Why I Will Not Share Your Blog Posts

August 9, 2012 | By Adrienne Smith

Why I Will Not Share Your Blog PostsI love blogging, I love reading other blogs, I love learning, I love commenting, I love building relationships and I definitely love helping other bloggers.

We live in an instant gratification society and people want what they want right now.  They want easy, they want simple and they want instant.

Why is it so important that people share your content?

The more people that see it the more readers you can get. It really helps if you have social proof.  Ever heard of that?

Social proof consists of how many comments you get and social shares on your blog.  You know, when people hit the tweet button or share your post on Facebook.  That will put your content in front of their friends.

The more people who see your links the greater possibility it is that they will get interested in checking out your content. We definitely want lots of people reading our content now.

So if this is what we’re all trying to achieve with our blogs and people come by yet they see little to no activity, do you really think they’re going to take you seriously?  It’s not that your content isn’t any good but when people see a lot of comments or social shares then they will view you as an expert. People want to work with experts and that is our goal.

Why I Won’t Share Your Blog Posts

If I visit your blog and your social buttons aren’t set up properly or perhaps you have none at all, I’m definitely not going to share your content.  So, how do you think you’re going to continue getting new readers to your blog if you’re passing up on all this potential traffic!

That is how you get new readers, new eyes on your content and people who can potentially join your list.  None of this is going to happen though until you get your act together.

Now I know most new bloggers are just so excited to get their blog set up that they aren’t really sure what all they should be doing or how to set it up.  Although I’m not going to walk you through all of that, I will do my best to help with this particular area.

Install Social Sharing Buttons

This post is geared more toward the self hosted WordPress blogs.  That’s right guys, that’s definitely my area of expertise. I don’t know anything about the free platforms but I know you can put some social share buttons on them, I just don’t know how.  For that you would have to head on over to trusty old Google.

There are literally dozens of different social sharing plug-ins you can install on your blog.  Right now I’m using Digg Digg but will be testing another one very soon.  If I were you, when you visit a blog and you like their social sharing buttons, email them and ask them what plug-in they’re using.  It’s really that simple.

What I will admit annoys me the most is when I read some fabulous content yet I go to tweet it or add it to Buffer and their Twitter ID isn’t set up.  What do I mean by that?  When I go to hit the Tweet or Buffer button, all of your information should be there.  The title of your blog post, your blog post URL and your Twitter ID.  If your Twitter ID isn’t there then you won’t know that I shared your content.

Why is that important?  Because you want to be sure and thank all those people who share your posts because that’s how you start to build relationships and we all know what that means right!  If you don’t then you definitely need to head to my opt-in box right now and grab my free report.  It will explain it all.  Trust me when I say, that is the key to success.

If you ignore this you are passing up on a LOT of great bloggers you can connect with and who can really help you down the road.

How To Set Up Your Twitter ID

You are probably wondering well how the heck do I check to make sure my Twitter ID is set up properly!  Don’t worry, I wrote a post last year walking your through how to set up your Twitter ID so be sure to check that out if you have absolutely no idea what I’m talking about.

One more thing I want to point out about Twitter is that if you’re sharing your tweets and your followers aren’t online at that time then you’re just wasting your time.  Want to know how to find out when they’ll be on?  Check out my post on that very subject and don’t worry, it’s another free resource.

Another Reason I Won’t Share Your Blog Posts

You mean there’s more?  Yep, there’s a few more reasons.

I’ll visit some blogs and they’ve definitely got the social share buttons up.  As a matter of fact, they have so many of them I’m overwhelmed.  They’ll have two of everything at the bottom of their post and most of those aren’t set up properly.  You know, no Twitter ID like I mentioned above.  They’ll have them on the side of their post and a few at the top.

Why?

Why do you need so many?  Stop making us run all over the place guys.  We like easy and simple remember!

Here is my logic to this and please let me know if you disagree.  When I come to your blog I’m going to read your post first.  Only after I finish reading your post will I share it.  So I’m already at the bottom of your post right!  Don’t you think it’s pretty convenient for me to just stay at the bottom of your post and share your content?  Why do you want me to go all the way back up to the top of your post to find your social buttons?

Another thing that gets me and I know some of you guys think this is just fabulous but you take me off your post.  As soon as I hit the submit button on my comment I’m either taken to a thank you page or a comment list page.  What you’re now doing is making me work to go back to the post to share your content.  Guess what!  I’m not going back.  I have more blogs to visit and read.  Time is precious wouldn’t you agree?

These Are My Reasons

This is my post, this is my blog and these are my reasons.  I’m sure there are plenty of people who will go out of their way to share your posts and I hope you can keep those people around for a long time.

Remember what I said earlier?   They want easy, they want simple and they want instant.  The harder you make it for them, the more frustrated they will become and leave your site without sharing your content.  We want people to share our content.  That’s how we get more visitors to our blogs.

Are You Like Me?

We all lead busy lives and we only have so much time to stop by blogs and comment.  If you’re going to make this hard on us to share your fabulous work then you are the one losing out.

I would love to hear your thoughts on what I’ve shared here.  Are you like me?  Do you feel the same way or are you willing to do back flips to share other’s content?  I’m just eager to hear your opinions on this so please do leave your comments below.

Thank you for stopping by today and be sure to share this post with your friends.  It may be just what they were looking for.  By the way, you’ll find all my social share buttons right below this post just waiting for you and they are all set up properly.

Now, you be sure to have a great day okay!

I think it’s important to have a call to action at the bottom of your posts, but only one. (Leave a comment, share by post, follow me on Twitter, etc.)

I’m with you in that if I see 50 different networks and social sites, I’ll usually pass altogether but if there is a clear share widget and even better a request to share if I enjoyed, I’m more than happy.

Now I’m off to hit the RT button! :)

Good morning Warren,

I totally agree because when I was new to blogging I didn’t even comment because no one told me too. If you’re not an old pro and understand how this all works then how the heck was I suppose to know they actually wanted to hear what I had to say. You definitely need a call to action at the bottom of your posts but for the most part, if everything else is set up properly I’ll comment and share. Heck, I love commenting and sharing but not if you’re going to make me work for it.

Hope I wasn’t too harsh but man oh man. We need to get everyone on the same page here. :-)

Thanks for commenting Warren and for sharing. It’s always a pleasure to see you. Hope you and the family are doing great.

Great article Adrienne,
The other key I have found successful is to ASK occasionally to have the reader share your content. Most people will follow suggestions form those they know like and trust.
Along the same lines, we all know the POWER of commenting and it is fun to spread the “What do you think?” question throughout posts

Thank you Chuck, sorry if I was a little harsh! :-)

For me, they don’t have to ask me but for new readers they definitely should. You should always have a call to action in your posts but this was my own personal opinion. It’s good to know though that you do feel strongly about that so that’s an area people really need to remember. Not everyone will know what to do.

I love to ask questions because I love to hear what people think about my content. They help keep the conversations going so I definitely agree.

Thank you so much for stopping by today and I really appreciate your comment. Now, you enjoy your day okay!

