What Everyone Ought To Know About Google +1

June 9, 2011 | By Adrienne Smith

What Everyone Ought To Know About Google +1Google has done it again.  Yep, that’s right…  Earlier this year they had the Panda update which affected the content farms.  Google made a statement that said something to the affect that we “should trust them.  That they were just trying to put the good guys on one side and the bad guys on another”.  Alrighty then…

Shortly after that took place I heard that they had a lot of other things in store for us this year.  Surprise!!!  Introducing the Google +1 button.

My first thought was what the heck is this!  To me it looked like another social media button that I assumed we were to add to our site.   Like we don’t have enough already. Sure you want to give your readers different options so they can share your content on their favorite sites.  I get that!  But man they sure can junk up a blog can’t they?

That’s when the questions started flying and I wanted to know exactly what this was for and was it in my best interest to add this to my blogs.   So you guessed it, I went in search to find these answers.

Everyone’s Got An Opinion

Wow, everyone sure does have their opinions about this and I’m sure you do too.  But I’m going to share with you what I have learned about this new button and what everyone ought to know about Google +1.

Ready!

If you go to their official site, this is what they have to say.

The +1 button is shorthand for “this is pretty cool” or “you should check this out.”

Click +1 to publicly give something your stamp of approval. Your +1′s can help friends, contacts, and others on the web find the best stuff when they search.

So here is some of what I’ve read so far.

Some think it’s really great…

Some think it’s the worst thing they’ve come up with so far and it’s doomed…

Some just don’t care one way or the other…

Some people think they are just trying to copy Facebook’s “like” button.

Some people think that Twitter is still a lot more powerful so this should just be ignored.

Some people believe if you ignore this new feature since is does have to do with Google that you will be in a world of hurt later on.

Where do you fit in?  Do you have an opinion yet?

Which Is Of More Value A Tweet Or Google’s +1

I was over at Sire’s blog the other day and he had an interesting post about the Google +1 button.  I invite you to head over there once you are finished with this post and check out what he said.  But I’m going to sum it up for you the best way I can.  And yes, his post is titled, “Which Is Of More Value A Tweet Or Google’s +1“.

Now I love to share content on Twitter.  It’s by far my favorite.  It’s just really easy to do and you can chat with the people who shared your content and publically recognize them as well.  It’s just a fun site.  Anyway, there was this debate on whether a tweet was better than the Google +1.

Twitter seems to be more short lived.  In others words if you tweet about someone’s post then it’s up on their feed but will quickly disappear among all the other tweets right! Sure, a few people will pay attention and check out the stuff so I’m not saying it isn’t a powerful method for getting traffic.

Where Google +1 comes into play is that it’s an excellent way for you to tell Google that you love a particular site or their content.  It’s similar to when you “like” something on Facebook.  You see how powerful that has become and how those posts and content that have the most likes are showing up more in their search results.

Why not tell Google how cool you think this content is or site because like backlinking, it’s going to help your site get a lot more attention.  I mean we just never know exactly what Google has up their sleeve with this one.  What if they intend to actually incorporate these results into their search algorithums.  See how powerful that could end up!  This could especially work really well for the new guy.  We just never really know do we!

I don’t know about you but I’m not ignoring something Google comes out with because they are pretty powerful when it comes to ranking our content.  Whether you like them or not, whether you agree with them or not.  That’s just the way of the internet, at least for now.  All I can tell you is that my mama didn’t raise no fool!

Will those black hat marketers find a way to manipulate this as well? Probably…  But the end result will be that Google will eventually catch up with them and shut them down. Nothing will ever be perfect and out of the reach of dishonest people.  Bottom line…

How To Add This To Your Site

If you would like to add this to your site, I’m going to make it pretty easy for you.

I’ve checked out a bunch of posts telling you different ways to install this and trust me, I’ve tried four of them before I finally found one that is just too simple.  You know me, I definitely am going with the really simple method.

Go to your plug-ins and click on “Add New”.  Put “WordPress Google +1 Button” into the search area and install this plug-in.  Then go to “Settings” and the “Google +1 Button”. Choose the style and position you want as well as if you want the count to display and if you want it to show on all pages or just posts.  That’s all there is to it.  You can’t get much simpler then that.

Suck Up Time!

That’s the jest of what I have gotten from the Google +1 button.  As you will also notice, I’ve added it to my site as well.   I guess from this moment forward I can definitely say that I would REALLY appreciate it if you not only spread my posts around to your friends but hit the heck out of that Google button will ya!!!  I’m not bashful, I want people to notice my little place I call home over here.  I think we all want the love spread around.

