The Secret Of Making Great YouTube Videos

by Adrienne Smith on March 8, 2012

The Secret Of Making Great YouTube VideosOkay, I can’t help myself.  You did read the statistics I shared in my post last week right!  Videos are gaining on us fast guys so I can’t reiterate enough that you need to jump in now while you can.

You definitely don’t want to be left behind when everyone is watching videos in the years to come and there you are still sharing the written word.

I decided since I was going to step up my game with making videos that I better invest in a good course that’s going to help me learn how I can start creating some that people will really want to pay attention to.   I know you guys enjoy my videos but I want people who don’t have a clue who I am interested in what I share.

So, I haven’t quite jumped in yet because I’m still in the learning phase but my brain is going 90 miles an hour.  The thoughts and ideas I have are mind boggling so I’ll probably do my next product review on this program that I purchased and am learning so much from.  All I can say is it’s fabulous.

So on to the topic at hand.  The secret of making great YouTube videos…

Hope you enjoy this video because I’ve got some killer ideas you may not have thought of that will help you find out what your niche is wanting to see.  Are you ready?  Okay then, take it away.

So What Did You Think

I know you are very aware of several of these tips that I shared but I bet you didn’t know about all of them did ya!  I didn’t so hopefully I wasn’t the only one.

Great way to really find out what people want to know about and it goes above and beyond just your regular keyword research.

  • Were you aware of all of these?
  • Have you used them before?
  • If so, have you stuck with it and included them in your keyword research?
  • If not are you going to implement them now?

Love to hear your thoughts on this and of course you probably know what I’m going to ask next.  I have three more videos to do in Barry’s video challenge so I’m open for suggestions if you’d like to learn something specific.  You’ve been so faithful and continue to support me so I’d love to help you if I can.

I’m open for suggestions and would love to hear your comments.  So, I will look forward to hearing what you have to share.  Let’s compare notes okay!

See ya soon…

If you enjoyed this post then be sure to comment below and spread the love.

Hi Adrienne,

Super key to focus on keywords. When I paid attention to keywords, I drove more passive traffic to my vids.

The keyword tool is one of my favorite apps. Search for keywords that people are looking for, but aren’t too high, so you don’t have to fight the Big Boys. Make the list, and work off that.

Good tip too about videos popping up under your chosen keyword. If there are buyers, you will see videos, you will see demand. Good starting point, and great tip about the rising searches too.

Thanks for sharing Adrienne!

Ryan

Hi Ryan,

I agree and an area that I have fallen down in I must admit. I’m so happy to hear that your results have been good using these methods. I’m stepping up my game now my friend.

Fighting the big boys is never fun. Hey, our content is worth viewing so just make it easy for them to find right! :-)

I never thought about the tip of already having videos for those keywords. That means that people on YouTube are searching for them as well. Or at least we sure hope so.

Thanks Ryan, as always, I appreciate you sharing your thoughts with me. Hope all is going well for you this week.

Take care!

Amazing Adrienne. You make everything so clear! Thank you so much for these tips. As you know, I’ve just started with videos – I hadn’t even considered keywords. I guess you have to approach video with the same strategies as any other content you create.

I’d add one other tip to your list of how to make great YouTube videos – emulate Adrienne Smith!!

Thank you Ruth, glad I was able to make this very clear. I really didn’t consider doing keyword research for videos either. Dah! Where is my head sometimes you know. The tip of locating other videos on Google was a key point too. That means that people want to see videos on that topic which is really good for us.

You are too kind my friend, too kind! I’ll take that though! :-)

Have a fabulous day Ruth. I’ll be by your place today, I promise.

Hi Adrienne,

First off, thank you for mentioning, and linking to, the video blog challenge. I really appreciate that Adrienne.

Yet again you have produced an excellent video giving us all a valuable lesson. I did know about some of the tools and services you mentioned but not all of them ;) In fact I paused your video quite a bit and went and applied what you were showing us so I’m now linked up to them ;)

One tip to add to your excellent list: Before I upload a video to YouTube I search YouTube for similar videos and select those with a high view count. I then check out the description and see what keywords they’re using. If I haven’t got them in my list of keywords i add them as they’ve worked for that particular video ;)

I also keep a notepad doc of all the keywords I use for my videos, but I’ve only been doing that for a month or so.