Well Hello Adrienne,
I totally agree with you and one of the most important buttons that most people overlook is their RSS link. I guess I am not alone in using an RSS newsreader to monitor my favourite blogs, I do not have time to visit each on the off chance that they have been creative, yet some fail to brand their RSS correctly so I do not have a clue what I have subscribed to after a couple of days.

The fact that you mention digg-digg is one of the reasons for visiting sites, learning from others and this post reminds us that attention to your visitors experience should be at the top of our thoughts and actions.

Hi Igor,

I have found that some people don’t have that set up correctly and I shot a video about that on a guest post for Carolyn of the Wonder of Tech some time back. For me, I won’t immediately subscribe to someone’s RSS feed. I have to have visited your blog a few times and like what I’ve read. Then and only then will I subscribe but that’s mostly just to help me remember who some of the blogs are that I enjoy reading. I don’t check it on a regular basis because I have so many blogs to visit from my commenters.

I know for me Igor I had to just start asking other bloggers what they use. I would send them an email through their contact page because I wanted to know what they were using. If it was a paid plug-in and I wanted it bad enough I would purchase it through them.

But you are right, this is how we learn. I appreciate you sharing that Igor and thank you so much for the comment. Hope you enjoy your day.

igor,
I totally agree about RSS. I have mad the RSS logo most predominate on several blogs. I think what slows most people is there is “no tracking of subscribers, unless you you use Feed Burner type tools. But they slow down the process.
I sense my subscriptions by the number of return visitors and comments.
Anyone feel the same?

I absolutely agree, Adrienne. I’m not sure why people make it so complicated to share. Another thing I can’t stand is having those share buttons on the side run all through your content – I almost have to duck to read ;) . The Twitter tip is something so important. I’m off to share your post! ♥

Thank you for your comment, I really appreciate it. Oh, and the shares too! You’re the best! ;-)

Good Morning Adrienne,

I definitely find it frustrating to read a good post, and then am unable to share it because the social share buttons aren’ts set up properly. I’m not going to hunt for the icons. I agree that the bottom of the post is the best location. It takes 2 seconds to share a post, and most people will do it, if we make it easy for them.

Have you ever visited a blog where the comments were closed? I was quite shocked to see this on a couple of blogs. I certainly didn’t share the content of someone who doesn’t want any comments and doesn’t want to give any link juice. I don’t quite get that…

I installed RT at your suggestion quite some time ago. People will share our content when it’s good and it’s a simple thing for them to do.

Good luck with the big move!

Good morning Jamella,

I have learned now Jamella that when I have some people comment on my posts yet they haven’t made it easy for me to share, I may comment but they sure are losing out on the love ya know. I’m hoping this post will be another wake up call for many who are doing this and I’m really surprised at how many seasoned bloggers still don’t have theirs set up properly.

I haven’t visited a blog in ages where the comments are closed. If they are then I don’t even bother reading it. I want to participate in the conversation which is why I visit blogs in the first place so if you aren’t going to allow me to do that then you’ve definitely lost a reader.

That does make it very easy for people to share Jamella, you can’t get much simpler than that. It’s all laid out for them. :-)

Thank you, I’m excited and anxious to get this behind me. I’m also so excited to have her right next door. I appreciate the well wishes. Enjoy your day now and have a fun weekend.

Hi Jamella, Just to let you know, I had to close my comments at The Wonder of Tech after a post had been published for two weeks. I was getting hit with so many spam bots that my hosting company required that move until I could move my blog.

What I realized during that temporary time was that it was mostly spammers who wanted to comment on posts that were older than two weeks. I had one article about recipes coming to Google searches that was especially attractive to spammers for some reason.

I also find that most people comment within the first few days after a post has been published.

Do you have any thoughts on this, Adrienne?

I’ve never had this issue Carolyn and John Garrett actually had the same issue. His post ended up on the Warrior Forum and the spam began. I don’t know if I should be insulted or thrilled but either way, I’m blessed this hasn’t happened to me.

Sorry you both had this horrible issue.

Hi Adrienne,

Well done :) Glad you share them and they are yet reasonable. Sometimes I have to add up Twitter ID for tweets and let them know they haven’t set up ID or if there’s a problem with buttons. Well, if I tweet sometimes I go to my Twitter profile, copy & paste twitter handle and share. But can I do it everyday, eventhough I let them know? Time to think there. However if they have Buffer button with Twitter handle, then I make use of it instead of Twitter button.

As I think we need to do testing with share buttons, newsletters and most of functions related to our blog, rather than waiting for user response saying “it’s broken” or “not working as it’s intended”. Sometimes, no one will talk about it :) I’d like to mention another thing here I’ve experienced dear. Sometimes I wonder that share buttons share only homepage instead of post URL. Well, would you share if so? ;)

Cheers…

Hi Mayura,

I use to do that Mayura when I had more time and I wanted to share their content but there are only so many hours in the day and so many blogs to visit and read. I have let them know it’s not set up correctly and if they chose to ignore it then they can’t expect me to share their content. I’ll read it and comment but I’ll quickly move on from there.

If I visit a blog on a regular basis and their buttons aren’t working I will let them know. I know for a fact that’s a fluke or something’s going on and I’ll go out of my way to share their content still because that’s not a normal thing.

I’ve yet to run across any blog where their share buttons are set up to share only their home page so I can’t give you my honest opinion about that. I prefer sharing the content I’ve read, that I do know for sure.

I appreciate your comment Mayura and you enjoy your weekend.

Uh oh; do I have the ‘right’ stuff at my place? I do have some share buttons; I know that much.

I used to think people wouldn’t come by my place because I had a ‘free’ site and they wouldn’t get proper ‘points’ from visiting. They weren’t coming by because they didn’t like my stuff, free had nothing to do with it………..:).

Good info; hopefully I’m still semi-socially acceptable.

You’re good to go Bill. See, I don’t know how to set those up on the free platforms and I’m sure they aren’t as user friendly but you have your social buttons set up just fine and I always share your posts.

If you’re building a business online and you’re using free stuff then that can definitely hurt you. Since you just blog to blog then free is just fine. I visit a lot of free platforms because I enjoy the content they share and not everyone I visit is here to build a business. As long as they make it easy for me I’ll continue to do so.

Rock on my friend… You’re definitely socially acceptable, all the way! :-)

Great tips.

Hi Jens,

To me too many sharing buttons makes your blog look so cluttered. I never know which one I’m suppose to go to or which one works. I waste so much time clicking on all of them just to find out. It’s so annoying. :-(

I tried Optin Skins and didn’t like it at all. I know you had sent me the code to that one particular skin, which was why I got it in the first place, but it only had three social sharing buttons and I wanted them all. I also don’t like the advertisement at the bottom of them either so that was a turn off for me.

Ah, you’ve gone and put some at the top too huh! The thing I like about some of the tweet buttons is that they’ll let you post to buffer also so that’s a very good thing.

Thanks for your comment Jens, I appreciate it!

Enjoy your weekend.

Hi Adrienne,

I know what you mean. There have been times when I really wanted to share a great post but there was no way to share it short of copying the url and heading over to twitter or facebook and pasting the link. Nobody should have to go that far to share a blog post, especially when it’s so easy to add those share buttons!