So, I’ll be sure to do the same for each and every one of you when I stop by your place from this day forward so if you have this handy little button installed you can bet I’ll do my best to support you as well.

Any Thoughts

Your turn!  Any thoughts on this subject and have you already installed it on your blog(s)? Have you given this much thought or just haven’t gotten around to it yet?  Would really be curious to hear your opinion on this particular topic.  Which category do you fall into?

As always, I wish you all well and hope this post helped with your decision in at least some very small way.  Always look forward to hearing from you.

Until we talk again,

Hey Adrienne, I added it the very first day cause I sure am not going to ignore something Google comes up with. I actually think it will have a looooooot of influence when it comes to rankings. Off to read Sire’s post.

I agree Brankica. It’s going to be a heavyweight. “People” search engines at its best. I think it will finally help for the “smaller” guys to break away from the big, content farms and spammers.

The real, good content will finally start surfacing.

I haven’t installed the button yet, because I didn’t have time the other day when I first started researching it – but have the plugin bookmarked and ready to go today or tomorrow.

Excited to do a little experimenting.

Hi Adrienne, Please note that this is only effective for search results for google.com in the USA. If you are focusing on audience in another region. Google has not yet implemented the +1 ranking on search.

You are right, what I said is that you never know how Google will implement this in the future. It “could” have an affect on search results, we just never know do we. Which is why I didn’t want to be the last one to get on the band wagon. Guess it’s a guessing game now. Thanks for piping in though. Only time will tell.

I have read about Google +1 before, but I didn’t give it that much importance. I didn’t ignore it and I don’t think it should be ignored. I just wanted to wait and see where this is going. I think everything Google launches should be taken into consideration. And even if it is not important for webmasters, Google can make it so. I bet if Google drops a hint that the +1 button affects rankings, bloggers will get one as fast as possible whether they like it or not.

So I think I’d better get one now!

Have a great day, Adrienne!

I think we all have kind of waited on this one Mouh which is why I don’t always jump on the latest and newest thing and write a post about it. I want to hear what others are saying, what they are thinking and what may come of this. Like you, who knows how important this will end up being but when it comes to Google you just can’t ignore it. I certainly didn’t want to be the last person who implemented this one on my sites.

Thanks for your input, I appreciate your opinions. Have a great day yourself, I already am! :-)

Hello Adrienne,

First off, regarding your “Suck UP” section I have to say what I often say “I just love your honesty!” But I don’t think you sound like you’re “pandering” in the least! To me, it is your zest for what you’re saying, your belief in the knowledge you’ve gained and what you share that comes through and makes you “REAL”.

Thanks for the Google button research you shared … it makes me want one!

Warm regards,

Thanks for the summary! I noticed this button at the bottom of my posts the other day and had no clue what it was. I see how it could become a powerful tool, especially if google decides to add it into how content comes up in a search!

My only question is, how is google to stop someone from +1′ing the heck out of their own blog? I haven’t used it yet, so maybe there’s already some sort of mechanism in place.

Maybe since you have a blog over on Google they automatically set that up for you. I’m not sure about that.

That’s the part that people will be deceiving about. You can’t stop people from taking advantage of this type of feature so all you can hope is the people who are honest with continue to be so. But if you are online making connections and building relationships, you will build up a really great following and this will all come naturally. That’s the direction I choose to go.

Thanks Melissa, I appreciate you stopping by and sharing your views on this topic.

Hey Adrienne!

I’ve joined the Google +1 gang when I saw a post about it and it’s release earlier this month and added the button to my site too! I’m going to say that Google is most likely going to incorporate it into their search algorithms in time to time. This is going to be doing some serious damage to our SEO rankings if we know who to get the most +’s from people online!

The fact that our sites and blog posts are organic could only mean that they are going to be staying around for a much longer time. Tweets just disappear after a couple of days – Unless you’ve got a bunch of great RT-ers, it may last a little longer.

I’m very sure this is going to affect us big-time very soon.. maybe they’ve already included it into their algorithms? Just that we don’t know it.. and it’s starting to grow. Only time will tell! I’m definitely excited about this new function and I hope Facebook has that function included into their system too, so people can give us a + for blog posts we share on it.. It’s going to be so amazing, don’t you think so? :D

Time to start ‘plus-ing’!!!!