I can’t wait for the review of the video course your taking. I simply love creating videos and can use all the tips that there are….. well can we ever have enough tips?

Thanks for a first class lesson Adrienne, I’ll add your details and link to the video blog challenge page right away.

Take good care.

Respect and Regards,
Barry

Hi Barry,

You are very welcome Barry and I appreciate you putting this challenge together and helping others step outside their comfort zone and get started with creating videos. You are helping me to stay on a consistent routine of at least shooting one a week. Videos should be included in everyone’s marketing strategy so I’m glad you’ve put this together.

I added all the links in my description over on YouTube and I suppose I should have done that here too right! I’ll be sure to edit that..

I do that too Barry although it’s obvious I didn’t mention it in this post. Thanks for pointing that out. I’m always getting ideas of keywords I should be using although I have seen some rank higher with very few which I found extremely surprising.

It’s a great little course and I’ve gotten so much from it. That will be coming soon Barry.

Thank you for adding my link to the challenge. You always beat me to the punch.

Hope your ankle is doing much better today. No more doctor visits I hope.

I’ll be by your place today. Crazy hectic busy yesterday so once again, I’m a little behind but better late then never right!

Best to you Barry! :-)

I’ve already started getting Google alerts for one of the video keywords I used Adrienne. It was well worth pausing your video and applying that one ;)

The ankle is doing ok, the swelling is going down every night but comes back during the day but its getting better, thank you ;)

This really is turning into a great challenge. We’ve got some new people creating their first videos which is fantastic :) Plus we get great lessons from people like yourself Adrienne…. Win Win Win :)

Have a great day :)

That’s awesome Barry, getting video alerts can really be helpful I’ve found too.

That’s good to hear and I hope you’re being a good boy and keeping it elevated. I’m sure the swelling will start staying down for good soon. You must have really pulled it.

Oh I love hearing that Barry. New people doing this challenge and stepping outside their comfort zone. Boy, I know how that is so this is good news. Hope they can learn something from us Barry!

Thanks again and you have a great day too.

I learned a few new things in this course too and watch out because I’m going to take my videos up a notch or two myself. Got all those things going on in my head right now so just have to piece them all together. Plus I’m playing around with some editing software which is a lot of fun.

Thank you so much for your video response Nicky. I love seeing you in person and loved that you took the time to explain that to me. I really do appreciate it.

Now, you enjoy your afternoon and glad you enjoyed the post!

Youtube trends…who knew?! Well I guess 32,000 other people did! haha…

Great quick video tips. The 10,000 to 30,000 search range is good for those searching in Google, however that’s just search. There are tons of other places to get your videos seen.

One of my other favorite video tips is a video response to a top video marketer. Love these tips…I’ll be added these to my swipe file for sure!

Hey Ken,

Yeah, who knew! Dah!!! Silly me right! When you think about it, 32,000 isn’t very much. Not for YouTube so I think we’ve snuck in rather early still. Yey us!

That’s true, there are tons of other places but I know when people think video, YouTube is the King of Kings. I’ve never gotten a lot of views on any of the other channels so I just started concentrating on what works best for me. So maybe that’s a post coming soon from you! You can show us the ones that you’ve had great luck with and why! Ya think? My mind is just running over here Ken. Watch out.

The video responses and once again, being genuine with your comment will really help both of you stand out. YouTube loves video responses because they take notice and think, well this must be some video and we need to pay attention. Most of the ones I get have nothing to do with my topic so people need to rethink this approach. Great notes for swipe files in deed.

Thanks Ken, always a pleasure to hear from you! Enjoy your day!

Even if I created only a couple of youtube videos , the rules from blogging do apply. A carefully researched keyword along with adding it in the title and description can help you month after month with views and traffic. It’s a work done once and for good.

I didn’t know about Youtube trends and that you can find them on Twitter and their blog.

Wow, you are so smart; I didn’t realize there were so many ‘parts’ to it but all very doable. So will there come a time when you are ‘old school’ social and still ‘typing’ your posts, just like an old newspaper journalist?

Hope you are doing well this week ma’am.