Although it can be annoying when a plugin always takes a reader to the “thank you for commenting page” which is only supposed to happen with first time commenters. :)

Have a great day,
Stacy

Hi Stacy,

I agree with you Stacy and I just don’t understand why they don’t have those set up. I do one two bloggers in particular who don’t even have a Twitter account and the other share buttons they have, I don’t want to share their posts on those sites. I’m very selective of what I share there. I say join Twitter and get it over with. I mean you are here to build up a following right!

I have three blogs I visit on a regular basis and every time I hit comment it takes me to the thank you page. Every single time so I just don’t share their content. If they love that plug-in so much then that’s just the price they’ll have to pay for some visitors I guess.

Thanks for commenting Stacy and you have a great day!

Hi Adrienne,

Make it easy to share your content. So simple really. If you want more traffic make your share buttons prominent. Social sharing makes your job SO MUCH easier, because people will readily expand your presence if you post share buttons on your articles. Keen points here.

People are busy. Most are in a hurry. A select few will add your handle but most will not take the time to do this. Go into your code. Or simply pop into your backoffice. Add your twitter handle. Generate a ton more RTs AND attract a ton more followers.

Thanks Adrienne!

People want simple, easy and we’re always on the run. Heck, we should be grateful that they took time out of their busy day to visit so let’s darn sure make it easy for them to share our posts with their readers. That is how more eyeballs are going to see your content.

I appreciate your comment Ryan and thank you for visiting today. Hope you enjoy your weekend and you have something fun planned. Probably the beach again right! ;-)

Totally agree Adrienne!

This was a much needed post for all those who can make amends to their social media buttons, more so the Twitter ID’s that are mostly missing whenever we tweet their posts.

Another thing I really find cumbersome are the Share buttons that open another window asking for permission from twitter or other social medias, before really going ahead and sharing the post. Yet many people believe strongly about it and have it on their blogs, when there are simple options like DiggDigg and many others.

And yes, those thank you pages that we have to visit after commenting, and then to come back to open the page again to find the social sharing buttons are time consuming indeed. Very seldom would we press the back button just to share someones post, because time IS precious.

Thanks for sharing and reminding all of us to install our social sharing buttons properly. :)

Hi Harleena,

I’m glad you agree with me and have run into this yourself from time to time.

I think that some buttons the other applications have to have approval but if you already have an account then that shouldn’t be as much of a problem. The other commenting system that make me do this I do find annoying but since this post is about why I won’t share your content, I guess I can write another one soon about why I won’t comment on your post.

I guess some of those blog owners like these features on their blogs but to me even if someone is new, I don’t want to send them off that particular page. That’s just me but it’s obvious I’m not the only one that finds this annoying. Most of the blogs that do this to me take me off the page each time where it’s only suppose to be the first visit. Obviously something isn’t set up correctly…

Thank you Harleena and I appreciate you sharing your views on this subject as well. :-)

Enjoy your weekend young lady!

Oh God! I might be an offender! I’m off to check right now!

I do know what you mean about it not being easy sometimes. Some blogs I go to it isn’t even easy to comment on. And some I can’t comment on because it won’t let me without signing up to yet another ‘thing’. ID’s for this and ID’s for that, I get totally confused mostly. I prefer Wordpress blogs, they’re easy, I have a gravatar and can comment all the time, Disqus I have a profile for so I can comment on those, however some I have to do some complicated logging in before I can comment, which irritates me, but depending on the settings some free blogs don’t let you comment without a profile (Wordpress is a classic example, if you don’t have a Wordpress.com profile you can’t comment if the user has set it not to accept everyone).

And don’t even get me onto social sharing buttons! Twitter really is a mystery to me. I’m off to check mine now…

Enjoy the journey.

Yeah, commenting is a whole other post so I hear you about those. I don’t know why Disque changes some things but having to put my name and email in every time is starting to really get on my nerves. I’m seriously thinking about dropping those blogs because it’s too time consuming for me.

Hope my video helps with setting up your Twitter ID. Let’s get that fixed girl, I want to share your stuff.

Yep, I’m an offender alright! I just watched your video but now know I don’t understand Twitter at all! I must either drop it or get to grips with it properly. I never go there, I just hit ‘tweet’ when there’s a button on someone’s blog post. I never write on it, I never visit, I never look at anyone I’m following. Maybe I should just get rid and call that one a day. There are so many other things to get a grasp on right now. Thanks for the link to the video.

Oh Mandy, Twitter is an excellent source of traffic to your blog. Don’t get rid of it but just head over there twice a day, look to see who tweeted your stuff and thank them. That’s a great start and trust me, you’ll be glad you did. It’s not hard to do so don’t just drop it because you don’t understand it yet. Oh yes, I agree with all these.

I sometimes see major tech sites fail to have their Twitter ID in the tweet. You’d think they of all people would be on top of tracking this stuff?

And like Harleena, I rarely share if the button acts like Shareaholic and asks you to grant permission for someone’s application. It annoys me, and probably scares and confuses the average web user. I had it on my blog for awhile but dumped them because it was too much hassle for people.

I also used to have the buttons at the top and and bottom. Finally realized it just didn’t make sense, why would someone want to scroll all the way back up to the top? I will do it for certain people who I follow, but not for everyone.

Finally, I have comments turned off on probably half my older posts. A few of my older ones somehow gained high PR and then they ended up on some lists at the Warrior Forum. Then the comment spam just became too much for me. I know it looks rude to the average surfer that I closed the comments but I just couldn’t take it anymore lol.

All in all, I’m in complete agreement, Adrienne!

Hey John,

I know what you mean and some of these “Probloggers” don’t even have them set up properly. I guess they are at the place that it doesn’t matter to them because they aren’t going to reply to each comment or thank people for sharing. It’s beneath them now. That’s why I don’t visit or comment on any of those blogs.

I don’t like that share feature either John and I’ve come to realize the 99.9% of the people who use that feature don’t have their Twitter ID set up anyway. To me it’s just a waste of my time.

That’s strange John, how in the heck did your posts end up on the Warrior Forum? I know you don’t know that obviously but that’s the strangest thing. Do you not have GASP? I know it’s time consuming but you can actually ban certain IP addresses from ever reaching your site so that can really help in that respect.

Thanks for your comment John, I appreciate you sharing that with me. I was hoping I wasn’t coming across as too harsh but at the same time I got kind of fed up ya know!

Enjoy your weekend.

Hi Adrienne

You sure got that off your chest! I really couldn’t agree more though.

I have to admit, I have a side share button and also the share buttons after the post as well. I use the Slick Social Share Buttons Plugin for the side share button and it discretely slides out but only if you feel like clicking on it and only on posts. So hopefully you’re not overwhelmed by it!

The main reason I have the side share button is because I use the standard WordPress share buttons in my posts and that doesn’t have all the share buttons available that the other plugin does. I’m sure there’s a better one for the buttons under my posts but I’ve just never got round to finding one. Lazy! I also quite like having the side share button. It does make it easier for sharing I think, if you’re not put off and they’re set up right :-) .

The thing that is starting to get to me is when people have two commenting systems on the go; the usual WordPress one AND a Facebook one. Why not just use one or the other. I don’t think the Facebook one looks particularly great on a blog but I guess I can see how social media integration is the way forward.