Regards,
Darren Spruyt

That’s good to hear Darren, that you’ve already jumped on board. I had to check it out a little more before I made my decision.

I think you’re right, it will be implemented eventually if not already. Like all things having to do with SEO, I believe if you continue to have a good community of followers and they are eager to share your information, this will be dully noted. Just like my blog has risen up in the search engines and it’s been because of the links leading back to my blog mainly from my commenters. Once they also start liking my posts as well, I only see this as an added benefit. Let’s face it, things will continue to change with each new month and year so we either learn how to move forward with this change or leave. There’s no other way around it.

Appreciate your comment and as always, for stopping by. Now, let’s start +ing!!! :-)

Hi,
I loved this article. I put this on my site right away when Google introduced it since I figured it Google started it, there is probably a good reason to add it to my blog. The tough thing is educating my readers to actually use the button. I will now be explaining the +1 to all my readers at the end of each post until they catch on.

This is a really good post because, as you said, there are a lot of opinions out there regarding this. I’m with you on this one. I don’t be busy doing something else when Google shows how this will improve my site. Sally Brown

Thanks Sally, I’m so happy that you enjoyed this post. So you jumped on board much sooner than me. Ah heck, I knew it would only be a matter of time for me too.

The one thing I’ve learned about blogging is to just ask your readers to do something for you. Tell them you appreciate their comment and you would really love them a little more if they +1 your site. Sure, educate them on why this is important but it certainly never hurts to just ask. I learned this the hard way. :-)

Thanks Sally!

I put the +1 button on my site as soon as the Digg Digg plugin offered it. I’m so bad with all that code stuff, I’d probably break something if I tried the do-it-yourself approach. Now, I want to figure out how I can track the button in Google Analytics. I would imagine that Google has plans in the works to incorporate +1 clicks into their search rankings, so I might as well get on board early instead of watching a possible hot trend pass me by!

Thanks so much for the LinkLuv Adrienne, you know how much I appreciate a little luvvin ;)

I’m sure that those you dislike the +1 button are those who have static websites, ones that don’t really offer content as such. You know the ones I mean, nothing much to read and just a whole lot of images or links to other sites. They rely a lot on backlinks so this will hurt them as not many will bother giving them a +1

You are probably right, static websites I could see wouldn’t exactly get a lot of that love being spread around. I visit so many blogs these days that I didn’t really even think about them.

I wasn’t convinced either Samantha in the beginning. Thinking that it was kind of mean actually. Kind of like Facebook likes, I mean seriously! People can hit the heck out of that but does it really mean they like your stuff?

As far as Google is concerned, you know they have an agenda and I’ve read several different places that they believe this will eventually faze out the backlinking strategies. Of course it’s all speculation at the moment but I’d rather be safe than sorry and help my fellow blogging friends get recognize for the great content that they share.

Thanks for sharing your opinion with me. I appreciate that I’m able to share helpful information at least from time to time. :-) Have a wonderful weekend my beautiful friend!

I haven’t installed it yet. I have seen it around, and I have even found it while searching Google. But so far, I haven’t clicked on it once. Well, I am going to click on it just after I finished this comment. So, your +1 button will be the first one I have clicked. How great is that :)

I am not sure what I’m expecting. I’m still thinking about Google Buzz, and that was not something I enjoyed. On the other hand, what they are saying sounds like the real deal to me. And Google, they are powerful, really powerful. So, I better install it, just in case…

I’m thrilled that you chose me to be the first one you are +1ing… Yeah me!!!

I know that in the past Google has tried different things like Buzz to get people’s attention but they probably saw how powerful Facebook likes became and how those are actually showing up in their search results now. I’m sure their minds starting really going to see how they could also improve the services they offer as well to help good content get recognized. I have no doubt that there will be more to come from this so I guess only time will tell. I was finally convinced that I should just put it up and be done with it.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. I enjoy hearing what others think. Have a wonderful weekend now!

Well hello Adrienne, Google certainly produce some great tools for use to use and of course we need to be aware of who pays their bills which is why although I still have the G+ button on my sites I no longer have a G+ account.

G+ is there to generate a massive data bank for their advertisers, which I am no longer allowed to be due to a non specified indiscretion. As long as you are logged in then they are free from the effects of European cookie legislation and you data from March 2012 will be utilised by all of their products and of course their advertisers.

Having had many of my Google services removed for unspecified misdemeanours, I certainly do not intend to spend time building a social profile on a site that cares little for me or my friends.