Well Bill, I’ve never been called smart before so bless you for that! To get your content and videos viewed over time, there are a lot of parts to this if you want to do this properly. But once you get the hang of it and have a process down, it becomes second nature.

That’s what they’re predicting Bill. Reading the written word will eventually take a very big back seat to watching videos in the future. I mean who ever thought the newspaper would ever eventually disappear. Even my Mom’s hometown doesn’t print the paper as often as they use to because everyone prefers reading it online. Pretty soon they’ll be doing videos sharing the news instead. It’s an ever growing digital world.

You already are famous Bill and we do enjoy the few videos you’ve done. Just think to have your whit and humor live for us to view. Ah yes, that time is coming.

I hope you are still feeling okay. That bug is finally once and for all gone. I know you had a rough time of it. I’m having a great week myself. Thank you for asking and you enjoy the rest of yours too okay!

I’ll be by your place later so see you soon. :-)

Hi Donna,

Thank you and it most definitely is. I know that when I’m searching for things I want to learn I go to YouTube and totally bypass Google. So it helps that people are sharing video content with the things we want to know about.

Glad I could help with those search tips. You definitely want to stay within a lower range so there isn’t as much competition and with putting up some great content, people will be finding your content in no time at all.

Trends do come and go but if you know you’re going to do a video on a particular day and you have your keywords ready, head over to trends and see what’s up. You might be able to throw something in there that will relate to your topic and get an instant influx in visitors. You certainly don’t have to be misleading about your content to get some attention.

Thank you Donna and always a pleasure to see you.

Seriously.

This is epic. These tools are all free and all super-powerful to help us ride the waves of cultural focus.

Cultural focus + trends are insane leverage, and using them feels fantastic. Not using them generally feels… difficult :)

I fully intend to put all of these into action eventually, and I’m starting with Google Insights.

Yeah, and the key is that I look at it not as headlines + keywords, but as a way to leverage and ride cultural waves.

Have you ever tried fighting a wave? You get no where and end up drowned.

Ever tried surfing one? You cover a LOT of ground.

Same goes for your blog or business.

And I’ll keep you posted :D

The next time you do keyword research, be sure to check out these other tools. I know we don’t even think about them at all but it can really help step up our game. Doing some things others aren’t so it’s a great way to get our videos viewed more. Oh yeah, that’s what we all want.

Thank you so much Oliver and I hope you enjoy your weekend.

Hi Adrienne,

It is great to jump into YouTube and create unique videos! YouTube is a very important tool that can increase huge traffic and credibility. Most of my latest searches of “How To” tutorials are on YouTube. It is the place that you can find every information you need!

I’m impressed by your video tutorial. You mentioned Google Insights and “rising searches”! Didn’t know about it till now!

Thanks for sharing with us!

Hi Adrienne,

Looks like I’m running a bit “tardy for the party” here. lol What can I say? I’ve been doused with phone calls and have been running triage in my home office to work my primary biz. :)

I am so glad I saw this today though! I have not been doing even 1/2 of this awesome research you’ve shown us with the Google Insights and the YouTube Trends. I haven’t been making videos for a little while mostly due to having so many other things in the “triage queue” but this is one of the areas I need to be working on more. I’ve been working on getting some tasks of mine outsourced. I had a couple of false steps made in that department so I’ve been working on getting some better equipped folks to help me out in some areas so I can focus more on others.

:) I am always so impressed with your tips, girl! These are right at the top of the list for me!!

Happy Friday to you!

Hi Cat,

I know the feeling Cat, that was my day yesterday! We all can’t be everywhere when we want because business gets in the way. Imagine that! ;-)

I’m glad these tips will help you with moving in that direction Cat. I know you are overwhelmed at times with everything you have going. You are one busy and powerful lady so I hope you can resolve those outsourcing issues and find some people who will do you an exceptional job. Why don’t you write a post about that and ask your readers who they recommend. Word of mouth works wonders girl.

Thank you so much, that makes me so happy. I love that I’m really helping people learn some things and move in the right direction. Seriously Cat, that means a lot. Especially coming from you, someone I truly admire and who has been in this business for a very long time. Thank you!