I also find commenting systems where I have to sign up a pain – Livefyre and Disqus are two examples. They seem to have so many bugs. There’s a couple of blogs I regularly comment on and I like these blogs, so I stay but it really puts me off sometimes. I ended up losing the comment I made on one of the blogs and then just gave up until the next post. They then lost the benefit of my comment (well maybe that was a good thing!).

I share your frustration Adrienne and thanks for the tip on Tweriod that I just picked up on. I just went and signed up.

Hope your week is going well.

Hi Tim,

Yeah, I definitely had a moment here. I think I’m having those this month because I’ll have another one on Monday! ;-)

If I were you I would do away with the ones under your post since you prefer the one on the side. They confuse people Tim so I would have one or the other. I think the problem with the one on the side is that some new people have no idea you’re suppose to hit the share button, heck I didn’t for the longest time. I know a lot of people like them but the reason I don’t is because the screen resolution may be different on other people’s computers and they are either off the page or on top of your content. Either way I always have to change my resolution when I get to one of these posts so to me I find that annoying, not convenient. Again, they are cool but I don’t think a lot of people think about that when they install them.

I understand what you mean about the different blog commenting systems but that’s not what this post is about. I may get around to writing one about why I’ve stopped commenting on your blog now because of these different systems you’ve implemented that are becoming harder and harder to use because of all their log-in features. I prefer good old WordPress myself.

Thanks for commenting Tim and letting me know your thoughts on this as well. You’re going to love Tweriod, I sure do.

Enjoy your weekend.

Hi Adrienne

Thanks for letting me know that my Twitter ID wasn’t included on the buttons under my post. I had no idea!

I discovered that the JetPack Twitter button doesn’t allow you to add your Twitter ID, at least I couldn’t find an easy way! Apparently this is the same for a number of other sharing plugins.

I found a different one though that does allow me to add my Twitter ID so I’ve installed that tonight.

I decided to get rid of the buttons on the side as well. I hadn’t considered different screen resolutions etc so I took your advice.

Have a great weekend Adrienne.

My pleasure Tim since we were on that topic today.

That is ridiculous and if that’s the case, I’d have to use another plug-in. That’s the whole purpose of sharing it on Twitter so that you’ll know who is sharing it. Those are the people you want to connect with.

Glad to hear you found one that works for you Tim. The screen resolutions and viewing your blog on a iPad or other device. Those buttons end up in the middle of your posts.

I appreciate you letting me know and thanks Tim.

I read through this post with bated breath and now I had a sigh of huge relief, almost all of those points are not applicable to my blog, and am glad you will share my articles now and henceforth :-)

I do agree some of those small things will turn me off while sharing, I had a problem with my twitter sharing, but now it is resolved.

Yes, having your readers share your posts on social network has a huge impact especially when bloggers like you share my article, I can see immediately there are couple of your followers coming over to my blog.

Sorry I had you sitting on the edge of your seat Praveen. Now you know from your Twitter stream and Google+ that I share your content. I definitely wouldn’t do it if you didn’t have all that in place now.

I agree Praveen, sharing people’s content can benefit you. I’m just grateful that some of my friends and followers are eager to visit the blogs that I’m sharing content and that helps to get you more readers. You understand the benefits of this. Now let’s get everyone else on board shall we!

Thanks Praveen and enjoy your weekend.

Exactly, If I don’t get a sharing button then I am not going to share the post. Simple reason is that you haven’t made the sharing easier. So Its good to install the sharing buttons for all the post so that you can get more shares.

Couldn’t agree more to the points mentioned Adrienne!

These very same factors are the main reason that put me off as well and stop me from Tweeting a post. Some posts have the share button with Twitter that even ask you to connect to some application before you can tweet a post- another time consuming point. Or some blogs open the post on another page with just the title and link of the post- the rest of the information is missing!
As bloggers who want their stuff shared, we need to make it as convenient as possible for the readers to do so.

Thank you for sharing that Shamelle and good to hear that you find this rather annoying yourself.

We just need to set everything up properly on our blogs so that everyone can share our content to whatever platform they chose. The initial setup itself really takes no time at all. I hope for those who don’t have this in place, they will now.

Hi Adrienne, Excellent post! Amen to all that you said. I’m with you, the lack of a Twitter ID confounds me. Sometimes I will look it up, sometimes I will tweet without it, but I can’t understand why someone doesn’t want to include their Twitter ID!

I completely agree with you about the Thank You for Commenting page. I just had that happen to me yesterday. I went back and tweeted, but I wasn’t happy about having to go back to do that.

Social sharing buttons on the side seem handy but often I read a post from my iPhone where the sharing buttons block half of the text.

I haven’t found the ideal sharing plugin yet. I am very demanding. When I did my blog overhaul, I wanted the basics plus Buffer and Pinterest. Very few had this and the ones that did, the Pinterest button didn’t work on my blog.

I look forward to the day when my ideal social sharing plugin is developed. One plugin for all my sharing options is my ideal.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us, Adrienne!

Hi Carolyn,

Thank you very much.

The reason that I won’t tweet a post without the Twitter ID is because I’m here to build relationships with people and I want them to know that I’m sharing their content. Whether they recognize it or not is something entirely different. I know your blog is different from mine though.

I would go back in the beginning but now I just find it annoying so they’re losing out on some shares from me Carolyn. At least with this post they’ll now know why.

Thank you for saying that. The side buttons are convenient, I get that. But I also have the problem of screen resolutions and on some blogs their font is so small I have to increase it to read it. When I do then I can’t see the darn post because their share buttons are right on top of the post itself. I can see where they aren’t thinking about people reading their blogs from different technology. I appreciate you sharing that Carolyn.

Ashvini sent me his new one but I just haven’t had time to play with it since I’ve been gone every weekend with my Mom’s move. Although she’ll be officially moved on Saturday I still have to help her unpack and set some things up we didn’t get finished last weekend. I can’t wait to try it though. Let’s hope this one is your ideal one! :-)

Thank you for your comment Carolyn and I appreciate hearing your thoughts on this topic.

You enjoy your day okay!

I wouldn’t really care wether the blogger has social buttons or not. For instance I read ZenHabits, and I still tweet his stuff. His content is that good, and his minimalistic design proves the quality of his content. Top world blogger. Does he needs buttons?

I use Hootsuite anyway, it helps me share across all platforms.

See, that’s your preference Bojan so those bloggers ought to be thankful that you’ll share their posts no matter what.

This is just my own opinion of course and each individual can do with their blog what they want. At least they now know why I won’t be sharing their content. :-)

Hi, Adrienne:

I agree with the thank you page. It seems a bit of a forced action and it will totally throw me off track to what I was intending to do which might have been a share, a PIN – I am big on pinning now. Or it might have been to check out the sidebar or even a related post.

The thank you email is even worse, unless there is a goodie inside and I mean a real good goodie. But if it’s just to say hey thanks. I really don’t need this and it just crams up my already full inbox.

I also agree with your logic about how share buttons should be at the bottom and not the top of a post, so am going to switch mine out right now.

Thanks for sharing, Adrienne.

