using Thesis? I’m not a thesis expert, but I think you create for yourself a box using hooks.

Hi Chetan,

Not sure if I’ve seen that one or not but will have a look. I definitely do not want it on my posts so thanks for pointing me in that direction.

I am using Thesis and I use to use hooks but with their continuous upgrades I don’t need them anymore. How in the world would you create one through a hook for each individual blogger? Never mind, I don’t even think I want to know. Sounds like way too much work.

Thanks for your comment Chetan and for adding to this conversation.

I have absolutely no helpful advice or direction to give beyond – good luck and let me know what you find out! :D In the future, I envision having some guest posts on The Heavy Purse and would like to credit and feature them appropriately. Occasionally (not naming names!) I see a few of my fellow bloggers have guest posts but beyond saying it’s a guest post – they don’t really acknowledge who the person is and how you can connect with them. Isn’t that part of the point of being and/or having a guest blogger? I am hoping one of your wise tribe members will have the right answer and you’ll share it with all of us! Have a great day Adrienne – wish I could have been more helpful!!

Hi Shannon,

I appreciate your comment even though you don’t have any advice for me. I’ve had numerous friends give me some suggestions so the answer has been found and I’ll be sharing that in a follow up post soon.

I’ve heard so many differences of opinions about guest posts and that Google doesn’t like you saying it’s a guest post. Too darn bad because I hate going to a post and reading it never realizing that the owner of that blog didn’t write that post. It’s kind of insulting to the content creator don’t you think? They deserve recognition for their great content. I think that everyone needs to be acknowledged in that way.

I’ll have a solution for you soon so stay tuned for my follow up post.

Thanks Shannon and I appreciate you sharing this with me.

Hello Adrienne,

I apologize if anyone has mentioned this – I haven’t yet had time to read the entire thread.

I use a premium plugin called Fanciest Author Box at the end of my posts. It is totally customizable, you can show it or hide it before/after past, pages, custom post types. I like it!

As well, although I have not use this feature yet, Guest Bloggers, when logged in as a user on your site, can add their profile in the user section and activate their author box details to show with their posts, or you may be able to add it for them.

All the social media tabs are optional to show or to hide, and you can add your own custom tabs as well.

There is a free version of this plugin, but I don’t believe it has all the features. I went straight for the paid version, which
costs $10. You can check it out at Code Canyon, where you can also find a live preview – http://bit.ly/ZvuyYg

No, I’m not an affiliate….LOL.

When I first installed it (easy to do but I’m technically challenged sometimes) I had a question and sent an email to the developer Slobodan Manic at ThematoSoup. I missed the point that the bio details are not added through the plugin settings, as with other plugins, but rather through the WP Users setting.

He replied to my email quickly.

If you have any other questions, I’ll be glad to help.

Hi Jude,

Yep, that one has been mentioned but I personally don’t like the look of it. I don’t like the social media tabs across the top, I think that’s just that much more work someone has to do. Now that’s just my personal opinion of course but I appreciate you sharing this with me.

I’ve found some other alternatives though but thank you for sharing that because there might be someone else looking for what you just mentioned.

Thank you Jude and enjoy your day and weekend.

Hi Adrienne,

The tabs are optional and can be easily hidden or customized. I’ve seen people just use the social buttons underneath their photo. I might do that down the track.

You have probably come across this in your search, but just in case, there are 18 author bio boxes listed and shown on this
site: http://www.bloggingehow.com/2012/08/top-18-wordpress-author-bio-boxes.html

Hi Jude,

Thanks for letting me know because when I do an update I’m going to include the plug-ins that have been recommended to me and like to be sure and get this information correct. I didn’t know that you could just go with the social icons underneath because I’ve yet to see that on any of these boxes.

I’ll check out this post but I’ve run across so many of them I’ve totally lost track. I know that from when I started doing this research over a year ago that people have actually come out with better ones now. I’ve found a few now that do what I want so it’s testing them and I have my readers to thank for that, including you.

I appreciate you sharing this with me Jude, seriously! Thank you!

Adrienne,

Quite interesting request. My blog does not carry any Author Bio these days since I haven’t widely started Guest posting to my site.

Back to your request, It looks a simple HTML code snippet would be the right solution like, it could have the required fields tags and you can fill and use it where ever you want on each post. Let me check out anything exists already and surely share it Adrienne. Thanks.

Happy search :)

Hi Manickam,

I know that a lot of people have a bio box on their blog already. They feel that it should be on every post and I can understand that. I just really don’t want one on every post myself.

I had a few people write a code for me and I’m liking what they have provided so I think I’m good on this end. Thank you though for your offer, I appreciate that.

Appreciate your comment Manickam and hope you’ve been enjoying your weekend.

Hi Adrienne, it’s so great to include an author box in every single post to let new readers know more about you.

I’m using Genesis Framework, it gives me so much easier control over my blog. All I have to do is follow in the tutorial they have in StudioPress and I have an author box in every single post of my blog. BTW, put around 2-3 sentences in a the author box with a link to the about page are really great.

Thanks – Ferb

Thanks Ferb but as I stated in my post, I don’t want an author bio box in every one of my posts. Personally, I don’t ever read them on other people’s blogs unless I know they’re a guest. I prefer going to the about page to read more about them. Just my personal opinion of course.

Every paid theme has a default bio box as well but for the most part, unless you have a paid skin they’re all pretty boring in my opinion. Of course I know that what some people find attractive some of us don’t and it’s always the other way around too.

I appreciate your comment though, thank you for sharing that.

Hope you’re enjoying your weekend and good to see you again.

Hey Adrienne,

I’m a few weeks away of getting this setup for our blog network, but didn’t think of the solution until I read your post and thought it through..

Here’s how I’d go about it… it will take some coding, but a half descent developer can do this in no time…

You’d want to have a function created in your themes function.php file that inserts the bio box below your posts.

To explain this to a developer…

The function needs to grab ‘the Biographical Info’ from the ‘Your Profile’ section.

In the bio box you need their avatar, bio and anything else you feel is good (blog address etc)
and insert it there.

So when you get a guest blogger, all you need to do is add them as an author to your blog and get them to fill out that section.

Its not a big thing to do for the right developer on Odesk or somewhere, will save you heaps of time trying to get the ‘right’ plugin which I cant see having this functionality anyway :D

Hey George,

Well I appreciate you stopping by but I do have a solution for this already and I did have someone write me a code as a matter of fact. I’ll be updating everyone on what I found next week. Oh, and I don’t have to go to the extreme that you just shared.

Thank you for sharing that with me though and glad you’ve got something going for your blog as well.