Happy Friday to you too and enjoy your weekend as well. Make it a great one!

Oh boy, do I ever know what you mean about not being everywhere we want to be! Things are going really great in my primary right now and I just don’t want to let up off the gasoline!

Your tips absolutely drove a picture into my mind. It’s neat how some of the things we “think” we know actually become a lot more clear with some repetition and/or a new way of presentation. Something clicked for me today seeing the bigger picture as you were walking us through “the ropes” on your video.

I like your idea of posting this out to my readers! I think I’m going to do that before I take Jo out for a walk in this gorgeous weather that is back for the WHOLE WEEKEND! Yay!! :)

I appreciate ya, Adrienne! Thanks for sharing your fantastic ideas and encouragement with me. You, my friend, are the best!

I’m SO happy to hear that things are going great for you Cat in your primary. I love hearing that so relax a bit. I know, it’s hard for you when you’re pumped.

I know, when I ran across this info too I though well what do you know. I never thought of that and not quite sure why I didn’t. That’s what we need sometimes though, a different perspective on it or something just pointing things out. Glad it helped.

Yeah, why not ask the people you trust. I think you might have a lot better luck. So let’s keep our fingers crossed.

It’s cold and raining here today so poor Kayla is still hiding in the bathroom. She hates this weather so much bless her heart. I hope it stops soon.

Wonderful tips Adrienne!

I did see Paul’s video when he came over and it sure was an eye opener as it really walked you right through everything you ever wanted to know about YouTube and videos.

Similarly, I loved your last week and this video as well. These tips sure are wonderful for anyone wondergin how to start off with a new topic that do require well researched keywords.

While I do use the Google keyword tool, I really never gave much thought about Google alerts- do they work for your niche or emails also, or are they just for video?

Yes indeed, Google insights give a deeper understanding about what people are really looking out for on your blog, and must be the same for the videos that are mainly looked up.

Though I don’t have much of an idea about the YouTube links you shared or their blog, I’m sure there are a lot of hidden treasures in them that everyone’s just going to love.

These were indeed wonderful secrets you shared with all of us, and I love the ease with which you are able to narrate things- another lesson I take back with me for today- to be yourself :)

Thanks for sharing, and wishing you all the best for Barry’s video challenege. Am sure you are going to win, and even if you don’t- we got a lot to learn from all that you shared- so you ARE a winnder already in our eyes :)

Thank you Harleena, glad you enjoyed them even though I know you aren’t doing video.

The alerts can be set up so that you receive alerts on all information or you can receive just blogs, videos, news, discussions, books, etc. Whatever you want an alert on you just set it up. You can have it sent once a day, a week, a month, your choice.

Thank you Harleena, I appreciate all your kind words. I would LOVE to win Barry’s challenge but like you said, I already feel like a winner. Seriously, I get to meet some new people who have just joined his challenge because they wanted to step outside their box and start doing videos too. This gave them the tool and the accountability to do just that. So we are all supporting one another and helping each other along.

Have a wonderful weekend Harleena…

Adrienne,

Where do I start? Wow! I love the Google Alerts idea. I already get alerts for my keywords but to specify just videos is a great tip! And then to publish a video response. Wow! What a great tip.

As I make more videos, they get easier. So like you said on the beginning of your post, we need to get into doing more videos. I think people are scared of them and/or hate to hear themselves or see themselves. They can keep doing that and I will make videos, lol.

Thanks for the SEO video tips. I always forget to do SEO. It has been my crutch in blogging.

Hi Allie,

Ah, so happy to hear that you got some tips from this one. Yeah, I didn’t think about video alerts either actually. And I’m with you about not optimizing my posts with more SEO. I just get a thought in my head and I run with it. Oh sure, I’m getting lots of views on my posts but are the search engines finding me? That’s the may key right.

I agree with you, just start doing videos. Heck, I still hate the way I sound but you guys enjoy it so that’s really what matters right. The more you do, the more comfortable you become and you’ll look back one day and laugh at yourself for ever having been scared to start with. I sure have. lol…

You can definitely set the alerts up for your name as well as blog posts, etc. I think that most people just didn’t think to include videos among those as well. Especially if you plan on doing more.