Cheers!

Hi Missy,

So that’s happened to you too and you weren’t pleased. Sometimes it takes me off guard and I just think oh well. Moving on down the road to the next blog I’m want to read.

I was taught in a course awhile back to include the thank you email but I feel like you do. I found it to be useless myself and stopped that rather quickly. It’s just trying to give me stuff they want me to do and if I’ve become a regular visitor to their blog, I know all of that stuff already. Now the ones that don’t have the plug-in set up so that I get an email notification that you responded to my comment is something I think every blog should have. I’m not going back to your blog to see if you responded but if I get an email you darn right I’m going to read what you shared.

There really is no sense to have social sharing buttons all over the place. You don’t want to make your readers work for it. Glad you can see the logic in that.

I appreciate your comment Missy, thank you so much. Now, hope you enjoy your day!

Adrienne,

Amen Amen AMEN! This rant should be on video.

I have to agree on a few points here. First off, make your post easy to share, but don’t throw all 150 options at them. This is why I went through a couple different plug ins. Second if I get flipped to a thank you page it is extra work to go back and hit some of those share sites.

Lead generation, like syndication, follows a path. The path of least resistance. Give people great content an easy way to share and reply to the conversation….simple!

Oh and that Twitter tip…I mentioned that probably well over a hundred times to people. They are missing out big time on something so easy to fix. But here’s the little challenge. When that tweet meme gets updated the twitter ID could dispensary. So every time we update our plugins we should check the settings. Just a good habit to get into.

Hey Ken,

I thought about that but then thought I might get a little too excited and scare everyone away. I still think I was a little harsh but I couldn’t help myself. This will be “that” post that I can refer people to when they ask me why I’m not sharing their content. I do believe I’ve said it all.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts about this as well Ken. As I’ve mentioned here too, I’ll even let them know in a P.S. in my comment that it’s not set up and if they still chose to ignore me then that’s their loss. And they are losing out BIG TIME!!!

I don’t enjoy visiting blogs where they have so many different options all over the place that my mind starts going nuts. It’s not an enjoyable experience for me and like you said, lead generation, like syndication, follows a path of least resistance. Make it easy for us and we’ll share your posts from this point forward.

Your Twitter plug-in should be checked from time to time because I’ve had mine just stop working. Every time I write a new post I check it but sometimes that’s not enough. I’m fortunate enough that my really good blogging friends will tell me when it’s not working but most of the time I’ll check it and it’s updated so there isn’t anything I can do on my end. I guess it’s just having a moment but for the most part, it’s ready to go.

Thank you for sharing that though because a lot of people don’t think about it. It’s set and forget.

You’re the best Ken! Enjoy your day birthday boy!

I didn’t use Buffer for the longest time Mys. When I first visited their site I found it hard to set up the times I wanted my tweets to go out. Since then they’ve improved their service so it’s much easier so I know for me that’s why I didn’t use them nor did I have their social button set up. It wasn’t until Carolyn of the Wonder of Tech suggested I implement it and informed me of the changes.

It is easier but I like to schedule my own tweets so I go back and forth between a few others. We just need to make that easy for everyone that’s all.

Hey Adrienne,

It annoys me when people don’t have their twitter ID in their share button, but most times, I just find out their ID and add it in there. I share less than I comment, so when I want to share something, I usually try to do it, but it definitely takes time, but these days I am becoming more impatient as these bloggers don’t make the changes (Well, I asked many of them and told them how to, they didn’t).

You are right. This is instant gratification world. People today, don’t have the patience (maybe, time, and why should they? They get everything in instant time and they don’t have time for anything, so should they spend time trying to find a silly twitter ID?).

Bloggers should take action and add the ID to their twitter button.

You are right about putting buttons at the top of the post (I had some at the top, I went and fixed it). Thanks for the tips, Adrienne!

And of course, too many options.

Giving too many options isn’t a good idea, because people are going to be overwhelmed. Focus on 4-5 sites such as Twitter, G+, FB, LinkedIn and Stumble upon.

Anyways, thank you for the post, Adrienne!

Hi Jeevan,

Ah, another person who is annoyed! See, I knew I wasn’t the only one and from these comments I see that the majority of my blogging friends feel the same way. Make it easy on us because my days of hunting down your information are over.

If you want more people to pay attention to you Jeevan then you need to also share their posts. Not all but the majority will see that and appreciate that so that will make them curious to checking you out and that’s how you get more visitors to your site. If they have all there social sharing buttons set up correctly it should only take a few seconds to share their content. If not then that’s definitely their loss for sure.

I appreciate you sharing your views about this topic as well. I always enjoy hearing what others think.

Enjoy your weekend now, it will be here soon enough.

Hey Adrienne,

Great post on this topic! I think that this is definitely an area where many can improve. I think you offered some fine tips on how to properly set up social media share buttons and can say that some of your previous posts on setting up tool bars and twitter were very helpful for me!

I have been to many sites where there are buttons all over the place and they simply led to nowhere! lol I think that is just evidence of the fact that many people struggle to get the setup working properly.

I will also say to anyone else who is reading this message that you are one of the most generous sharers I have met in the blogging arena! So all you commentors visiting Adrienne Smith, take heed of this post and make sure you fix those buttons or you’ll be missing out on a love of generous sharing! ;-)

Hey Cat,

I agree that this is an area that really need improving for a good bit of the bloggers that I visit. Not all thank goodness but I guess that’s why I had to write this post. This continues to remain on my mind every time I visit a new blog and run into this problem. You know me Cat, I love to share people’s content but I’m not going out of my way to do that for them. If you don’t make it easy for me then they are the ones missing out.

I appreciate your kind words and since my blog has received so much attention I love helping my blogging friends. That’s why I go to this trouble sharing what I’ve learned so they can learn through me what works and what doesn’t. I hate that we’re such an instant gratification society now but that’s just the way it is. Either we go with the flow or totally miss out. Heck, if I can learn this stuff then anyone can.

I can’t believe it’s Thursday either and these weeks are just flying by. Saturday my Mom is moving so tomorrow will be a short day for me online again. I’m excited but not looking forward to the unpacking now.

You have a great weekend Cat and thanks for stopping by. Always a pleasure to see you.

Hmm, I think I have this OK. I only have one set of social sharing buttons, my twitter id looks good, included in the suggested tweet, so I think that’s OK, I ma not a twitter expert, though.

This makes sens to me, Adrienne, I visit blogs and try to leave comments, but they have one of those I-frame commenting systems because they are afraid they are going to lose link juice, but their post is not SEO optimized anyway.

If I have to log into a 3rd party system to comment, I won’t do it, occasionally if the slider on the side doesn’t cover up the post, I might comment, but probably not. Those ideas are from teh dark ages of blogging where there was this entire mystique to doing that. Lots of people know how to do this now, and we don’t need things scooting all over the page trying to get me to pay attention to them. Blecch.

Actually, I think your rant was pretty polite. :-)

Hi Michael,

Welcome to my blog and I hope you forgive my little rant. I just visit a LOT of blogs and I’m just hoping that what I share others will learn from.

I don’t think I’ve visited your blog yet so I have a feeling that if you say it’s all set up properly I’ll definitely take your word for it. But of course Michael, this is just what I feel and what I will or will not do for others.

I’m not big on those other commenting systems either and since a few of them are changing now where I have to type in my information each time I’m getting tired of doing that too. That’s a whole other post though.

I can see where the share buttons on the side can be helpful because they follow you all the way down the page but like you said here, I find them right in the way a lot of times and that’s just annoying to me.

I appreciate you sharing your views with me Michael and I’m happy to hear that you thought I was rather polite in my ranting. I really don’t want to offend anyone but at the same time I want them to understand why I’m not sharing their content. To me that’s just a big loss on their part.

There is just so much information nowadays and so many people screaming for attention, that i gets hard to turn down the noise sometimes. Not that everything single thing i write is epic sh** as they say, but I have always thought that blogs were a two -way kind of communication, and sliders, multiple sets of buttons, and pop-ups (my personal non-fave) seem to be everywhere along with hello bars and wibiya bars, and some people have them all.

And the overkill makes it kind of hard to take them seriously as wanting a two way communication. And I really appreciate that you are replying to all your commenters. I think that is wonderful.

Wow, very informative post! You laid it all out there plain as day and nobody has an excuse now. Well, at least nobody that wants their content shared.

I get very annoyed if I have just spend time reading someone’s great post and then I have to look around for the social media buttons to share it. As a matter of fact, I’ve become so busy lately that I just leave. I just don’t have the time to search all over anymore. It just takes minutes to install a plugin and if somebody’s excuse is “I don’t know how to do it.” Well, there are tons of tutorial videos on Youtube. That’s where I go when I don’t know how to do something.

Excellent post, Adrienne, thanks for sharing it!

I know what you mean Ilka. I only have so many hours in the day to spend on reading blog posts and sharing them. If you’re going to make me hunt for them or once I go to all that trouble and they don’t even work properly, I’m outta there and I’m in NO hurry to come back.

That’s what I tell everyone. If you want to know how to do something Google it. Someone has created a video that will walk you through it and odds are, I most definitely have. :-)

Thank you Ilka for sharing your thoughts with me as well. Good to know I’m not alone in this. You can always send people to this post if they want to know why you aren’t sharing their content. lol..

Adrienne,

I am just giggling all the way through this post. I feel the same way. As I read each point I’m saying “me too” out loud….ok so I get excited about these things!

It is so great that you have taught people about this and the best part is when you address the issue of all those social share buttons. Every time I go to a blog with that I feel the exact same way. My eyes get all crazy and try to find the usual buttons I want to share on. What is up with that one?

I would have to say the the BIGGEST pet peeve I have is when I leave a comment and go to syndicate, but can’t because it directs me to another page. Now I have to go all the way back and find the share buttons. Grrrr that drives me crazy.

Oh…and another thing….those comments that you take all the time to write and then a pop up comes up to join the site so your comment can go through and you loose everything you wrote..Did that ever happen to you? I know you and I write quite the long comments. I have gotten stuck on some of these blogs and have to start all over again.

So my friend, you have not only made great points here and taught people what to do to make their blogs more effective, but you also have me now in a belly laugh.

Hugs,
donna

Hey Donna,

I just saw where you shared this on Facebook and I got a big kick out of that one girl. ;-) As I wrote this and read over it many times I thought I might have come across as a real bitch at times but you know what! I’m just fed up. So I have commenting rules in place now and this post for why I’m not sharing your stuff. I’m worn out!!!

I hate searching all over the place or I find they have so many different social sharing buttons that my head is spinning. I’m sure they kept trying different plug-ins and forgot to deactivate the others, who knows. I sure hope that this post will help some people realize why they aren’t having as much activity on their blogs as they had hoped. I bet this has something to do with that ya think!

Those commenting systems are a post in themselves. I understand why they like them for the social sharing part but not everyone wants to join yet another service just so those people can benefit from them. They don’t happen to me that often but I’m with you. It really does tick me off when I’ve taken the time to comment and it’s wiped it out because of that issue. I just leave and say to hell with it and I’m not in any hurry to ever go back either. Gosh, I sure hope it was worth it.

I’m glad I could help in two ways today Donna. Educate people on how to set up their social share buttons and give you a good laugh. Dang, that was worth it. Now I can’t wait to go read your post. Man oh man…

Thanks Donna and hugs back at ya girl.

If some post is really, really good, maybe I will to share it on my own. But in most cases I will not share it. It’s very simple. Why should I spend my time on this, if blog owner didn’t find the time to add these simple but so important buttons. I agree with you.

Hi Adrienne,

Well said! I do have very few buttons – twitter, facebook and g+. That is all. But I make sure the handles are all there. Recently I visited a blog where I really like the content and the way it has been presented and all, but the fact remains that whenever I go to share it, the twitter handle shows a @wordpress ; which is really frustrating, because I am hoping that when people read the tweet, they are able to associate the person with it. And who knows, if they really like you, then they might go ahead and follow you!

It is surprising how many people forget that. I have been looking into digg digg; here’s hoping I get it installed and running soon. I quite like it.

Also, there is a blog where after I submit my comment I am always taken to a “you might want to read this” page….

Anyways, it was fun reading this, very informative! Hope you have a lovely day!

Hi Hajra,

I know what you mean about that and some of them have an @handle but it’s not there’s. The @wordpress isn’t going to get back to them so it continues to surprise me that they didn’t even check that. Boy, are they ever missing out.

I’ve been happy with Digg Digg myself. It has it’s flukes like anything else and will stop working every once in awhile but I think that’s just the nature of the beast.

Oh, I don’t like those either. Anything that takes me off the page before I can share it is a waste of my time. If your blog is something I enjoy, I’ll search around myself thank you.

Thank you so much Hajra and glad you enjoyed this share. :-)

Hi Adrienne,

This was a very interesting post as it reminded of the importance of having social media buttons in convenient places. I find those floating ones a little annoying at times. Your post also me of something mildly frustrating I’ve been experiencing in recent months, when I visit Wordpress hosted blogs. When one posts a comment, one then has to login before the comment is displayed.

Hi Hiten,

Glad you found this post interesting.

I don’t really like the floating ones either I’m afraid. To each his own I suppose.

Those types of commenting systems are outside of the WordPress blogs Hiten. They are commenting systems some people are using because it integrates their social shares into the comments like when people respond via Twitter or Facebook. I don’t like them either and a lot of people won’t comment on them because they have to sign up for an account just to comment.

Thanks for sharing your opinion.

Adrienne,

You hit two of my pet peeves. 1- not putting your twitter info when i go to tweet and 2- that damn thank you page.

But… I think a lot of newbies or over zelous bloggers try to be and do everything they were taught or read rather than just picking a few things to do and sticking with them. ehem, i might have been guilty of that in the beginning. I think only with experience do you realize and learn and from reading posts like yours about what works and what doesn’t in terms of how to get more people to share your articles.

Hey Annie,

Ah, those two get me every time too Annie.

I agree, we all start off not knowing much and if we have no one to learn from we just flounder until we run across a post like mine and can start asking more questions. Either way it’s all a learning experience and I just hope some learn this lesson now until later.