Ahhhhh trusty Youtube videos. One of my favorite sites. Unfortunately, I was banned from their advertising. Go figure. You can’t use the name of any Network Marketing company in your title of an advertisement. I even called Google to confirm I was doing this correctly – 3 of them confirmed that I was. I started the campaign, and hours later was officially ‘banned’ from Google – for life. lol. Go figure. I still have videos and e-mail, that is IT. Every other feature, including analytic were stripped. FYI in-case anyone starts to advertising lol.

The trusty keyword tool. Love it. Keyword research before making any video for the best results/views :).

Thanks for sharing Adrienne!

Wow Brock, are you serious? I remember when I first started doing marketing we were taught to put titles of network marketing companies in our videos. I did a ton of those but when I stopped promoting the opportunity I was with that those videos related to I took them all down. I’m SO glad I did or my YouTube channel would have been terminated. A lot of the top marketer’s were due to this but I didn’t know you could be banned from advertising. I haven’t been approved to advertise on YouTube yet, I don’t have enough traffic as far as they’re concerned I guess. Doesn’t matter that my most popular video almost has 1 million views now. Hey, I’ll get there though.

So sorry to here that, man I’m bummed for you.

The trusty old keyword tool is definitely a must have for content and video marketing. Absolutely!

Thanks Brock and make it a great day!

Yeah – good think all of Youtube videos are still there – they don’t remove those, but just preventing me from advertising, and all of Google’s ‘extra’ features.

Even though they didn’t tell me the reason why I was banned, the only thing I can think of is that I placed a name of a company in the advertising. I currently have company names all over the place, which is fine, but it’s not fine if you advertise it. Go figure.

Just a warning in case you ever wanted to start :)

Hi Adrienne. Great tips here on The Secret Of Making Great YouTube Videos.

I feel that YouTube, like many other social platforms, are going to be (if not already are), key marketing and customer service factors for businesses.

Knowing how to make a YouTube video will not only benefit business people, but everyday people as well, who want to market their skills and talents.

I foresee an age where people will no longer have to physically go into interviews, but will simply be required to post a YouTube clip of themselves.

Ah, glad you enjoyed that series but beware, they don’t work as well as they use to which I stated in the description and on each blog post. With Google’s slap last year to the article directories, it’s hard to get a heck of a lot of content out there now without hiring someone to write original content. Now the second thing is just go to my free training site and the tab is at the top of my blog. Log in and go to the social media marketing area and then videos. I’ll show you what to do to get started and you don’t even have to have a camera to start out with. You just need to get started okay!

Hope that helps and enjoy your week!

Thank you Denise, it’s taken me awhile to get to this point I guess. I do try to make things easy for people so by walking you through the “how to” hopefully you’ll be able to do the exact same thing.

Thanks for your comment, it’s greatly appreciated.

I’ve put up loads of videos on my Youtube channel – I’m a realtor and have to upload video tours of the various properties on the market. There’s a learning curve, to be sure, but once you figure out the basics the rest will come easily enough. I would even go as far as saying that creating, editing and sharing videos on Youtube can be quite addictive, especially if you get feedback on your work.

Glad to hear you are using YouTube for your business Alex.

I took a video course and the owner had a student that was in real estate. She made the tours of her homes fun and mysterious and they really started getting a lot of views and attention. Some of her homes, which were high end by the way, were sold within one weeks time due to her creativity. That might be something to consider when shooting them for your viewers.

I love videos and you are right, they can become addictive.

Appreciate your comment Alex and thank you for stopping by.

Hi Adrienne

Well as promised I made it over and yes before the day’s end! ;)

As usual you have produced yet another awesome video packed with some great tips that we can all benefit from; we can’t ever get enough tips …right!

I am familiar with most of the tips you have shared Adrienne; but one in particular was new to me and that was “Google Alerts” even though I had used this before I have never actually used it for Videos. Doh! Another Homer moment ;) I will definitely be checking that one out Adrienne.

As I have said many a time Adrienne I love your blog, love your post’s and love your videos, and education each and every time. Already looking forward to my next lesson ;)

Take care; and have a wonderful weekend

Ian :)

Hi Ian,

You did better than me, I had something to do last night and this morning so I’m very late with replying to your comment. But I’m finally here! :-)

We do love to learn cool things don’t we?