Thanks for visiting!

Hi Adrienne, I read this earlier this a.m. and it was funny because I just left another blog because there were NO Share buttons, imagine? NONE? I do have a share button on my browser but when I’m the Droid, no place there to go except if they a share button. I do love having the option of the buffer so I don’t overshare on Twitter or Google+.
Anyways it drives me nuts when they don’t have their Twitter ID in their too and many still do not. We’ll have to share this and see it improves the # of blogs with them now :)

I use to share it anyway if it was good but in all honesty Mitch, it’s too much work now to go find all the necessary information and there’s no way you can still see me all over the place if this is what I have to do the majority of the time. lol…

Oh well, this is just “my opinion” of why I won’t share. It’s definitely not the written law by any means. :-)

Excellent points..especially about the Twitter id. The annoying thing is, even if one is eager to share, and substitute the via @sharethis or @addthis or @wordpress – when the Twitter id is nowhere to be found. Sad. I’ve seen blogs with lots of share buttons but no identification.

Oh I so need to tidy mine up. I know my twitter id is there but I am going to change to your plug in and get rid of Sexy book marks as I don’t like it anymore.

I too hate it when I share on twitter and no id. In fact in the networking superstars I am finding there are a lot not set up correctly.

I also hate it when you have to dig around to even figure out how to share – and no I do not bother for more than half a minute.

Great post as always Adrienne

Hi Sue,

I had that plug-in early on but didn’t like the way it was set up. I think you’ll like Digg Digg Sue.

You just send them to my post Sue and let them know why people aren’t sharing their content. Even in Networking Superstars, if they don’t have it set up correctly, I’m not sharing it. This is a lesson every marketer needs to learn if you’re here for the right reasons. I’m not going out of my way to put that all in place for them.

I hear ya Sue, me either. I’m moving on to someone else’s post who has this all in place.

I have a thank you redirect set up on my site and also have my social icons only at the top of the page.

I accept that going all the way up can be stressful; its much easier for the reader to share the darn post at the bottom of the page. :)

I’ll consider this tip during my next scheduled customization, or is there a plugin that allows you to choose the location of your sharing buttons?

This is something which everyone should know about because I have same thinking as you Adrienne!

If It is taking time for me to find the social sharing buttons in any blog, I would not share their post and you’re also right on this that everyone should put their social sharing buttons below post because expecting others to share the post before reading it isn’t a good idea.

Secondly, I’m redirecting only the first time commentators of my blog to “Thank You” page, but not everyone. The first time commentators will be redirected to “Thanks for commenting” page on my blog and I think that isn’t bad thing? Do you think Adrienne?

I think I’m already following all the things you mentioned in this post, so I hope to get shared my posts from you :P

Well glad you agree with what I’ve shared here Ehsan.

I know that some people will share the posts period but I honestly like to think of the people I’m putting that in front of. Remember that you name is attached to that as well so you have to stand behind what you’ve shared.

I know that those “thank you” pages are suppose to be set up that way but not all of them all. I have one top guru that continues to send me over there so I no longer share his content. I don’t know Ehsan, don’t you think when you reply to their comment and thank them that it should be enough? You’re losing some love of sharing taking them off your page. Those are just my thoughts but you do what’s best for you.

Thank you for commenting Ehsan, I really appreciate that.

I don’t share when the article is somewhat biased, posting hatred messages or something that tells me which I already know. The latter is usually common in ‘Blogging’ niche. Several upcoming blogger don’t write unique content and give you the same info, so that turns me off.

I know that people want to thank their readers for visiting so why can’t you just do that in your response to their comment? I mean we all appreciate people visiting our blogs so to me giving them a personal response from you in a typed message is more important then taking them to a thank you page. But, that’s just my personal opinion which is why I had said that these are the reasons I won’t share posts.

I have no doubt you’ll get that all put into place just the way you like it.

Greetings Adrienne,

Ooops I was guilty of one of those – forgive me?

I’ve actually just made a change to my blog, as it was after leaving a comment users were directed to a “Opt-In” page. After thinking about it as a reader, I decided to remove that additional hoop they needed to jump through.

I for one, I like the minimal nature of things, you’ll see I only have 3 social share buttons. One because I want to target those networks and two because like you say overloading your readers is not the aim.

Less is definitely more.

Nothing to forgive Simmeon, these are just my reasons and as you can tell there are a lot of people who will agree with me so that has to tell you something right! :-)

Ah, rerouting them to an opt-in page. Well, glad you thought about that one.

I can understand that “you” may want to only target those two particular social networks but what about your readers? If they don’t want to share your content on either of those then they just won’t share. You have to give them an option but if you prefer not doing that it’s totally your choice. Just another thought.

Thanks for commenting Simmeon, I appreciate that.

Hi Adrienne,
I have spent hours of my life trying to make sure that my twitter name is added to the tweet button for the “Add This” plugin. I like the plugin a lot but every time you update it, you have to manually edit the code to make sure that your twitter name gets back in it. It always seems that it is slightly different than the time before. I just spent about an hour fixing it again. I think that your advice on this subject is great. The bottom line is that you want things to be easy on your readers and you want to easily be able to thank your readers for coming by and disseminating your work to their network.

Hi Kristen,

I hear ya Kristen! I know that when some of these plug-ins are updated that we have to go back and check some of our settings. Heck, for the longest time my Facebook share button just disappeared although I have it set up right. Two weeks later is was back and the plug-in was never updated or changed. I just scratch my head over this sometimes so I know that every once in awhile something will just quit working. But for the most part if you have it set up and it’s out of your control I get that.

I’m sorry you have to fight with that so much each time but if you like that plug-in then I guess that’s just part of the process right!

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with me Kristen. It’s greatly appreciated.

I might have to go that route next since I continue to get so many comments. But, I’m definitely not complaining and I appreciate you scrolling back up. At least you don’t have to go to the top of the page. ;-)

See you soon.

Agree with your list here. Sometimes I want to email people who don’t have their twitter id set up properly, because I know they write good posts and I know people might not share it if they don’t have their stuff set up right, but I never do email them. In the past, when I give people suggestions privately, they get a little snotty, sadly. But, if people would just read your blog, they’d be all set! You always give easy directions on how to do stuff.

I hate that some people have been snotty with you Denise. They should appreciate the fact that you’re trying to help them. To me, I wouldn’t visit that person’s blog again because I’m about building relationships and if that’s how that person is then it’s not someone I want to support. That’s just me though.

I wish everyone would read my post and know that I’m only here to help them. Just think how much more they’ll be able to benefit if they have everything in place. Oh well, we can’t help everyone I’m afraid.

Thank you for sharing that with me Denise. I appreciate you!

Hi Adrienne

Thx for this , I so agree with you it is not good if your buttons in not in place
for people to share you content.

if you do not sit with a app on your browser then you cant share a blog with the world.

Hi Theuns,

Thanks for sharing your views on this because I think that a lot of people don’t realize that even though they may have some of their buttons set up, they aren’t working properly. I’m sure there are plenty of people who will go ahead and share their content but I’m not one of them.

I appreciate you stopping by, thanks so much.