I know what you mean, I was always searching for content with the alerts and never really thought about the videos. But then again, when I was introduced that I should be creating more videos then I can understand why I would want to see what other videos people are creating on that topic as well. Makes sense right!

I hope I can continue to share things with you Ian that you aren’t familiar with. Guess that’s what’s so great about continuing to learn new things right!

Thank you for dropping by and have fun barbecuing this weekend. I’ll be there with you in spirit and if you’re cooking ribs, I’ll be salivating over here in Texas. :-)

Hi Adrienne,
I knew just the two first tips. the rest was new to me so thank you very much for the advice.
I have ever used google insights either…
As you know I am working on the Greek Internet and my niche is in Greek language and I have a big problem: when I use the Google Keyword analysis tool to find good keywords, I cannot find a lot of keywords with more than 3.000 monthly research. If I find keywords with a lot of monthly researches then they are very competitive!!!
Do you have any suggestion about that (apart start working for another niche!)?
Do you believe that keywords with 2.000 monthly researches could do the job?
Thank you for this video.
Have a nice we :)

Hi Lenia,

If you go too far below the 3,000 monthly search results then that just means that not too many people are searching for those terms. So you aren’t going to get many visitors to your site. You need to keep searching until you locate those keywords that people are searching for that aren’t too competitive. That’s what you want, people to locate your content so I say keep on searching.

You can always try those with the 2,000 monthly searches and test to see if you get many visitors. If you don’t get many visitors then you know you have to keep on looking. That would be my suggestion.

Glad you enjoyed the video and learned a few more sites that can help with your keyword research.

Have a great weekend.

Hi Adrienne,

I just land here from Barry’s place. This is really cool ;) When it comes to creating videos, except for creating and uploading, it should be searchable and help users to find it easily. no? :)

Absolutely a research on keywords is really worthy to draw more traffic to websites too. That’s where we want users to find our videos more easily. However in addition to trending, we can guess what they will type according to our topic too. And as like Barry do, checking keywords of trending videos can help us get more idea about using keywords.

Nice video and you’re doing great with creating + editing videos Adrienne :)

Cheers…

Hey Mayura,

Glad you popped over here from Barry’s post. He had lots of good scoop to share on his post didn’t he? We’ve been going hand in hand with sharing information about getting those YouTube videos created.

Happy to hear that you appreciated both our poss. Always a pleasure to hear your opinion.

Trending is a great source and just another tip to help with keywords people are already searching for. I never can locate any in my particular niche though but that’s okay.

Appreciate your comment, thanks for stopping by! :-)

Again learned a lot of good stuff. Love the idea about the rising keywords in google insight. I already knew about Google hot trends, but never knew about youtube trends. That’s a content rich video. Really cool…

Adrienne,

This is such a great series of videos and even though they are not new, the message is still inspiring. I came back on to watch them, hoping to get the courage to make my own. Well, I’ve finally done it! It’s obvious that I need to watch more about editing. This is a whole new field for me.
Thank you for putting your time and effort into sharing what we all need to know to have success in every area of blogging. Your current work is always amazing, but these videos are still so important to helping myself and others accomplish our goals of video blogging well.

I just need more hours in my day to explore and practice all of this! Thank goodness it is always here when I have that question!
Thank you!

Hey Karen,

You went back in time now didn’t you. Some of those programs aren’t even available now, they’ve changed and I definitely hate that when I look back on my older stuff.

Video is more powerful then ever and as you know I just created my first one this year and it had been several months. I just enjoy doing tutorials more I’ve found and when there isn’t anything I need to teach or walk my readers through then I usually don’t shoot one. I use to do a lot of face to face videos and have been told I need to do a few more. We’ll see though but I’m glad you enjoyed this one and a lot of it is still relevant, you’re right.

I’m glad you’ve started shooting some videos Karen and I enjoyed watching yours yesterday. You’ll get more comfortable, trust me and people appreciate you showing them how to do stuff. I definitely learn better that way myself.

There will never be enough hours in the day I’m afraid. You’ll do great my friend.

Drop on by any old time and I’m here to help! ;-)