Hi Adrienne,

it always amazes me how many people don’t have any social media buttons set up at all. Yeah, how are they going to divert traffic to their sites ? I’d rather a few more than none of them at all, although you’re right: If these buttons create a cluttered impression of a website, they’re doing no good.

Thanks for sharing your insights.

Take care

Oliver

Hi Oliver,

There are a few blogs I visit that don’t have any social sharing buttons up and although I’ve mentioned it they still haven’t done anything about it. Having too many is just confusing just like putting way too much stuff on your blog that people find distracting. keep it simple.

Thank you for your comment Oliver, I appreciate that.

I agree with you. Somehow I accidentally put the share buttons on top of the posts, so they are at the top & bottom. I hate it but I’m not sure what I did to make it that way to fix it.

Depending on what plug-in you have there should be a place that gives you the option of where you want them to be. It’s usually just a check box for the top, bottom or side. Just go into that particular plug-in under Settings and there should be something that will show you.

Hope you’re able to figure that one out Marilyn.

Hi Adrienne, I have become acutely aware that my twitter id is not included when someone uses the addthis plugin to post to twitter. Spent hours trying to find out how to fix it. Is it just me, or doesn’t it seem silly to use several different plug ins to share social media? I mean, I like Addthis but it seems I might have to add tweetmeme too. What do you think? Suzanne

Hi Suzanne,

There are so many different plug-ins you can use for social share buttons. Some people just have a preference. The good thing about the TweetMeMe plug-in is that it shows the count. Now we all know how important social proof is and that’s become more and more important so that’s why that one has become so popular.

I’m sure you can Google how to get that set up with whatever plug-in you’re using and get some help. I’ll be more than happy to walk you through that as well. I hate seeing anyone miss out on knowing who is sharing their fabulous content.

Thank you so much Suzanne for stopping by and I appreciate your comment. Now, enjoy your weekend okay!

Great post! The title had me a little confused, but it made sense once I started reading haha. You’re absolutely right though, so many bloggers disregard the power of social network plugins.

Hi Mehdi and welcome to my blog. Glad you enjoyed this post and the reason I won’t share other people’s content. I wish more people would understand the power of sharing other people’s posts and how it can get your content out in front of so many more people.

Thank you for your comment and hope you’re enjoying your weekend.

Hi Adrienne

I am definitely going to check that my Twitter account works properly now, this post has definitely got me thinking!

Totally agree on all fronts here. One I hate how many businesses don’t have any social buttons at all! Very frustrating. I have definitely seen the opposite extreme too, a drop down box that features well over 80 buttons where I have to search just to find the Twitter or Facebook ones. I normally give up on those and go elsewhere. Again frustrating.

I am actually about to update some of the buttons on my site, so this post is great timing. Just wondering what are your personal thoughts on having an email or print button in the social section. Do you think they are of any benefit?

Cheers
Thea

Hey Thea,

Glad you stopped by this post and will at least look to see if yours are set up correctly. Most people intend to do that but don’t. I find it frustrating actually.

It’s so annoying right! Either they don’t have any or too many. I find that confusing myself and if it takes me too much time to mess with them then I just won’t share their content. I would love to help everyone out actually but they have to remember that people have things to do and they can’t waste time looking on how to share content.

My personal thoughts on that is I haven’t see too many of those buttons on other sites. I’ve heard from just a few people who have told me that they’re printing out a post I wrote because it was exceptional and they wanted to be sure and follow everything I had laid out. Not many though, most people will just bookmark it. I installed Tynt some months back and it shows me how many people are copying my stuff and they are usually copying the link to send to a friend through email. I wouldn’t put any more buttons up there that aren’t really needed. Maybe you could ask that question in a post and see what type of response you get.

Thanks for the comment Thea and you have a fabulous day!

I think you have made it clear why you will not share. First even if want to, you can’t do it straight from the blog. Given the fast and furious nature of our lives, its less likely anyone would do it manually unless its the story of the millennium. You mention diggdigg but to be honest, I personally don’t like that plugin as the bar seems to follow you around no matter where you scroll around. There are other plugins that can be used, I suppose its a matter of personal choice. But all in all, having those social media buttons is super if not mega important to get a chance of being shared.

I met a guy last week who only shares posts manually. He said he didn’t “trust” the social share buttons so I’ve yet to figure that all out.

I’m using Digg Digg right now Shalu and it’s not going anywhere. I guess you mean when people set it up on the side? I think it’s suppose to follow you so that you don’t “miss” it. I don’t personally like them on the side though. There are plenty of great plug-ins out there though.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with me on this topic. I always enjoy hearing other people’s views as well.

Amazingly written and presented Adrienne. I am just gonna shift my share buttons at the bottoms of my post so that you come to be share my post. Absolutely agree with your point that you will not go all the way up to my blog just to share my post. :)

Thank you Shiwangi, I appreciate that.

I go on a tear from time to time because I do love blogging and sharing people’s content. But, I want them to make it easy for us and also remember that there are just so many hours in the day. Make your blog home for us and easy to get around and share your content. If you do that you’ll see an increase in activity.

Thanks for taking this the right way and I appreciate you commenting.

Hi Adrienne, long time no speak!

Well that was a grabby headline for your post, I like the negative push on it to stir up controversy, (I wanted to read it right away). Of course everything you say is true and not at all controversial, just good sense. My share statistics are abysmal but that probably has more to do with needing to work a bit harder with my content and post more frequently, (but I’m not too worried as in my case it’s just a personal blog)!

You told me on my blog you were interested in joining a Toastmasters (public speaking) group, do you recall? Did you ever do that?

Hi Roz,

Great to see you again, hope you’re doing well. Welcome back!

I’m glad my headline enticed you into coming on by and reading this one. I think I’m pretty spot on and I learned that a lot of people agree with me. Glad to hear that you do as well.

I did join one some time back but found all the people to be really stuffy. Up tight, way too professional for my standards so I didn’t stick around long I’m afraid. Not currently looking for another one but I will probably in the near future.

Thanks for stopping by Roz and hope you enjoy your weekend.

Awesome, awesome post, Adrienne!

You’ve taught me something I would simply overlook. This is really great. I thought that having the buttons installed is enough. Well, now you’ve proven me wrong. It’s nonsense to have buttons installed when we can’t maximize them, right? Now, I’m going to make a few tweaks to my blog.

Thanks!

Why thank you Gamin, glad you enjoyed it!

You are right, having them there isn’t enough. I’m so glad that this post taught you something significant about social media. Now, you go do those tweaks and I wish you the very best of luck… You go!!!

Enjoy your week Gamin and thank you for your comment.

Good points, Adrienne.

I’ve only just got social sharing buttons on this blog, and an optin form. I didn’t realise how important they were. In just 3 weeks of using them, my posts are being shared and I’m getting a few people subscribing.

My next task is to do the same on my other blogs.

I appreciate you and the help you give us

Thank you Shan and I appreciate that since I know you’re new.

Blogging is a learning process and the more we blog the more we learn. Aren’t you glad that people are sharing your posts? If you don’t give them a way to do that then you’re not going to get more visitors to your blog. I’m so happy to hear that.

My pleasure and it’s so happy to hear. You’ll get there, no worries.
